Holidays in Thailand are a great opportunity to relax on tropical beaches at reasonable and affordable prices. It is no coincidence that this particular tourist destination is extremely popular among tourists from all over the world: Russia, Europe, America, China, Japan, South Korea and even Australia.

As you know, Thailand is washed by two seas: South China and Andaman. The most popular resort on the South China Sea is the mainland city of Pattaya, and on the Andaman - the island of Phuket. Therefore, when planning their holiday in Thailand, many travelers choose between these two “capitals” of beach holidays.

Ecology, parks, green area Many forests, parks, waterfalls, walking areas. The most popular parks: Safan Khin, Phra Thaew, Royal ParkPratumnak Hill is the only area where vegetation has been preserved. There is also a relatively small walking area. Heavy smog in areas of the city far from the coast

A comparison of Pattaya and Phuket clearly shows that Pattaya is more suitable for a secluded, relaxing holiday on the seashore, and Pattaya is more suitable for parties and entertainment. We can say that the whole of Pattaya is one continuous nightclub. During the tourist season, which lasts from early December to early May, there are always a huge number of tourists here. And since pedestrian sidewalks in Thailand are very narrow everywhere, in the evening on the central streets you can get into a real pedestrian traffic jam.

During the tourist season in Pattaya it is best to relax in large groups. It will be quite uncomfortable for one person here, since the atmosphere itself is conducive to constant celebration, noise and “extras”. When choosing a place to live, the best areas are Pratamnak and Jomtien, which differ from other places in their cleanliness and well-groomed appearance. Areas far from the sea are not very comfortable for long-term living, as there is often real smog due to exhaust gases and widespread street cooking.

If you are thinking about what to choose in Thailand, Phuket or Pattaya, then Phuket will certainly be more suitable for lovers of a good beach holiday. On this paradise tropical island, travelers always have access to crystal clear sea water, a huge amount of lush tropical vegetation, and exotic fruits. In addition, this is where comfortable five- and four-star hotels are located, which have their own private beaches for their guests.

Prices

If we compare which is cheaper - Pattaya or Phuket, then the most budget resort will undoubtedly be Pattaya. Since Phuket is far from the mainland, transport to this island is more expensive for Thai companies. Accordingly, prices for food, entertainment and housing in Phuket are noticeably higher than in mainland Pattaya. For example, we can consider the main categories of goods and services popular on resort holidays:

  • Restaurants. A full lunch (three courses for two people) in a Pattaya restaurant will cost 500 baht. In Phuket this amount will increase to 800-1000 baht.
  • Have a snack in eateries like McDonald's (for one person) in Pattaya you can get it for about 150 baht, in Phuket - from 250 baht.
  • Supermarkets. Prices in Pattaya and Phuket will be approximately equal only for chips, snacks, cigarettes, and essential goods. Meat, fish, vegetables, cheeses and wines are about 30 percent more expensive in Phuket.
  • Transport. Travel on public songthaews (open minibuses) in Pattaya costs 10-20 baht, in Phuket - 30 baht. A taxi ride in Pattaya from one area to another will cost about 60-80 baht, in Phuket - 200 baht.
  • Housing. In Pattaya you can find rooms for 5 and 6 thousand baht per month. However, you need to take into account that such housing, as a rule, has a lot of disadvantages: lack of windows, small size, old furniture, proximity to noisy night bars. In Phuket, housing prices per month start from 15 thousand, with daily payment - from 1 thousand baht. However, apartments in Phuket are almost universally different high level comfort, even if it is a three-star hotel.

Pros and cons of resorts

The ideal option is to visit both resorts, because they both have their own interesting and unique features. Near Pattaya there are many cultural attractions of Thailand, including the ancient capital of the country - Ayutthaya. Many interesting temples, palaces and fortifications have been preserved here. There are fewer parties and attractions in Phuket, but there are many more clean, spacious beaches. In addition, it is more suitable for families with children. It is on this island that there are the most hotels that provide special children's food, as well as mini-clubs and playgrounds for children. In addition, in Phuket it is easy to find a professional nanny from Russia who will stay with the child while the parents are busy shopping, visiting excursions or restaurants.

A holiday in Phuket will cost more, since prices there are 1.5-2 times higher. However, this applies not only to Phuket, but to all the Thai islands as a whole. If you think about it, such overpayments are fully justified, because only luxurious, clean beaches are available. For example, in Phuket there are ideal conditions for exciting sports such as diving, snorkeling or surfing. So if you want to explore depths of the sea or ride a board on the waves, then go here.

When choosing between Pattaya or Phuket, the obvious advantage of the first location is its proximity to Bangkok. The hotel on the seashore can be reached by taxi from the airport in an hour and a half.

Rain season

What to choose if your vacation falls during the rainy season, but you still want to go to Thailand? In this case, Phuket Island is definitely not suitable. In the Andaman Sea, high waves always rise during the rainy months, and it is simply impossible to swim there. But in the Gulf of Thailand, where Pattaya is located, it is always quiet, calm and there are no storms. And it doesn’t rain as often here compared to Phuket.

Oddly enough, the rainy season is perhaps the most suitable period for a beach holiday in Pattaya. At this time there are few tourists here, the beaches are deserted and there is no garbage. As a rule, the weather is always clear and warm in the first half of the day, you can sunbathe, swim and enjoy water sports. In the summer months, it generally rains quite rarely; the main peak of precipitation is October, November and the first half of December. If you want to have a cheaper holiday, it doesn’t hurt to know that in Pattaya during the “off season” you can generally live for mere pennies. At this time, you can rent spacious, comfortable apartments near the sea for 7-10 thousand baht per month.

Bottom line

Phuket is best suited for those who:

  • wants to soak up the sun on a clean beach where there are no crowds of people
  • flies on vacation with children
  • not interested in cultural attractions, preferring beautiful nature

Pattaya is best suited for those who:

  • loves active nightlife
  • uses the services of moths
  • wants to save money
  • wants to visit local attractions

Debates about which destination is the best have been going on since people first started coming to Thailand to relax. As in most other cases, here each of the opinions will differ in subjectivity. And there is no such place that would suit absolutely everyone. Much ultimately depends on the goals of the traveler himself, what he wants to get from the trip, and his personal expectations. However, still some key points can be compared with each other. Most tourists take them into account when choosing between these cities.

Resort city or island holiday?

A difficult dilemma - Pattaya or Phuket. They are located approximately 900 km from each other. Pattaya is located near the capital of Thailand, Bangkok. This densely populated city is also visited by more tourists. Phuket is much more relaxed as it is removed from the hustle and bustle of city life. Both places have their own advantages and will suit tourists with different preferences. Many factors can influence the choice of location. This is not only taste or interests, but also budget, as well as the company in which the traveler goes on vacation.

Weather

Which is better - Pattaya or Phuket - in terms of weather? It’s impossible to say for sure. Both resorts are different tropical climate. During the rainy season, massive cloud cover descends on Pattaya, which increases the humidity. It lasts until the end of the monsoon in August. By October, the air temperature becomes relatively cool, and in the evenings it can be quite chilly. In general, people vacation in Pattaya from mid-November to the end of May. The rainy season here is not so strong, but winter and early spring are not considered a tourist season.

As for Phuket, there is much more rainfall. It is recommended to relax in this place from November to April-May. Then the rainy season begins, when there is no escape from the monsoons. The water becomes cloudy and the sky is covered with clouds. So this kind of weather is hardly suitable for relaxation.

Beaches - where are they best? Overview of the coasts of Phuket

Answering the question “Where is better, Pattaya or Phuket?”, Let's start with the beaches. The opportunity to relax by the sea and at the same time have fun is one of the main criteria for many tourists. Of course, each destination has access to the ocean; however, the beaches of these two resorts cannot be called the same. As for Phuket, the coastline here is considered one of the best in Thailand. Pattaya or Phuket for many are opposites in terms of beaches. On the island they are distinguished by white sand and clear water. So those who want to have a great holiday on a tropical beach should undoubtedly visit Phuket. The main resort called Patong is popular due to its long coastline. True, during the tourist season it is always crowded. Nevertheless, Phuket is a fairly large island where each vacationer will find a suitable option for themselves.

The main resort areas in Phuket are Patong, Karon and Kamala. The latter is considered a calmer coastline. Laem Singh Beach is also popular. It is located in a small bay; like Kamala, this coast is considered one of the most peaceful places.

The options for a beach holiday in Phuket don’t end there. Tourists can also take a day trip to the islands located near Phuket. For example, to James Bond Island, or Phi Phi. Both of them are distinguished by picturesque nature and tranquility.

The coastline of Kata is popular in Phuket. This beach has beautiful sand, palm trees, clean water, soft seabed. Off-season you can go surfing here. In the northern part of the beach you can ride longtail boats. Sellers of inexpensive food and drinks are on duty next to them.

Let's continue the comparison of Pattaya and Phuket in terms of beaches with the next coast, called “Freedom Beach”. This is a 300 meter long strip that features some of the best white sand in Phuket. It is isolated from other areas, but has its own restaurant and sun loungers. There are no various entertainment options such as parasailing or water skiing, and tourists will not be distracted by annoying food sellers. Therefore, Freedom Beach is considered one of the best places where there is harmony of silence, relaxation and amenities. In Thailand, Pattaya or Phuket are popular for their coastlines, but it is the Freedom Strip on the island that is one of the main places of attraction.

There is another interesting beach - “Paradise” (translated from English as “paradise”). The name speaks for itself. Its length is less than 200 meters. It is separated by a small rocky headland, technically making it two beaches. Paradise has a soft seabed and snow-white sand. Its small coves also have a wide range of amenities, including restaurants, bars, sun loungers and much more.

Coast of Pattaya

Now let's pay attention to the coasts of Pattaya. Those looking to spend time at the beach may be disappointed by its beaches. Its main coast is a narrow strip of sand near Beach Road. The water in Pattaya is also not very clean. Sometimes dirty gray water from sewers ends up directly into the sea. Although in the photo it usually looks pretty decent.

Some of the best coastlines in Pattaya are Jomtien and Wongamat. Here, at least, you can relax and enjoy your seaside holiday. Although there can be a lot of people here during the tourist season, these coasts are still much more pleasant than other places. Despite the shortcomings of the beaches, it is still impossible to say where it is better - to Phuket or Pattaya - to go. You just need to correctly evaluate your own wishes and plans. Let's face it: few people go to Pattaya just for a beach holiday; spending time here will be more enjoyable for those who prefer nightlife, entertainment, and shopping.

As for Jomtien, it is located just two kilometers from the southern part of the city. Some call this coastline a "world apart" from the crowded shores of Pattaya itself. If a tourist wants to spend a quiet day, just lazing on the sand, this is the place where he can have a good time. There is also good nature, And a large number of restaurants, cafes and shops where you can provide yourself with everything you need for a weekend. Also in Jomtien there is the opportunity to go windsurfing and beach volleyball.

The beaches of Naklua and Wongamat are located not far from each other. This section of the coast is located just 15 minutes drive from Pattaya. You can simply take a taxi from the city and go on vacation to the picturesque coast. There is also big number expensive restaurants offering gourmet seafood dishes.

Safety

Now let's talk about this important aspect like reliability. For the most part, both resorts are relatively safe for the wary and attentive traveler. They are visited by a large number of tourists, so there is no need to worry if you do not make mistakes on your part. Both Phuket and Pattaya have their own red light districts, which are not particularly safe. In Pattaya, it is also not recommended to communicate with transgender people - people who have changed their gender. They are rarely seen in Phuket. However, as for Pattaya, communication with such people is often dangerous. For example, a tourist may have drugs placed in his bag, and then the attacker disappears. It is difficult for the police to prove that this package does not belong to the traveler himself.

Which is better - Pattaya or Phuket - in terms of safety? Generally speaking, standard rules for travelers apply in both places. Don’t get distracted in a bar or restaurant, forgetting that sleeping pills or narcotic substances may be added to your drink. You should not wander through deserted alleys at night, or go to places unknown to tourists in the company of strangers. As long as the traveler himself is careful, any city or island in Thailand will not be dangerous for him.

Budget

As for the price, Pattaya is slightly cheaper than Phuket. Traveling around the city is a little less expensive - here you can travel by public transport or rent a bicycle, unlike Phuket, where sometimes you cannot do without a ferry crossing. Especially if the traveler would like to visit various nearby islands.

Also, the cost of food and drinks in Pattaya is relatively lower than in Phuket. It is usually said that the resort city has a more active nightlife, however, the island also boasts a large number of different bars, discos and other entertainment venues. At the same time, on average, an active night in Pattaya will cost less than in Phuket. Although this difference cannot be called significant.

Which hotels are better in Thailand - in Pattaya or Phuket? Where can I find more comfortable and budget accommodation? As for the island, there are many fashionable hotels of various star ratings. The best places tend to be on the coastline, while the more budget-friendly ones are further inland. There are many inexpensive hotels in Pattaya, but not so many luxury hotels. A traveler with an average income will be able to stay in a hotel with a swimming pool at an attractive price.

What to do in Phuket?

Both the island and the city are major tourist destinations. Therefore, there are many options for activities here. Regarding Phuket, there are, of course, not many attractions here. You can visit the giant Buddha statue, Old Phuket, Wat Chalong temples and Phuket of the same name.

Most travelers love to take day trips. They visit the islands of Phi Phi, Koh Phangan, and James Bond Island. You can also go scuba diving and boating. Here you have the chance to admire truly picturesque nature.

Phuket is a little lacking in tourist attractions and cultural events, since the main activity here is beach holidays.

What Pattaya has to offer

In the resort city there are many things to do for tourists and there are enough interesting places for several days. Some of the main attractions are the Temple of Truth, Nong Nooch Botanical Garden, Ko Larn Island, Silverlake Vineyard and Big Buddha Hill. There are also bars in Pattaya that host cabaret shows, as well as dozens and hundreds of other entertainment venues of various types.

As for active recreation, you can also go diving here. However, Pattaya is not considered best place for this. Here you can also rent jet skis and go parasailing - such activities are suitable for those who are not afraid of risk.

Night life. Phuket

Many entertainment fans are attracted to Thailand. Phuket or Pattaya - both of these resorts are distinguished in this regard by a good selection of all kinds of places. Both on the island and in the city there is a special street filled with various bars, restaurants, and clubs. As for Phuket, nightlife is concentrated on Bangla Road in the Patong area. The road is closed to vehicles at night, only pedestrian traffic is allowed. Along this stretch you can find a large number of bars, discos and other establishments. Certainly, various clubs scattered throughout the city. But Bangla Road is the real epicenter of nightlife.

Entertainment in Pattaya

The resort town is essentially one giant party zone. There are several main areas here. The main one is the famous Walking Street.

It is sometimes said that all of Pattaya is one giant red light district. And many tourists agree with this opinion. The nightlife here is quite active. It is suitable for those tourists who like to drink and dance the night away.

Nutrition

In terms of food in Thailand, both Pattaya and Phuket are not exactly places that can compete. The reason is that the cuisine in both is really good. There are all the options here - both the opportunity to save money by purchasing food in the store and the opportunity to eat gourmet resort dishes.

Pattaya has a really wide range different options, however, even in Phuket it cannot be said that guests of the island are in any way limited in food. In both places, in addition to local dishes, you can find restaurants serving European, Mexican, French, and Indian cuisine.

Shopping

What to choose - Pattaya or Phuket - for shopping? In principle, everything you need can be found both there and there. Modern shopping centers, pharmacies and grocery stores are available both on the island and in the resort town. Of course, Pattaya is a larger area in this regard, and there are more shops in it. There are hundreds - and perhaps thousands - of different sales points. There are several large shopping centers. This is "Mike", "Harbor" and other places.

There is one large complex in Phuket. This shopping mall"Yungceylon Mall". Although the island has everything you might need on vacation, Pattaya is still more suitable for shopping.

What about hotels?

What differs Pattaya from Phuket in terms of hotels is the price and level of service. On the island, tourists can actually be spoiled for choice. Phuket - beach resort, and it, as already mentioned, has a much higher concentration of upscale hotels. There is much less choice here in terms of those hotels that are located below the average price. And most of these economy hotels are located far from the coastline.

As for hotels in Pattaya, this is the complete opposite. There are not enough four- and five-star hotels here. Most of the accommodation is available to middle class tourists and travelers with lower incomes. The resort town has hundreds of guesthouses, which may not offer many amenities but are a good option for budget travelers.

Most of these hotels do not even have websites on the Internet. All you need to do to find them is simply walk around the city in any area that the traveler likes. And he will be able to find many different options.

In search of an answer to the question “Where is the best place to relax?” Pattaya and Phuket are kind of opposites in financially. But this difference is not particularly contrasting, although Phuket can be called a more elite place.

Opinions of travelers

Many tourists turn to various forums in search of an answer to the question of where is the best place to relax. Pattaya or Phuket is one of the most frequently discussed topics. First of all, travelers pay attention to the distance of each point from Bangkok. In this regard, Pattaya wins because it can be reached from the capital of Thailand by car, while to get to Phuket you need to take a plane.

In reviews of Pattaya and Phuket you can also read that nightlife in Pattaya is much more developed. Those tourists who travel for all kinds of entertainment usually consider this option first. Concerning southern regions Pattaya, here travelers note the good condition of private beaches owned by hotels. However, as for public coasts, they are not so good for discerning vacationers. Compared to Pattaya, Phuket has better beaches on average.

On the other hand, some travelers note that Phuket itself is not as beautiful as it is depicted in photographs. Of course, each tourist will have his own subjective opinion, but such reviews should not be discounted either. IN Thailand Pattaya and Phuket are the most popular places. But usually such travelers still prefer Pattaya. You can often see recommendations of a hotel called Sheraton, which also has a good beach. Basically, such travelers consider the short distance from Bangkok to be almost the only advantage of Pattaya.

But still, answering the question of those planning a trip about which is better - Phuket or Pattaya, usually nature-loving tourists give preference to Phuket. There are quite a few nice beaches there too, and from there you can take some day trips to the islands, go diving and so on. Those wishing to take a break from the active nightlife are advised to go to one of the hotels away from the city. Pattaya has many more different entertainment clubs, spas, and bars. If this is what a tourist is looking for, he should definitely stay here. So the answer to the question about Thailand: "Which is better - Phuket or Pattaya?" - ambiguous. It's a matter of preference.

Where is better - Pattaya or Phuket? We conducted a large comparison of two major resorts in Thailand according to various criteria (sea, beach, prices for hotels and food, transport, flights), wrote a review and drew conclusions about where it is better to go on vacation.

Phuket and Pattaya are the two main resorts. Usually tourists choose between them, because few people fly to Krabi or Koh Phangan. We decided to help our readers with their choice - read and choose where it is better to relax.

Pattaya or Phuket: sea

Phuket. The sea is a million times better than in Pattaya! It is clean, you can see crabs and colorful fish swimming in schools in the shallow water. Diving and snorkeling are common. The entrance is flat almost everywhere, which is convenient for vacationers with children. The color of the water is rich blue.

Pattaya. The sea is a green turbidity with garbage. I don't want to go into the water. There are several beaches where the situation is better - Jomtien, Wong Amat, Pratamnak. Behind clear sea you need to sail to neighboring islands - Koh Larn, for example. It seems that everyone goes there to swim, since in Pattaya tourists exclusively sunbathe. The sea on the island is cleaner, but it is expensive to sail there every day: 2 hours and 120 baht per day for two are spent on ferry travel, plus food, drinks and fruit on the island are more expensive.

Beaches in Phuket and Pattaya: where is better?

Phuket. For a relaxing holiday, go to Phuket - the beaches there are picturesque and clean. Even one unloved by tourists was rehabilitated. This is not a paradise place, but the most comfortable place in Phuket for living and relaxing. Individual praises can be sung to the sand and silver pieces.

There are many beaches on the island - you can choose the one that suits you. We liked Kata Noi, Nai Harn, Yanui, Banana Beach and Mai Khao.

Pattaya. We didn't like the beaches of Pattaya. They are almost all dirty, crowded and noisy. Even if you manage to retire, traders will overtake you. The sand is the most common yellow. The central beach is lined with paid sunbeds and umbrellas.

Where are the best beaches?, in Pattaya or Phuket? Our opinion is that Phuket is much cleaner and more beautiful.

Banana Beach in Phuket is small, secluded and beautiful.
The beaches in Pattaya are quite busy. It is better to go to Koh Larn island.

Sights of Phuket and Pattaya

Phuket. Phuket's attractions are predominantly natural - numerous idyllic islands, beaches and observation decks. In addition, there is the Big Buddha, Wat Chalong Temple, Phuket Town Old Town, Soi Bangla and colorful shows and performances. The main attractions are other islands: Phi Phi, James Bond, Similan, etc. Most people go there on excursions.

Pattaya. It is richer in attractions: islands, Temple of Truth, elephant village, floating market, Khao Kaew Zoo, Alangkarn Theater, Nong Nooch Tropical Park, etc. Much of this can be seen on a bike.

Pattaya has a convenient location - it’s only about two hours away by bus, and this is where freedom for lovers of cultural recreation lies! In addition, from Pattaya you can get to Ayutthaya - the ancient capital of the Ayutthaya kingdom.

Last minute tours to Thailand. Which is cheaper: Pattaya or Phuket?

Vacation packages to Thailand can be very cheap! Often a ready-made tour package costs as much as an air ticket. See examples in.

Last minute tours for two to Pattaya from Moscow for 7-10 nights in high season can be found from only 60 thousand rubles! Vacation packages to Phuket usually cost the same or a little more. Tours are cheaper in summer.

Travel packages from St. Petersburg to Pattaya and Phuket usually cost from 80-100 thousand rubles.

Contingent

Phuket. Chinese couples (young ladies always in romantic dresses) and families with children rule the roost here. Indians walk arrogantly in Rolexes, and elderly Europeans and Americans approach go-go girls in bars. The Russians feel at home and try to convey something to the Thais in louder Russian. Perhaps the most Russian speakers are in the popular resorts: Patong, Kata, Karon and Surin.

Pattaya. The resort is dominated by older Europeans and Americans looking for a hot girlfriend for the rest of their vacation days. There are many young and middle-aged men, attracted by the open-mindedness of local workers and workers of the ancient profession. And - oddly enough - there are a lot of Russian tourists with children, decorously walking along the promenade.

In general, Pattaya is more of a retirement resort, while Phuket is more of a youth and middle-aged resort.

Hotel prices in Pattaya and Phuket: where is cheaper?

Pattaya. There are many hotels in Pattaya - from cheap nameless ones to expensive and well-known ones. Cheap guesthouses near the beach cost from $13 per night. In the mid-price category, we recommend The Pattaya Park 3* for $22 per day. Among the expensive ones, we recommend Siam @ Siam Design 4* from $75 per night. This hotel has a huge number of excellent reviews and is rated "excellent".

Advice: rent an apartment or villa on Airbnb.ru - it's more interesting! Fabulously beautiful villas in Phuket cost from $50. Pattaya has a huge selection of apartments.

Prices for food and fruits

If you choose which is better, Pattaya or Phuket, based on prices for food, fruits and drinks, then preference should be given to Pattaya. At the resort, even in tourist establishments, food prices are not off the charts. But in Phuket restaurants the prices are closer to Moscow. However, also on the island in local cafes, night markets and pop-up shops.

Pattaya Phuket (Patong)

Flights from Russia

From Russian cities you can fly to Pattaya and Phuket. There are direct flights and with transfers. Usually tickets to Bangkok are a little cheaper than to Phuket (but it also happens vice versa).

You can get to Pattaya through Bangkok, and from there by low-cost airline, transfer or bus. There are also direct routes from Siberian cities to Pattaya Utapao Airport.

If you don’t want to deal with local transport and travel with transfers, order a taxi - it’s reliable and simple. We used KiwiTaxi services when traveling from Patong to the airport.

Phuket or Pattaya which is better? This is roughly the question asked by tourists choosing a tour to Thailand. Similar questions are asked by those tourists who have already been to one of the resorts in Thailand and are choosing where to go this season.

The main differences in these resorts are their location and origin. So nature turned out that Phuket turned out to be an island, and Pattaya part of the mainland. Paved to the island of Phuket highway, this makes it much easier when moving around the country on your own. Many products are brought to Phuket from mainland Thailand.

Let's consider the most important aspects of a holiday in Thailand for a tourist. Everyone goes to Thailand for the clean sea, beautiful beaches and exoticism, but is this really so, and where are things better with exotic vacations?

The short conclusion is: holidays in Pattaya are suitable for young party-goers who love leisure and adventure, holidays in Phuket are chosen by married couples with children, for whom comfort is more important than entertainment (although there is plenty of entertainment here). About holidays in Phuket with children, read the link.

Climate, weather and seasons

The climate in Pattaya is much more pleasant in any season. In the dry season (from November to April) the probability of precipitation is minimal (it can rain 2-3 times a month, no longer than half an hour), the rest of the time the bright sun shines; in Phuket it can rain every week. During the rainy season (from May to October) it will rain in Pattaya no more than once a week, for a short duration, while in Phuket the rains will be more frequent and longer.

The climate is better in Pattaya.

Sea

A tourist flew from Moscow to Pattaya, waiting snow-white beaches, clear water and complete relaxation, but it turns out that the flight was in vain. And indeed, the state of the sea in the city is so-so, the most ordinary yellow sand on a narrow sandy beach and the water is cloudy.

Many tourists go to Koh Larn for swimming. It is located an hour's drive from Pattaya. You can get to Koh Larn by a regular ferry, which runs on schedule. Some tourists (me too) swim and sunbathe on the beaches in Pattaya, because the road to the nearest island of Koh Larn takes two hours (an hour there and an hour back), and on the island you need to use something to get around (I rent a moped), Thus, trips to the island are expensive, both in terms of money and time.

The sea around the island of Phuket is much cleaner and more pleasant than the sea in the city limits of Pattaya, and the sea here is different, in Pattaya it is the Gulf of Thailand, and the island of Phuket is washed by the Andaman Sea. The transparency of the water in Phuket is surprising, the water is warm, and the bottom topography is flat, which is especially important for tourists traveling with children.

The sea is better in Phuket.

Beaches and beach holidays

You can compare the noisiest and most crowded beach in Phuket - Patong, and even it looks much better than the city beaches in Pattaya. Many tourists speak extremely negatively about Patong, but it is so huge that you can even find your ideal place there. As a rule, the most crowded place in Patong is near the exit from Bangla Road, but move a little to the side and you will be happy.

Some of the beaches in Phuket are private and belong to hotels (both large and small), so if you want to sunbathe in splendid isolation, you can choose one of these beaches. The choice and variety of beaches on the island is amazing; there are both tourist ones with an abundance of vacationers, and completely deserted ones, both absolutely free, and those that charge an entrance fee.

The beaches are better in Phuket.

Attractions

It’s hard to say that there are fewer attractions in Phuket than in Pattaya; most likely they are a little different and are suitable for those tourists who love the natural beauty of Thailand.

But nevertheless, the number of excursions and attractions in Pattaya is off the charts and simply defies any analysis. There is everything here, from an amazing garden of million-year-old stones to trips to neighboring Cambodia, and if this is not enough, then the capital of Thailand, Bangkok, is only two hours away by bus.

For lovers of pristine natural beauty, you should definitely visit the world famous Similan Nature Reserve, which can be reached from Phuket, and if you are vacationing in Pattaya, be sure to go to the River Kwai.

There are more attractions in Pattaya.

Entertainment

There is many times more entertainment in Pattaya than in Phuket; the famous Pattaya Walking Street is rippling with advertisements for entertainment establishments. Walking Street is full of restaurants, nightclubs, discos, bars with girls (not all of them are girls, be careful), Go-Go bars, exotic shows (transvestite shows, X-shows, 69, etc.) .

In Phuket there is also an analogue of Walking Street called Bangla Road, the scope is not the same as in Pattaya, but lovers of hot drinks will find what they are looking for. In Phuket, you should choose the right place to stay, because all entertainment is concentrated in the Patong area. While the sun sets on Patong and evening life begins, the rest of the island goes into “sleep” mode.

Entertainment is better in Pattaya

Housing prices

Phuket is considered the most expensive resort in Thailand, but despite this status you can find housing there for 300 baht per day (details about the baht to ruble exchange rate), but do not be fooled by the low price, it is likely that a little later some feature of such cheapness will be revealed .

Housing prices in Phuket

In general, prices for accommodation are approximately the same, although there are a number of features. If there is any in Pattaya a good choice apartments (apartments), then in Phuket there is a huge selection of villas and small private houses for one family, but otherwise much is very similar. Taking into account the fact that a villa in Phuket can be rented for several families and save a lot, Phuket is more profitable.

In a word, if you are traveling with your family for a relaxing holiday, then it is more profitable to go to Phuket.

Prices for food and groceries

As for food prices, Phuket with imported fruits and vegetables is ready to surprise you with practical Moscow prices for fruits, and some restaurants may not be visited by all Russian tourists. This is especially noticeable in the Patong area. Sometimes it gets ridiculous, you choose what you want to buy, go towards Kata Beach and everything is the same there, but much cheaper. There are also very authentic roadside cafes with Thai prices.

The height of surprise for me (in the 2015 season) was the price of my favorite fruit - durian. Durian in Patong is sold already peeled for 1000 baht per kilogram ( approximately 28 dollars), while in neighboring Vietnam I bought the same durian for no more than 40,000 dong per kilogram ( about 2 dollars).

In Pattaya, food prices are more similar to Bangkok and bargaining is possible, as every Asian market requires. However, prices for everything else: restaurants, bars, massage, food, manufactured goods, entertainment, travel, motorbike rental, etc. in Pattaya are significantly lower than in Phuket and this is a fact.

However, you can go north from Patong, where you can also find more reasonable prices and more accommodating Thais, but for this you need to rent a bike.

All those who like to drink, eat and have fun are recommended to go on holiday to Pattaya, where everything is cheaper and much more interesting.

Where is it easier to get from Bangkok to Pattaya or Phuket?

If you are an independent traveler and arrived in Bangkok, then getting to the beaches of Pattaya will be much easier for you and, no less important, much cheaper.

Air travel from Russia to Pattaya is cheaper.

Summarize: Pattaya is suitable for noisy, fun companies, which are not averse to fitting into any adventure (sometimes very dubious), here you can also have a good time on excursions and other tourist attractions. Phuket is more suitable for a relaxing family vacation with children; holidays on the island are also often chosen by newlyweds to spend honeymoon.

Have a nice holiday in Thailand.

When choosing where to relax for the first time in Thailand, tourists often rush between the two most popular resorts: Pattaya or Phuket.

To make the right choice, it is not enough to compare photos on the Internet; you need to understand what you expect from your vacation. Let's look at the details and try to decide which resort is better: Pattaya or Phuket?

Sea

Our compatriots are looking for, first of all, a clean, warm sea in Thailand. If this criterion is also the most important for you, preference should definitely be given to Phuket with its crystal water and snow-white sand.

This is a busy resort city with heavy port congestion, which negatively affects the cleanliness of the water. Garbage flies into the sea: bottles, pieces of paper, bags, making swimming impossible. Only the most squeamish tourists swim in Pattaya itself.

The rest go to relax on remote beaches, or Wong Amat, and nearby islands. The most popular - .

You can get here from the mainland by regularly running ferries. A one-way ticket costs 30 baht, the journey will take about 45 minutes, but at the end of the journey you will find the clearest sea.

Beaches

In search of a beach holiday, relaxation on soft sand and photos with paradise landscapes, it is again better to fly to the largest resort in Thailand, the island of Phuket. The island has a huge number of beaches for every taste: from lively and long to tiny and secluded.

But even the most crowded and party-filled Patong (pictured below), which the locals consider not very suitable for swimming, is cleaner and more comfortable than the beaches of Pattaya.

Phuket is inferior to Pattaya in terms of infrastructure, but last years All types of beach holidays and water sports, snorkeling and diving are available on the island. The coastline of the island is sandy, flat, the entrance to the water is long, but there are beaches with depth. The water remains clean and warm throughout the entire season from October to May. When you get to the beaches of Phutek for the first time, you cannot believe your eyes that you are seeing this beauty live, and not on a postcard, TV screen or photo.

This is more of a place for parties than for relaxation and enjoying natural scenery. Developed infrastructure: cafes, discos, shops, bars, massage parlors - close to the beaches.

The central and southern beaches, the exception is Jomtien. It is calmer and cleaner in the north of the resort. Those seeking a relaxing holiday and families with children should take a closer look at Naklua Beach - a quiet, picturesque fishing bay in the northern part.

Or choose neighboring Wong Amat, the cleanest in the resort. Family tourists should avoid Dongtan - this is the most popular LGBT beach in all of Thailand.

Climate

There are no fundamental differences here. Both there and there the warm sea and hot sun will await you. It may be a little uncomfortable and humid during the rainy season. But it’s still better than minus 20 and snow.

Attractions

This item when choosing "Pattaya or Phuket?" plays in favor of the mainland. A vacation spent on the island will only reveal to you the traditions and culture of the country. After all, the main ones are natural. To get the full impression of Thailand, it is better to go to Pattaya.

The list of attractions in Phuket is not long: several temples, a butterfly or crocodiles farm, waterfalls. You can spend your entire vacation on sightseeing in Pattaya, and your entire flash drive on photos. Temple of Truth, Mini Siam Park, Elephant Village, Big Buddha Hill, Floating Market, Alangkarn Theater, Sriracha Zoo and much more. Most of this can be explored on a bike.

And when everything has been studied, the bus will take you to Bangkok in two hours, where the main attractions of the country are concentrated. Three hours on the road and you will reach Ayutthaya, the ancient capital of Thailand, where there is also something to see. The selection of organized excursions from Pattaya is also much better.

Prices

Phuket is one of the most expensive resorts in Thailand. Luxurious villas and fashionable hotels are concentrated here. Of course, you can find a modest room in a guesthouse for the same price as in other resorts in Thailand, but there is less choice, because Phuket is not aimed at poor tourists. Unless Patong offers a good selection of economical accommodation.

Rooms for two in a guesthouse from $20 per night. Two weeks of vacation in the same modest conditions can be booked for $200. In Pattaya, housing prices are more attractive and the choice of affordable guesthouses is large: you can rent a room for $10 per day.

Food in Phuket is more expensive, twice as expensive. Prices on the island are not “Thai” at all. If in Pattaya you can have a hearty meal at a convenience store for 30-40 baht ($1.5), then in Phuket it costs 50-70 baht ($1.5-2). If you believe the reviews and photos of tourists, dinner for two with wine in a restaurant this season costs 650 baht ($20) - 850 baht ($25).

Prices for fruits at resorts vary, especially on popular beaches, but generally within the range: mangoes 60-80 baht/kg ($2-2.5), pineapples 20-40 baht/piece ($0.5-1.2), papaya 40-70 baht ($1-2), mangosteen 40-80 baht ($1-2.3). When looking for cheap fruit, it is better to step away from busy tourist areas and buy fruit from car dealers or fruit markets.

Shopping opportunities are undeniably better on the mainland. And it’s even smarter to buy things not at the resort, but to go to Bangkok.

Taxi costs at an elite resort are also no joke: short trips between beaches - from 200 baht ($6), for long distances - from 1000 baht ($29). On the mainland and in Thailand in general, a trip up to 500 meters costs 100 baht ($3), more - 150-350 baht ($4.5-10).

Transport accessibility

The starting point for independent tourists is Bangkok. The easiest way to get to Pattaya is from Bangkok. Travel time from the East Station is 2 hours, ticket price is 120 baht ($3.5). In Pattaya, the most accessible transport is tuk-tuk. Getting from the bus station to the hotel costs an average of 30 baht ($1).

There is a bus from Bangkok to Phuket from South Station. Ticket price - from 600 baht ($18). You will have to spend at least 11 hours on the road. There is also air service: the most affordable tickets are from Lion Air: about 700 baht ($20) one way. There are minibuses from the airport to Potong: 180 baht ($5) per ticket. There are also regular buses, which are a little cheaper, but they run once an hour and end before 18:00.

conclusions

If you want to visit Thailand to immerse yourself in the colorful Asian culture, see national attractions, and hang out. If the clear sea outside the villa and idyllic photos are not fundamentally important to you, you are ready to waste time getting to the neighboring island. If you want to reduce spending on your vacation and at the same time travel without children, Pattaya is your option!

But if your first priority is a relaxing holiday surrounded by nature, a clean sea and beaches, if you have plans to attend a large number of sea excursions (, and so on), if you are going on vacation with children and are willing to pay money for comfortable stay, your direction is Phuket.

Pattaya or Phuket - it's up to you to decide! Choose the right resort for yourself, and you will definitely have the best impressions of Thailand, which will remain in your memory for a long time, in videos and photos.
