If a woman has any kind of discharge from the genital organs, then you should not try to cure yourself, you need to seek help medical care. Self-medication in this case can lead to the fact that the acute process becomes chronic, which is much more difficult to treat.

Why might white flakes appear?

Such discharge (also called cheesy) is most often a sign of vaginal candidiasis or thrush, a disease caused by yeast-like fungi of the genus Candida. This disease is not always the result of infection; very often it is caused by one’s own fungi, which constantly live on the mucous membranes of the genital tract, with decreased immunity.

But the problem is that cheesy discharge can be more noticeable, hiding signs of some other sexually transmitted infection, so before starting treatment, you must undergo a laboratory examination.

It is quite possible that in addition to fungi of the genus Candida, other pathogens of bacterial origin will be found (for example, gonorrhea - it may well occur hidden), intracellular pathogens (chlamydia, ureaplasmosis, mycoplasmosis) or protozoa (trichomoniasis).

How else does thrush manifest in women?

Thrush most often begins with burning and itching in the genital area. It is impossible not to notice such a symptom, since it usually worries women very much. But each body reacts to a particular infection in its own way, so some women may not have itching and burning, or these symptoms will not be too pronounced.

In the genital area, redness and swelling of the mucous membrane first appear, and then grains of a cheesy coating appear on the reddened, edematous mucosa. At first, this plaque is easily removed, but gradually the plaque grows and turns into a film that sits tightly on the mucous membrane. If you try to remove such a film, you will notice that it is not easy and after removal, the surface of the mucous membrane will begin to bleed.

At the same time, discharge may appear, initially colorless, and then yellowish (a sign of a bacterial infection), which contains white cheesy flakes. The discharge can be abundant and, on the contrary, scanty.

If such a condition is not treated in time, then after some time its manifestations will decrease and become less pronounced (erased). This is a sign that the process has become protracted. The course can be characterized by frequent exacerbations of the disease, when severe itching, burning in the genital area and copious cheesy discharge reappear.

In this case, can the woman’s sexual partner become infected? It all depends on his immunity. At good immunity a man may not become infected, but if his immunity is reduced, he will also show signs of candidiasis.

How to clarify the diagnosis of the disease

Laboratory tests will help. In scrapings taken from the walls of the vagina, with candidiasis under a microscope, clusters can be seen large quantity fungi of the genus Candida and long filaments of its pseudomycelium. The secretions are also cultured on nutrient media in order to identify the causative agent of the infection (there may be more than one) and its sensitivity to various antifungal and antibacterial drugs.

White flakes in the vagina indicate vaginal candidiasis or vaginitis, which is one of the most common bacterial infections in women.

Causes

Vaginitis is accompanied by swelling of the vagina. Usually the presence of the harmful elements that cause it does not pose a health threat because they are controlled by other beneficial microorganisms. They are typically contained by the body's immune system, the body's natural bacterial flora, and the homeostatic control of maintaining the body's pH levels within normal ranges.

A disruption in their normal development can occur under the influence over a long period of one of the following factors or a combination of them:

  • allergies to hygiene detergents;
  • allergies to poor quality underwear;
  • inflammatory diseases of the pelvic organs;
  • surgical removal of the ovaries;
  • allergies to tampons and pads;
  • cancer;
  • menopause;
  • excessive secretion of sweat glands;
  • foreign objects in the vagina;
  • inflammation of the cervix.

Antibiotics and other medications that reduce immunity aggravate the development of thrush.

Most common manifestations

Signs or symptoms of vaginal candidiasis may vary from woman to woman. The most common concerns:

  • itching in the vagina (it is worth considering that there can be many reasons);
  • irritation;
  • skin redness;
  • painful urination;
  • white flakes in the vagina.

The latter may be yellowish in color, with a texture close to cottage cheese, and have no particular odor. Sexual intercourse can be painful, as can entering the vagina, since in a diseased state it will be dry and inflamed.

With complications and in advanced cases, the infection can spread to the inner thighs, labia and even the anus.

Factors leading to itching

Excessive washing, especially with soap, can make the itching worse. Using soap actually washes away vaginal secretions and the layer of beneficial bacteria that is needed. This leads to dryness and itching. Removal of the necessary protective bacteria predisposes to the growth of fungal infections. Also, the skin may react poorly even to the rare use of soap, which, for individual reasons, is not suitable for a particular woman.

A rash from irritation after shaving in the pubic area can also cause localized itching. The most comfortable thing for your skin will be not shaving. If you still need to resort to it, you should definitely use creams and lotions after it, preferably purchased at a pharmacy, with a wound-healing, disinfectant effect.

Often some itching is noticed after menstruation. Blood and other discharge can irritate the vagina and cause itching. In addition, there is the influence of a hormonal factor. Levels of female hormones decrease immediately after menstruation, which leads to a decrease in secretions and discharge, which means dryness and itching will occur.

Itching in the vagina before or during menstruation also occurs due to a decrease in lubricant secretions due to low hormones.

Itching can also be a sign of an allergy to the condom material that is being used. Then you need to try to change the choice of contraception used.

Itching sometimes expresses an allergy to seminal secretion, if itching or redness occurs and bothers you every time after sex.

Reason allergic reaction Components contained in washing powder or soap that is used to wash underwear can also serve as an example. By experimenting with washing with different means, it will be possible to determine which washing powder or soap does not produce individual harmful effects on the skin of the genital organs.

Periods of greatest susceptibility to disease

During pregnancy, the vagina is slightly dilated and its pH changes, which also makes it more vulnerable to infections.

The risk of vaginal candidiasis (thrush) increases with long-term use of strong antibiotics. They kill bacteria that can change the balance of microorganisms in the vagina. This can lead to an unwanted harmful proliferation of yeast elements. There is also the risk that it will lead to yeast infections or thrush in the mouth and gastrointestinal tract.

People with diabetes are also more likely to develop vaginal thrush because increased sugar levels in the body provide food for the yeast and stimulate its overgrowth.

The body is also susceptible to the development of these infections during periods when a woman is undergoing chemotherapy, taking cortisone or prednisone as a basis for any treatment, or if she is taking oral contraceptives.

Dryness can also be hormonal in nature. This is due to a decrease in estrogen levels, which is distinctive feature phases (menopause and later).

Stress in adolescence may be due to the countless changes that occur during this phase. This also leads to physical symptoms such as changes in appetite, vaginal dryness and itching, pimples, etc.

A serious attitude towards health will never ignore the issue of discharge with white flakes in women.

Regularly before and after menstruation, a healthy woman experiences clear or slightly cloudy vaginal discharge. She doesn't give them any attention special attention, because, being the norm, they do not create discomfort, do not have an unpleasant odor, and do not cause itching and burning in the perineum. Thanks to the discharge, the vagina is cleansed of dead epithelial cells, remnants of menstrual blood, and mucus. Sticky white discharge during ovulation is also normal.

But suddenly, instead of the usual ones, white vaginal discharge appears, reminiscent of kefir. The woman immediately tries to get to the bottom of the reason for their appearance.

Causes of white discharge in women

1.Candidal vaginitis(candidiasis), popularly called thrush, is one of the most common causes of white, curdled discharge. The abundance of discharge is not the only complaint of women, because when it appears, swelling and redness of the external genital organs, burning, itching, white coating on the clitoris, between the labia minora and majora. Leucorrhoea has a sour smell.

In addition, foamy white discharge after sexual intercourse, accompanied by pain, confirms the presence of thrush.

Many people know about its signs and, without delay, begin treatment on their own, while forgetting that their partner also needs to be treated, because the fungal pathogen is sexually transmitted, although candidiasis is not a sexually transmitted disease. His treatment must be approached with all seriousness.

If self-treatment does not give the desired result, you need to contact a gynecologist to clarify the nature of the cheesy discharge.

2. Uncontrolled use of antibiotics without antifungal drugs disrupts the microflora of the vagina, promoting the rapid proliferation of fungi, which becomes the cause of thrush.

3. Oral contraceptives, influencing the hormonal background of a woman, provoke the appearance of leucorrhoea. A gynecologist will help you choose a contraceptive or change it.

4.Pregnancy- These are colossal hormonal changes in the female body. The amount of progesterone increases, immunity decreases, which sharply increases the activity of fungi. An inflammatory process begins in the genitals, accompanied by cheesy discharge, itching and burning.

5. Mycoplasmosis, trichomoniasis, ureaplasmosis and other sexually transmitted diseases have symptoms similar to those of thrush. They can cause foamy and cheesy discharge with unpleasant smell spoiled fish or rotten hay. If there is even the slightest doubt about the safety of sexual intercourse, you should immediately contact a specialist. Identifying these diseases in the early stages makes it possible to get rid of dangerous bacteria. An advanced version of the disease can lead to infertility.

6. Endocrine diseases(diabetes mellitus, pathology of the thyroid gland) are also the cause of the appearance of discharge characteristic of candidiasis.

Having dealt with some of the causes of discharge with white flakes in women, I would like to emphasize that a gynecologist must diagnose the disease in order to begin qualified treatment in a timely manner.

Probably every woman sooner or later faces a problem when intimate place not everything is fine. Discharge begins different strengths and consistency. Knowing exactly what kind of discharge can appear in certain diseases is very important, because just such manifestations can tell a woman whether everything is okay with her health.

Characteristics of different secretions

As such, vaginal discharge is normal for any healthy woman. But changes in their color, smell and consistency may indicate the presence of various kinds of problems or simply changes in the body itself.

For example, when hormonal status changes, the intensity of discharge may change. This often happens during pregnancy and shortly before the start of menstruation. But a decrease in the intensity of discharge is a harbinger of menopause.

If the mucus of the discharge increases, this may indicate problems in the cervix. And if there is a sour smell and white lumps, most likely the body has been affected by a fungal infection. Symptoms of a bacterial infection will include greenish or yellowish discharge.

Discharge during pregnancy

Discharge white often appear in the form of lumps. As practice shows, 95 percent of pregnant women suffer from heavy discharge. Although the discharge may sometimes be thin and sparse, it is often thick, white, and copious. And if lumps appear, there is a possibility that the disease has some advanced form.

That is why many pregnant women are forced to undergo treatment in order not to harm their child during childbirth, since, passing through the birth canal, the child can become infected. Therefore it is impossible with this important event, as pregnancy, ignore the doctor's advice regarding treatment.

Discharge from thrush

Discharge can also be a signal that a woman is experiencing gynecological diseases, which can lead to and even disability.

White discharge in lumps can be caused by the disease candidiasis (). This is an infectious, fungal disease that manifests itself on both the external and internal surfaces of the vagina. It can spread over fairly large areas. With this disease, the discharge may have different kind. Usually these are white discharge in lumps (cheesy), itching in the genital area, microcracks in the vaginal mucosa, an unpleasant sour odor, pain when urinating.

The cause of the disease may be:

  • hormonal disorders;
  • antibiotics taken by the woman;
  • vaginal douching;
  • contraceptives;
  • infection from a sexual partner;
  • violation of diet, unhealthy diet;
  • excess weight;

Those more likely to develop thrush are also those who, due to certain circumstances, have a constantly reduced immune system, for example, those who are sick diabetes mellitus or an HIV-infected person.

The difference between normal discharge and thrush

If the lumps have big sizes, flakes and plates are observed in the discharge, a white coating has appeared on the labia, and there is also itching and irritation, then most likely it is thrush.

Moreover, if we talk about different phases menstrual cycle, then with normal discharge they will differ depending on the period. But the discharge characteristic of thrush will always be the same.

Treatment for white discharge in lumps

If symptoms are detected, you should consult a doctor and get tested. Only after this the doctor prescribes treatment. This is often medications in the form of suppositories that need to be placed in the vagina for 5-10 days. This period is usually enough to eliminate the problem in both pregnant and non-pregnant women.

Antifungal drugs are used to treat thrush, which can neutralize and destroy the disease. It is most effective when both sexual partners undergo treatment, this helps to avoid re-infection. There are quite a lot of methods for treating candidiasis: in addition to vaginal suppositories, these can be ointments, etc.

Any woman should always be attentive to all processes occurring in her body. It is important to closely monitor any changes, especially if it concerns suspicious discharge, and if there is the slightest problem, seek qualified help.
