Phuket or Pattaya which is better? This is roughly the question asked by tourists choosing a tour to Thailand. Similar questions are asked by those tourists who have already been to one of the resorts in Thailand and are choosing where to go this season.

The main differences in these resorts are their location and origin. So it turned out that nature turned out to have Phuket as an island, and Pattaya as part of the mainland. Paved to the island of Phuket highway, this makes it much easier when moving around the country on your own. Many products are brought to Phuket from mainland Thailand.

Let's consider the most important aspects of a holiday in Thailand for a tourist. Everyone goes to Thailand for clear sea, beautiful beaches and exoticism, but is it really so, and where are things better with exotic vacations?

The short conclusion is: a holiday in Pattaya is suitable for young party-goers who love active recreation and adventure; holidays in Phuket are chosen by married couples with children, for whom comfort is more important than entertainment (although there is plenty of entertainment here). About holidays in Phuket with children, read the link.

Climate, weather and seasons

The climate in Pattaya is much more pleasant in any season. In the dry season (from November to April) the probability of precipitation is minimal (it can rain 2-3 times a month, no longer than half an hour), the rest of the time the bright sun shines; in Phuket it can rain every week. During the rainy season (from May to October) it will rain in Pattaya no more than once a week, for a short duration, while in Phuket the rains will be more frequent and longer.

The climate is better in Pattaya.

Sea

A tourist flew from Moscow to Pattaya, waiting snow-white beaches, clear water and complete relaxation, but it turns out that the flight was in vain. And indeed, the state of the sea in the city is so-so, the most ordinary yellow sand on a narrow sandy beach and the water is cloudy.

Many tourists go to Koh Larn for swimming. It is located an hour's drive from Pattaya. You can get to Koh Larn by a regular ferry, which runs on schedule. Some tourists (me too) swim and sunbathe on the beaches in Pattaya, because the road to the nearest island of Koh Larn takes two hours (an hour there and an hour back), and besides, on the island you need to use something to get around (I rent a moped), Thus, trips to the island are expensive, both in terms of money and time.

The sea around the island of Phuket is much cleaner and more pleasant than the sea in the city limits of Pattaya, and the sea here is different, in Pattaya it is the Gulf of Thailand, and the island of Phuket is washed by the Andaman Sea. The transparency of the water in Phuket is surprising, the water is warm, and the bottom topography is flat, which is especially important for tourists traveling with children.

The sea is better in Phuket.

Beaches and beach holidays

You can compare the noisiest and most crowded beach in Phuket - Patong, and even it looks much better than the city beaches in Pattaya. Many tourists speak extremely negatively about Patong, but it is so huge that you can even find your ideal place there. As a rule, the most crowded place in Patong is near the exit from Bangla Road, but move a little to the side and you will be happy.

Some of the beaches in Phuket are private and belong to hotels (both large and small), so if you want to sunbathe in splendid isolation, you can choose one of these beaches. The choice and variety of beaches on the island is amazing; there are both tourist ones with an abundance of vacationers, and completely deserted ones, both absolutely free, and those that charge an entrance fee.

The beaches are better in Phuket.

Attractions

It’s hard to say that there are fewer attractions in Phuket than in Pattaya; most likely they are a little different and are suitable for those tourists who love the natural beauty of Thailand.

But nevertheless, the number of excursions and attractions in Pattaya is off the charts and simply defies any analysis. There is everything here, from an amazing garden of million-year-old stones to trips to neighboring Cambodia, and if this is not enough, then the capital of Thailand, Bangkok, is only two hours away by bus.

For lovers of pristine natural beauty, you should definitely visit the world famous Similan Nature Reserve, which can be reached from Phuket, and if you are vacationing in Pattaya, be sure to go to the River Kwai.

There are more attractions in Pattaya.

Entertainment

There is many times more entertainment in Pattaya than in Phuket; the famous Pattaya Walking Street is rippling with advertisements for entertainment establishments. Walking Street is full of restaurants, nightclubs, discos, bars with girls (not all of them are girls, be careful), Go-Go bars, exotic shows (transvestite shows, X-shows, 69, etc.) .

In Phuket there is also an analogue of Walking Street called Bangla Road, the scope is not the same as in Pattaya, but lovers of hot drinks will find what they are looking for. In Phuket, you should choose the right place to stay, because all entertainment is concentrated in the Patong area. While the sun sets on Patong and evening life begins, the rest of the island goes into “sleep” mode.

Entertainment is better in Pattaya

Housing prices

Phuket is considered the most expensive resort in Thailand, but despite this status you can find housing there for 300 baht per day (details about the baht to ruble exchange rate), but do not be fooled by the low price, it is likely that a little later some feature of such cheapness will be revealed .

Housing prices in Phuket

In general, prices for accommodation are approximately the same, although there are a number of features. If there is any in Pattaya a good choice apartments (apartments), then in Phuket there is a huge selection of villas and small private houses for one family, but otherwise much is very similar. Taking into account the fact that a villa in Phuket can be rented for several families and save a lot, Phuket is more profitable.

Housing prices in Pattaya

In a word, if you are traveling with your family for a relaxing holiday, then it is more profitable to go to Phuket.

Housing prices are better in Phuket (price/quality).

Prices for food and groceries

As for food prices, Phuket with imported fruits and vegetables is ready to surprise you with practical Moscow prices for fruits, and some restaurants may not be visited by all Russian tourists. This is especially noticeable in the Patong area. Sometimes it gets ridiculous, you choose what you want to buy, go towards Kata Beach and everything is the same there, but much cheaper. There are also very authentic roadside cafes with Thai prices.

The height of surprise for me (in the 2015 season) was the price of my favorite fruit - durian. Durian in Patong is sold already peeled for 1000 baht per kilogram ( approximately 28 dollars), while in neighboring Vietnam I bought the same durian for no more than 40,000 dong per kilogram ( about 2 dollars).

In Pattaya, food prices are more similar to Bangkok and bargaining is possible, as every Asian market requires. However, prices for everything else: restaurants, bars, massage, food, manufactured goods, entertainment, travel, motorbike rental, etc. in Pattaya are significantly lower than in Phuket and this is a fact.

However, you can go north from Patong, where you can also find more reasonable prices and more accommodating Thais, but for this you need to rent a bike.

All those who like to drink, eat and have fun are recommended to go on holiday to Pattaya, where everything is cheaper and much more interesting.

Where is it easier to get from Bangkok to Pattaya or Phuket?

If you are an independent traveler and arrived in Bangkok, then getting to the beaches of Pattaya will be much easier for you and, no less important, much cheaper.

Air travel from Russia to Pattaya is cheaper.

Summarize: Pattaya is suitable for noisy, fun companies, which are not averse to fitting into any adventure (sometimes very dubious), here you can also have a good time on excursions and other tourist attractions. Phuket is more suitable for a relaxing family vacation with children; holidays on the island are also often chosen by newlyweds to spend honeymoon.

Have a nice holiday in Thailand.

Which is better - Pattaya or Phuket? This question is most often asked by tourists who fly to Thailand for the first time. And although there are no comrades according to taste, there are several objective factors that can be compared and thereby ease the pain of choice for beginners. So…

Where is the best place to relax?

One of the most important conditions is, of course, the sea. According to this parameter, the clear leader is Phuket. There is more greenery here, the coastal strip is wider, the sea is much cleaner, and the descent into it is gentler, which is an additional advantage if you come on vacation with small children.

In Pattaya, it’s more pleasant to just sunbathe on the beach, and it’s better to go into the sea to swim on a boat or boat. If you want to swim, it is advisable to go to nearby islands, for example, . The journey will take you 45 minutes and you will pay about 30 baht one way per passenger ( ). There are much more beaches in Phuket; you can choose secluded places. In Pattaya, everywhere is crowded.

Another important factor when deciding the question of Pattaya or Phuket: where is the best place to relax is the climate. Here Pattaya takes the lead. From November to April – during the dry season – It is raining maximum twice a month, and even then, no more than half an hour. During the rainy season, precipitation occurs on average twice a week, although the sky is often overcast. In Phuket in the low season there are often big waves and dangerous underwater currents, so watch out for warning flags.

In terms of ecology, Phuket is better. Almost half of the resort here is occupied by forests, which improves air quality. There aren't even parks in Pattaya.

Pattaya or Phuket: which is better?

As for reviews on such parameters as attractions and prices, then it is better to choose Pattaya. Phuket is considered one of the most expensive resorts, and you will pay much more for accommodation here. There are also budget hotels, but you can rarely find them on the Internet, and you will have to walk a long way to the sea. There are practically no attractions in Phuket - just a few old temples and waterfalls. You will have to travel 12-14 hours or so to Bangkok and Ayutthaya.

When comparing entertainment, reviews are divided. Both resorts have plenty to do, but Pattaya has lower prices and no snorkeling.

Pattaya or Phuket - which is better? If you have this question, most likely you are traveling to Thailand for the first time. Which resort should you prefer? We will analyze in detail all the pros and cons of Pattaya and Phuket so that you can make the right choice.

Pattaya or Phuket?

Deciding which is better, Pattaya or Phuket, is actually very easy. Just answer a number of questions for yourself that will be asked in this article and by the end of this review your opinion will be clear. We are all different, we have different goals and priorities for our vacation, so both resorts have their fans quite rightly.

Which city should you prefer? Vacation on an island or the Gulf of Thailand? Where is it cheaper - Phuket or Pattaya? Where better beaches? how much does a trip to Phuket cost, and how much to Pattaya?
There are many similar questions, the answers to which you will find below. Let's compare the climate, weather, beaches, prices in Phuket and Pattaya, the cost of rental housing, transport, excursions and other important components of any vacation to make it easier to choose.

Where to go to Phuket or Pattaya?

Let me start by saying that I have lived in Pattaya for many years. For permanent residence, Pattaya is without question much better than Phuket. At the same time, Phuket is a wonderful seaside resort where you can come for a week or two to relax and leave warm memories. The main thing is to understand what to expect from this vacation, otherwise surprises will await unprepared tourists at both resorts.

Weather and climate in Pattaya and Phuket

Pattaya the sunniest city in Thailand. The sun shines here 330 days a year, and the average annual temperature is 28 degrees. Excursions available all year round(All).
Pattaya has consistently smooth, identical weather all year round, with the exception of a short period of rain, which, however, even during the rainy season does not interfere with rest, since it occurs at night and for a short time.
In Pattaya all year round it is +30 +35, in winter the temperature drops to +25 in the morning.

There is no distinct rainy season in Pattaya; you can go on holiday here in any month. The main precipitation falls in late October - early November.

Phuket– a completely seasonal resort. From the end of March to November is the low season when it rains, red flags are put up on the beaches and you cannot swim. Even most of the excursions for these 7 months go on break and are mothballed. So you can relax comfortably in Phuket only from November to March.

The weather in Phuket can bring a lot of surprises to vacationers. Firstly, Phuket has a pronounced seasonality, just like the other islands of Thailand.
If it waits in Phuket, then it can pour like buckets for several weeks in a row.

The most favorable months for a holiday in Phuket are from December to March; in other months, the weather is unpredictable, you can come on vacation and spend the whole time in your room because of the rain.

Round weather and climate remains with Pattaya.

Natural disasters – Tsunamis, earthquakes, landslides

Recently, an earthquake occurred in Sumatra, Indonesia, and there were injuries and deaths. It would seem, what does Phuket have to do with it?
Despite the fact that everything is nearby, in Phuket there were tremors of magnitude 3, not strong, but unpleasant.
Remembering the 2004 tsunami in Phuket, like it or not, you’ll wonder how safe it is to go there. I have a family friend who died there during the tsunami.

Yes, in Phuket after the terrible tsunami of 2004, they provided safety measures, installed signal buoys in the sea, lights and equipped evacuation areas. And I must say that they have already come in handy more than once. The question is different. Do you need it while on vacation?

Pattaya - mainland. And we can end here. It never shakes here. There can be no tsunami or other natural disasters here. Even during the flooding of Bangkok in 2011, only pitiful echoes reached Pattaya and for a couple of days people walked ankle-deep in water.
It's very unpleasant to read the nonsense that is written Russian media, when they confuse Pattaya with Phuket and then they call and write to me to find out how we are here. Alive or not? Guys, it rarely even rains here, and there’s no talk of flooding, hurricanes, etc. It's always calm in Pattaya.

This point is also outside Pattaya.

Comparison of the sea and beaches of Pattaya and Phuket

You don’t need to be an expert here to say that the beaches and sea in Phuket are many times better than those in the city of Pattaya.

If you are traveling only across the sea to Pattaya, this is a mistake. The sea in Pattaya is mediocre, the city beaches have yellow sand, and the water is often cloudy. Not always, of course, and not everywhere, but the azure sea with white sand in Pattaya can only be found on nearby islands like Koh Larn and on military beaches in the suburbs.

During the high season in Pattaya, even within the city limits the sea is very clean and transparent, the beaches are clean. Because the weather (no storms, cool), and also because work is constantly being done to improve it.
They brought tons of new sand to Jomtien and Beach Road, which is poured into the sea, onto the beach, new palm trees are planted, the coastline is expanded, in general, they are trying to at least not worsen what is there.

There are more beaches in Phuket, the choice is wider, you can come and swim at any beach in Phuket.
During the season there are, of course, crowds of people on the beaches of Phuket, but due to the length of the coastline, everyone will find a secluded place. The most popular beach in Phuket is Patong, which is certainly not for introverts. Those who need peace and quiet should stay in less crowded areas, away from the center.

If you have transport in Phuket, then you will have access to such good beaches as Freedom, Paradise, Tri Trang Beach, if not, you can relax and swim in Patong.
Don't go sunbathing right next to Bangla Road, walk a few minutes to the side and get a free beach with clean water, in the shade of palm trees and without intrusive traders who try to sell something every five seconds.

The sea in Phuket is clean, there is almost no garbage in the sea, after all, this is an island that is washed from all sides, and even if there is garbage from ships and boats, everything floats safely back to the sea. But it happens that algae begin to bloom in the sea, which can spoil the joy of swimming.

Both in Pattaya and Phuket, it makes sense to stay in a hotel with its own beach, so as not to waste precious time on trips to it.
But, if you want a really good beach, then you should choose from hotels in the North of Pattaya( Centara , Cape Dara) or in the south outside the city – Ambassador, Movenpick, Ravindra , Dor Shada.
This is all the first line and the beaches will be swimmable. If you want “bounty” beaches, again the south is better. From here it takes 15-25 minutes to get to the military beaches.

Also, for lovers of quiet relaxation and solitude flying to Pattaya, I would advise, if not for the entire vacation, then at least for a few days to stay on the island of Samet, on nice beach.
For us, the ideal beach holiday is there.

How to get from the airport to Pattaya and Phuket

From Phuket airport it is cheaper and more convenient to order a transfer to the hotel you need through a Kiwi taxi, which will meet you with a sign and take you to the place for a fixed fee, than to catch local buses or try to bargain with bombers who overprice their services by at least twice.

The bus from the airport to Patong runs every two hours; if you arrive in the evening, this option is no longer available, since the last one leaves at 17:00.
Early in the morning or during the day, you can try to take a bus to Phuket town for 100 baht, and then transfer by tuk-tuk. This method is not very suitable for beginners, since you may not wait for what you need, confuse the stops, get lost and stretch out the pleasure after the flight for many hours.

Getting from Bangkok Airport to Pattaya is much easier. The distance from Bangkok airport to Pattaya is 120-150 km, (depending on the area where you are going), you can get to the bus station in Pattaya for 120 baht.

The disadvantage of this method is that upon arrival, especially during the season, it turns out that all tickets for the next flights are sold out and you will have to wait several hours for the next bus.
This option is not suitable for families with children, those who have had a difficult flight with transfers and the elderly.

I don’t recommend ordering a taxi at the airport, it’s expensive, they deceive you. The most profitable option Kiwi taxi. This is how we get from Pattaya to Bangkok airport and back.
A simple order and payment form, you don’t need to pay anything in advance, they often offer discounts, wait, and greet you with a sign.

Here is a review about Kiwi Taxi from our reader:

"Good morning! We arrived yesterday. The Kiwi taxi driver was waiting for us with a sign at the exit, which was written to us in advance on the confirmation receipt. The car is comfortable. We got to our destination perfectly)) the driver asked us to take a photo for a review, we didn’t mind)) Katerina, thank you for your work in collecting and writing useful information!)”

Phuket or Pattaya – prices for tours from Russia

And then Phuket loses to Pattaya. In most cases, the price of a trip to Phuket is more expensive than a similar one to Pattaya.

Where is it better to relax in Thailand, in Phuket or in Pattaya? This question is asked by everyone who chooses an Asian country for the first time and gets lost looking at the selection of tourist offers from tour operators who send northern residents on vacation to the south.

Phuket or Pattaya, where it is better for a tourist to relax in winter alone or with his family, offers a choice of dozens of hotels, excursions and beaches that are equally tempting. Phuket is an entire peninsula located remotely from the capital of Thailand, Bangkok. Pattaya is a city located near the center of the country.

Entertainment in both places is almost the same, so it’s worth comparing weather conditions, food prices, transport and hotels, safety and other aspects that a person cannot always control. Let's look step by step at what makes each of these resorts attractive.

Weather

Comparing Pattaya and Phuket weather conditions, then the resorts are not much different in this. In both places it is summer all year round, in January and July +30°C during the day. Only in winter the temperature at night drops to at least +23-24°C, and in July the temperature does not drop below +27°C. Phuket is a rainier island. Precipitation there begins in late March - early April and until November.

It can rain for half a month or more. The rainiest months in Phuket are September-October, during which time there is only 10 days a month without precipitation.

Pattaya is a less rainy city. Heavy precipitation begins a month later, in May, and lasts until winter. The wettest days occur in September-October, during which time it rains for half a month. The tourist season in Pattaya is considered to be from November to February, precisely because this period is the driest in the city. In Phuket, the tourist season begins in December and lasts until April.

Convenience of transfer

Phuket or Pattaya, where it is better to relax, choosing a southern country in winter, have well-established travel routes. A tourist can take a taxi and get to any point in the city, take public transport and follow a set route, or rent a car.

A taxi is the most expensive transport; the price per trip ranges from 895 to 1950 baht, or 1900-6500 rubles. depending on distance. For example, from the airport in Phuket to Bang Tao beach, it is 20 km, the trip will cost almost 1900 rubles. with kopecks. To the Phuket Tao bus station, the price in a taxi is approximately 2100 rubles, it is 30 km.

In Pattaya, taxi prices are higher because it is closer to the capital, to the center of Thailand. The cost of a taxi here starts from 2500 rubles. To get from Bangkok to Pattaya, you need to pay 3,500 rubles. To the nearest U-Tapao airport, the cost of a taxi trip will be 2477 rubles. As an alternative to a taxi, you can travel by tuk-tuk - a three-wheeled vehicle for 2 passengers.

The price for a trip to any distance will be 10 baht in Pattaya and 30 baht in Phuket. If you want to drive a car, you must have an international driving license and a credit card. Visa and Mastercard are accepted in Thailand. You can choose a good foreign car, Toyota, Honda or local model.

The price depends on the class of the car, ranging from 650 to 2000 baht; in Pattaya, car rental prices start from 800 baht. You can use the services of a personal driver for 500 baht per hour. You can rent a motorcycle for 150 baht per day.

There is also sea transport. City ferry for 30 baht or boat. Prices for a boat trip start from 3,000 baht, no matter how many people are traveling. Ferries travel rarely, once every 1 or 2 hours. The schedule must be confirmed with the control room. Its speed is low. For example, from Pattaya to Tawaen Beach in Koh Lan, the journey will take 45 minutes, the distance is only 12 km by water.

Hotels and cost of living in them

Phuket or Pattaya, where it is better to relax, having chosen a comfortable place of residence, will offer the Russian tourist a huge selection of hotels and cottages. You can choose a 10-storey building and relax in the city center with a sea view from a penthouse, or stay in a small house in nature in an ethnic style.

The pricing policy depends on the star level of the establishment and the presence of a massage room, swimming pool, restaurant and other additions. You can relax modestly, for 500 rubles/night, or you can have a luxurious holiday, for 11,000 rubles/night.

Sea and beach holidays

Due to the huge crowds of people during certain months of the year, the sea water on the coastline is not clean. To find relatively clean water, you need to go to Thailand in the summer or to islands with beaches, such as Lan, near Pattaya or Koh Lon, near Phuket. Ferries and boats go there every day, so there will be no difficulties with travel.

The infrastructure on the beaches within the city is excellent, there are restaurants, hotels, and toilets. You can rent an umbrella and sunbed. Only prices for food and essentials on the beaches are higher than in cities. There are several beaches along the coastline of Pattaya city different levels cleanliness.

Wongmat, for example, has the cleanest beach, the sand and water are cleaned from time to time, since the windows of many expensive hotels surrounding the area overlook the coastline. The shops of many beaches are not close, only on Jomtien Beach the infrastructure is located very close, including cafes and restaurants.

There are many more beaches in Phuket. There are 10 beaches open along the coast on the eastern and western sides of the island and all of them are free. The closest beach to the airport is Nai Yang, only 2 km away, the most distant is Yanui - 51 km, which is considered wild, with the fewest vacationers there.

For lovers of active recreation, it is better to choose the beaches of Patong, Karon and Bang Tao. These places are filled with attractions, spas and shops, but they also have the highest prices.

Entertainment and active recreation

Phuket, where most of the entertainment is related to the sea, or Pattaya, where it is better to relax with a large group, has a large selection of offers for tourists. In addition to numerous excursions in Phuket, a tourist can choose an activity at his discretion. Fans of sea excursions can see seascapes by purchasing 2 dives near the island of Racha.

It costs 3990 baht, including a Russian-speaking instructor.

Fishermen can order sea or lake fishing for 1390-2450 baht and go rafting along the river on an inflatable boat for 890-1290 baht. Lovers of various spectacles should see the local zoo in Phuket, price for 1 adult 1190 baht. Tourists will be offered to ride elephants, see monkey shows and buy a baby elephant at a local safari. The cost of a 30-minute ride is 500 baht.

The city has many attractions, ATV rides, and a visit to the water park. A tourist can look at the fearless Thais putting their heads in the mouth of a crocodile in a crocodile show and go to the dolphinarium, Thai boxing and order Thai massage. In Pattaya they show spectacular shows “Simon Cabaret”, “Siam Niramit”, “Aphrodite” and shows for adults “XXX”.

Prices for performances are 590-690 baht per person. A tourist can also explore the city himself, visit the largest Buddha statues, which are both in Phuket and Pattaya. You can order a boat and look at the islands or go on a yacht on a week-long romantic trip. Yacht rental starts from 12,000 baht per day.

Excursions

When planning to go on an excursion in Thailand, it is better to choose Pttaya for this. In Phuket, you will still have to travel to other cities and parts of Thailand to see the sights. All excursions there involve visiting islands such as the 12 Islands, James Bond, Maithon, Racha, Coral, Similan Islands, Phi Phi and Bambu.

Local excursions are cheaper than booking the same route through an agency. Excursions to the islands can be one-day, returning to the continent in the evening, or two-day with an overnight stay on the island and breakfast included in the price. Active excursions featuring local events, water parks, tastings and performances are available closer to the center.

In Pattaya, the following events are offered for 2019:

  • visit to the spice garden with tasting – 4 hours, $11/person;
  • excursion to Khao Kheo Zoo – 6 hours, $16/person;
  • travel to religious and cultural places of the city - 6.5 hours, $34/person;
  • sightseeing tour for the whole family - 9 hours, $38/person;
  • diving – 6 hours, $87/person;
  • rides at Siam Park in Bangkok, $26/person;
  • Thai boxing visit, $31/person;
  • visiting the islands of Samet, Koh Pai, Princess, Koh Sichang, Emerald Island $24-64/person.

Phuket or Pattaya. Where is the best place to relax in Thailand? Comparing resorts will help you decide.

This is only a small list of existing excursions; there are many more of them in Pattaya. You can explore the city with a group or order an individual guide who will take you to local shops and fairs and tell you how public transport works and where to eat. There are a lot of Russian-speaking guides in Thailand and travel agencies oriented towards Russian guests.

Public transport

Phuket or Pattaya, where it is better to relax, moving around the city with a minimum of money costs, offer to use public transport. In Thai cities it is aimed at local residents. That is, it will not travel along tourist routes and can easily lead a visitor to a remote place, so you need to clearly understand where you are going.

In Thailand, there are no trams, trolleybuses and metro familiar to Russian residents. All that can be caught as a bus is the local songthaew transport, it looks like an open-type peak-up with two benches for 15 people and a roof rack. You don’t need to make a lot of effort to stop him, the drivers themselves are looking for passengers, you just need to nod or make a slight gesture with your hand.

Payment is made upon arrival at the place, the money is given directly to the driver. To order a stop, you need to press the button located closer to the driver’s cabin. Transport runs until 11 pm, after which the usual “buses” turn into taxis, and the fare will be 10 times higher than the daily price.

Bus stops exist, but you can catch a songthaew on the go anywhere and also get off anywhere. There is also another public transport - moto taxi. These are ordinary motorcyclists, with a passenger sitting in the back and riding where they need to go. You can also use a three-wheeled moto transport, a tuk-tuk.

It can only accommodate 3 passengers, it is an alternative to a taxi, but it does not travel so fast. The cost of travel in tuk-tuks and songthaews in Phuket and Pattaya varies from 10 to 30 baht; this must be clarified immediately in order to prevent the driver from deceiving the tourist by doubling the price.

Long term rental housing

If you want to spend a long time in Thailand, it is better to rent long-term housing. This is much cheaper than daily rooms. The price depends on the type of housing, whether it is an apartment or a house, a townhouse or a condo, and how many rooms it has. The location of the place of residence is also important; in the center and near the beaches it will be more expensive, in places remote from the resorts it will be cheaper.

In Phuket, in remote places you can rent an apartment for 3,000 baht/month. The house will cost around 10,000 baht/month. Closer to the sea, prices for 2-bedroom houses will begin to rise, from 20,000 baht/month. and up to 65,000 baht, but it will already be a luxurious villa with a swimming pool. To rent housing, you must pay an additional deposit in the amount of the monthly cost of housing; this money is returned upon departure.

The amenities of a standard apartment do not include Internet, air conditioning, or even water and electricity. It is necessary to check their availability when looking for housing. In expensive places, of course, this is all included, but in cheap places, you need to set aside another 1-2 thousand baht per month for electricity and water.

In Pattaya, you can rent a room for 4,500 baht/month, a condo for 8,000 baht/month.

It’s easy to find them, you need to walk around the city and look at the advertisements on the streets, the price is set by the owner at his own discretion, the longer the tourist plans to stay, the lower the price of housing.

Townhouses and ramparts have their own fixed price lists, but the services there include room cleaning, gardener, room service, massage, swimming pool, etc.

Product prices

The pricing policy depends on the distance from the center. To the island of Phuket, it is necessary to spend more effort on delivery, so food prices will be 30% higher. There are shops and markets with food in Thailand. In the market you can always bargain for a lower price. You can eat anywhere in the city, in a street cafe, in a shopping center, on a ferry, at McDonald's or just at the market, trying everything you can.

Grocery stores always have a fixed price. It is better to take familiar foods to avoid stomach upset. It is better to shop at night markets; food prices are lower at this time and you can bargain.

Approximate prices for the most popular goods in Pattaya supermarkets:

  • bananas – 6 baht/piece;
  • dumplings – 40 baht/pack;
  • margarine – 45 baht;
  • chips – from 10 baht;
  • sushi – 25 baht;
  • water 0.5 l – 10 baht;
  • juice 1 l – 50-70 baht;
  • beer 0.3 – 40-100 baht.

Ready-made street food, packaged in plastic or served on a disposable plate, is popular in the city. In Pattaya, you can eat at McDonald's for 150 baht per person; in Phuket, the same lunch will cost 173 baht.

Prices for ready meals in Pattaya:

  • rice with chicken – 50-60 baht;
  • burger – 27-29 baht;
  • chicken kebab– 20 baht;
  • Fried fish large sizes– 100 baht;
  • banana pancakes – 40 baht.

In Phuket, prices for popular products are as follows:

  • beer 0.3 – 63-115 baht;
  • water 0.5 – 16 baht;
  • Coca-Cola – 28 baht;
  • chicken soup – 42 baht;
  • 1 kg of rice – 33 baht;
  • 0.5 kg of bread – 40 baht;
  • juice 0.7 l – 40 baht;
  • potatoes 1 kg – 48 baht;
  • Marlboro cigarettes – 95 baht.

Tsunami threat

Thailand ranks first in terms of threats from the sea. In 2004, a tsunami caused by an undersea earthquake claimed 300,000 lives, 8,500 of whom were Thai residents and tourists. The city of Banda Aceh was completely destroyed.

The blame for this event lies with the Thai authorities, who ignored the first impacts of the earthquake, which were felt along the entire coast and did not take measures to evacuate residents. Since then, coastal cities in Thailand have installed signs everywhere indicating the direction of evacuation in case of an earthquake.

Since that year, not a single incident of a tsunami has been reported, but the likelihood of its occurrence has not disappeared anywhere. To protect yourself from a natural disaster, you must always be on alert and not wait for the authorities to take action. At the first shock, you need to pack your things and leave the coastal city or climb the most high mountain, which is only available.

The first shock is not dangerous, disaster occurs after 2-3 shocks; in 2004, 3 strikes occurred within 2 hours.

Another symptom of an approaching tsunami is a sandbank tens of meters from the shore. If you choose between Phuket and Pattaya in the context of the tsunami threat, then it is better to relax in Pattaya. The disaster severely affected the island of Phuket in 2004. The entire coast of the Adaman Sea is at risk of flooding, while the Gulf of Thailand is safer.

Safety

Thailand is a police state, so crime is kept to a minimum. The people in the country are very friendly and are always ready to stand up for their own, so a policeman would rather take the side of a Thai than a tourist in the event of a domestic conflict, without evidence of the former’s guilt.

In Thailand there is the death penalty and huge fines for offenses that in Russia are regarded as crimes of low and medium gravity.

To avoid getting into trouble with the law, it is better to know what you should not do in Thailand:

Cleanliness and comfort

The level of compliance with sanitary conditions directly depends on the financial condition of residents. If you relax in expensive places, on beaches overlooking hotels, you can count on high level cleanliness and comfort. Coastal waters are often cleaned, especially those visible from the windows of expensive hotels.

Throwing garbage on the ground, especially rubbish, is prohibited; this can provoke problems with representatives of the law and you can easily pay a huge fine.

In the rooms of even third-rate hotels, the administration provides bed linen, but you must do the cleaning yourself, or pay extra for cleaning. In townhouses and luxury hotels, room cleaning is included in the price. Thais don't use toilets in their bathrooms. toilet paper. They replace it with their hand, which they then simply wash under running water.

The toilet also does not always have a flush tank; for this purpose there is a ladle and a bucket of water. In places aimed at European tourists, of course, amenities are organized according to the requirements of Western guests. But if you have an urge in the middle of the city, then be prepared to have napkins with you.

Public toilets there are a lot of them in the city, they are all paid, the price is from 5 to 20 baht. You can also ask to go to a local hotel or gas station; the Thais are friendly people and will not refuse a tourist. To ask “Where is the toilet”, you need to go up to a Thai and say “Hong Nam”, and he will point in the direction.

Cost of tours to Phuket and Pattaya

At the beginning of the tourist season in Thailand, various agencies offer last-minute tours to different cities. Many of them inflate prices by up to 100% when the peak season begins. In December, a tourist will pay the maximum, 113,000 rubles, since the rainy season in Thailand subsides at the beginning of winter.

When choosing Pattaya or Phuket for a vacation, a tourist must understand what he wants. If you want to spend your holiday riding on high waves and sunbathing on a deserted beach, then it is better to choose an island. On the contrary, for a holiday with your family or in a large noisy company, a city with many parties and attractions is suitable.

Those who do not like very long flights choose Pattaya, since the city is located next to Bangkok and getting to the destination is easier and faster. Phuket is a cleaner resort, there is not so much smog in the air and the water on the beaches is cleaner, but the prices here are higher.

Where it is better to relax, in Phuket or Pattaya, a tourist must decide for himself, based on his financial capabilities and priorities. In any case, a holiday in Thailand will bring a lot of pleasure and positive emotions, no matter what route the traveler chooses.

Pattaya. The city has a narrow beach along which a highway stretches. The sea within the city is muddy. To swim in clear water, you need to go to the islands nearby. Most often, tourists choose the island of Koh Larn. It is located an hour's ferry ride from Pattaya. The cost of a one-way trip is 30 baht (≈ $1). The sea on Koh Lan is even cleaner than on Phuket, but prices on the island are high.

Excursions and attractions

For those who want to explore Thailand and have a large selection of excursions and attractions, it is better to buy a tour to Pattaya. The choice in Pattaya is much greater than in Phuket.

In Pattaya You can get closer to the history, culture, architecture and rich heritage of Thailand. Pattaya's proximity to the border allows you to quickly get to neighboring Cambodia, so it is popular among tourists for 2-3 days.

Pattaya is also closer to Bangkok than Phuket. Just 2 hours by bus and you can explore the sights of Bangkok.

Popular places: Million Year Stone Garden, Temple of Truth, Mini Siam Park, Floating Market, Tropical Garden, Golden Buddha Mountain, etc.

The presence of public transport in Pattaya makes many attractions more accessible than in Phuket, where public transport is poorly developed and taxis are expensive.

The choice of excursions is smaller than in Pattaya. Phuket mainly has natural attractions: picturesque neighboring islands, waterfalls, panoramic platforms, beaches, etc. Thanks to the clean and transparent sea, diving, snorkeling and etc. are popular on the island.

Popular attractions in Phuket: Monkey Mountain, Botanical Garden, Tiger Kingdom, islands near Phuket (including James Bond Island).

Among the cultural monuments: the Big Buddha statue, the old town of Phuket Town, 3-D museum, temple complexes, museums, etc.

Animal shows, shows for children and night shows for 18+ occupy a special place among the entertainment in Phuket.

Prices – where is it cheaper in Thailand?

Prices in Phuket are about 30-45% higher (some things can be even more expensive). Prices on the island are higher for everything: fruits, drinks, alcohol, local delicacies. Lunch in a cafe is about one and a half to two times more expensive. Due to poor public transport, getting from point A to point B in Phuket is expensive.

The difference in prices also applies to souvenirs, clothing, and shoes. So, if you want to do some good shopping, then it’s better to go on vacation to Pattaya.

It is better to go on holiday to Phuket from December to March. At this time, the weather on the island is sunny and without rain. The sea is warm and calm, without waves.

From June to November is considered bad time for travel. Summer in Phuket is the rainy season. The sky is cloudy and overcast most of the time. It often rains, it is hot and stuffy outside. The sea is rough at this time and there are strong waves.

Pattaya. You can relax in Pattaya all year round.

The most popular time among tourists is from December to March. During these months there is practically no rain, the weather is sunny. The water is at a comfortable temperature, there are no waves.

From April the humidity gradually increases and Pattaya becomes stuffy.

May, September and October are considered less comfortable for vacation. In May the resort is very hot and stuffy. It often rains in Pattaya in September and October. At this time the sea may be a little stormy.

In the summer in Pattaya you can sunbathe, swim, and enjoy nature, but you need to be prepared for unexpected rains and clouds. The rains are not as intense as on the islands.
