Strengthen, boost, support the immune system - it seems that any person who thinks about their health believes that they cannot do without such measures. Modern medicine has a different opinion on this matter. Which one - explains Dasha Sargsyan.

For the lazy, we will immediately give a brief summary of the article. Each of us has innate immunity and acquired immunity. Innate attacks everything at once, without much understanding. It is thanks to him that we experience all those symptoms of acute respiratory infections that make us feel so unhappy. Acquired (specific) immunity is much more complex. It targets specific bacteria and viruses that the body has already encountered, and fights them more effectively than the innate one. If contact occurs for the first time, then the cells of the immune system are “sharpened” for a new enemy and at the next meeting they react to it faster and more effectively. How exactly this all works is unknown. It is hardly worth stimulating the innate immune system in case of a banal acute respiratory infection, since the result is symptoms of the disease. No one knows how to strengthen acquired immunity, if not through vaccination. At a minimum, because a huge number of different cells are involved in its work, and stimulation of one type can in some unknown way affect the behavior of the entire immune system. The only group of similar over-the-counter immunostimulants that includes drugs that have proven their effectiveness and safety are bacterial lysates (bacterial fragments that activate the immune system). But we must remember that the vast majority of acute respiratory infections are viral infections, that is, baclizates cannot help here in any way, although they can reduce the risk of bacterial complications. All other over-the-counter immunostimulants are not sold as medicines in countries with a high level of medicine, since they have no proven effectiveness.

If you have any complaints about your immune system, go to a therapist, who will either independently develop an action plan or send you to an immunologist. Sometimes the problem is solved by following obvious recommendations for lifestyle changes. It is believed that normal sleep is the little thing that “supports” the immune system and that we can control. But you are not able to determine on your own whether you only need to change your lifestyle or undergo serious treatment. So - once again - it makes sense to go to the doctor if you don't like the frequency of your illnesses.

What to do if you get sick often

It is normal for an adult to get acute respiratory infections 2-3 times a year. If this happens to you more often, then it is quite possible that there is no particular problem here. But if this state of affairs causes you a lot of inconvenience, if you think that something is wrong, contact a therapist, who will either deal with your problem himself or refer you to an immunologist. Why not immediately see a specialist? The problem is not necessarily a deficiency of the immune system as a whole. For example, it may be a matter of local immunity, which largely depends on lifestyle. This happens with smokers: due to damage to the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, it is easier for viruses to penetrate into cells, and accordingly, a person gets sick with acute respiratory infections more often. Or, due to reflux (reflux of acid into the esophagus from the stomach), the mucous membrane is also damaged, and infections occur more often in the throat.

But if the issue is immunity and it needs to be “raised,” how to proceed? “To “raise” it, you first need to look at where it “lies,” says immunologist Ilya Korsunsky. Immunodeficiencies, that is, significant disorders of the immune system, can be congenital (primary, PID), or acquired (secondary). There are about 250 types that cause immunodeficiency. They usually appear in childhood, but sometimes problems can arise at age 40. To suspect primary immunodeficiency, you need to find at least two of them. These genetic diseases are treated in very different ways, from simple observation to bone marrow transplantation.

“If an immunological examination shows the norm, and a person is reasonably dissatisfied with his condition, we need to further look for the reason, which most often does not lie in immunology,” explains Ilya Korsunsky.

Are immunostimulants necessary?

Immunostimulants are divided into several groups:

1. Bacterial lysates

Baclizates are preparations based on bacterial fragments. A rare case among immunomodulators: their mechanism of action is clear, and the effectiveness of some has even been proven in. They activate specific immunity, provoking a defensive reaction to the invasion of supposedly bacteria, but in fact only their parts. That is, such drugs are used to prevent bacterial infections.

2. Interferons (top sellers: Cycloferon, Viferon, Grippferon, etc.)

A substance called interferon is produced by cells in response to something foreign invading the body. This component of innate immunity prevents the proliferation of viruses. Whether there will be any benefit from introducing additional interferon into the body in the form in which over-the-counter drugs exist is unknown. Pediatrician Evgeny Komarovsky in his book “ARI: a guide for sane parents” writes: “The most relevant direction for the therapeutic use of these drugs<искусственных интерферонов>- therapy of oncological, very severe, life-threatening viral infections, the causative agents of which are weak inducers (activators - editor's note) of interferon - viral hepatitis, herpetic and HIV infections. Most of the products are intended for injection use, have many side effects and a significant (sometimes huge) price.” As for interferons used topically (for example, in the form of drops), their effectiveness and safety are still limited in accordance with international standards.

3. Interferon inducers (top sellers: Kagocel, Amiksin, Arbidol)

Interferon inducers are everything that activates nonspecific immunity. For example, viruses are inducers of interferons. But why use such drugs separately? “The absolute majority of ARVI pathogens are strong inducers of interferon, which means that there is no need for additional stimulation of interferon formation,” writes Evgeny Komarovsky in the book “Medicines. A Handbook for Sensible Parents. Moreover, these drugs have been studied rather poorly, even abroad for the prevention or treatment of acute respiratory infections.

4. Immunoglobulins

Immunoglobulins are essentially antibodies (proteins that bind to invading viruses or bacteria) that are isolated from donor plasma. “Such drugs are transfused to a person with a proven lack of his own immunoglobulins,” says Ilya Korsunsky. - It's like insulin for diabetes. A person even receives a disability if this condition is not transitory, but permanent.”

5. Homeopathic medicines (“Anaferon”, etc.)

There is nothing special to say about homeopathic medicines, because due to strong dilution they do not contain a single molecule of active substance, they have nothing to do with science, and if you want to buy

How to boost immunity?

And is it necessary to raise it at all? Doctors advise to be wary of various medications and drugs to strengthen the immune system, and even more so, not to engage in such “self-healing” without consulting a doctor. Uncontrolled intake of even seemingly harmless natural remedies for the immune system (based on echinacea, ginseng, licorice, elecampane and other immunomodulator and adaptogen plants) can, on the contrary, cause a serious blow to the immune system. And weaken her greatly. So don't risk your health! It’s better to remember about simple, affordable and, most importantly, absolutely harmless.

Be less nervous

It has been scientifically proven that stress has a destructive effect on the body’s immune system and its resistance to viruses decreases. Stress hormones and glucocorticoids, which suppress the immune system, are to blame for this. That is why those who are nervous about any reason and live in a state of nervous tension get sick more often and longer.

Spend more time outdoors

Take a walk in the fresh air (of course, not along the road, but somewhere in a park or forest) - this is the simplest advice that can be given to boost immunity. Such walks enrich the blood with oxygen and improve the functioning of monocytes and other cells in our body, which are responsible for its protective functions and neutralize bacteria and viruses. And if there is a pine or spruce grove nearby, it’s generally wonderful: coniferous trees also emit phytoncides that cleanse the air of bacteria and viruses.

Be active

Physical inactivity is a lack of functioning of the muscular system, and not a lack of movement in general, as many are accustomed to thinking, and is one of the worst enemies of our immunity. Due to insufficient load on the heart muscle, oxygen metabolism in the tissues worsens. In addition, the circulation of blood and lymph slows down - and the circulatory and lymphatic systems, as you know, are the basis for our immunity. The slightest disruption in their work significantly weakens the immune system.

Alexey Kovalkov

nutritionist, presenter of the programs “Food with and without rules”, “Family Size”

A healthy lifestyle is unthinkable without basic physical activity. But man has immobilized himself: cars, elevators, TV, even the steering wheel in the car has power steering... I always tell my patients that it is best to start physical activity with simple walking, but if you still decide to master the exercise machines, that’s also not bad. If you feel uncomfortable walking down the street, buy a home exercise machine and make it a habit to exercise on it at a certain time.

Eat foods that are good for your immune system

A varied, balanced diet is the key to good immunity. Particularly useful for strengthening the immune system:

    garlic (suppresses viruses, has an even wider antibiotic spectrum of action than penicillin);

    onions, including red and leeks (like garlic, it is very rich in phytoncides - volatile biologically active substances that can kill microbes);

    ginger (rich in phytoncides, cleanses blood and lymph);

bell pepper and (excellent sources of vitamin C - the main vitamin for immunity).

Also don't forget about dairy products: they promote the colonization of the gastrointestinal tract with beneficial bacteria. And 70% of our antiviral immunity, according to the World Health Organization, depends on the health and intestinal microflora. Therefore "alive" yoghurts, kefir, fermented baked milk, yogurt and other foods rich in “good” bacteria should be in your diet daily!

Get a good night's sleep

In addition to the fact that people who constantly do not get enough sleep are more susceptible to stress and nervous breakdowns, lack of sleep is harmful to the immune system at the genetic level. A recent study by scientists at Yale University, USA, proves that disruption of natural biological rhythms activates a special gene, TLR-9, which makes our body more susceptible to infections. By the way, keep in mind that chronic diseases can also worsen because they also undermine the immune system.

Get rid of pockets of infection

Chronic tonsillitis, sinusitis and other sometimes not very annoying ailments are dangerous because they gradually undermine the body’s defenses: the immune system has to work under constant stress. And no means for immunity will help fully until the source of infection is eliminated. Harmful and banal for the immune system. So don’t forget about preventive dental examinations!

Have you ever felt like you were making plans, conceiving grandiose achievements... And... Oh! Stop! A stop with a sad name: “Acute respiratory disease or viral infection.” How can we make sure that there are fewer such stops, or none at all? A strong immune system will help with this. If you are wondering how to increase immunity in an adult or child, then this article is for you. It explains what immunity is and provides recipes and tips on how to improve the body's resistance to infections and boost immunity.

HOW TO INCREASE A CHILD'S IMMUNITY

How to boost a child's immunity? Those parents whose children often get sick have to think about this.

Stubborn statistics tell us that the number of sick children ranges from 20 to 40% of the total number of children. Therefore, if your child is often sick, then pay attention to 8 tips to boost immunity.

8 important rules for strengthening your child’s immunity:

1) A certain temperature regime must be maintained in the children's room. Immunologists advise: no higher than +18–20° C during the day and a little colder at night.

2) Maintain proper ventilation. Maintain a certain level of humidity, because when the air is dry, the mucus in the nose turns into dense crusts, making breathing difficult.

3) Maintaining a daily routine. The child should not be overtired. You should allocate a place in your daily routine for a walk, at least 1 hour a day.

4) Fresh air. Traveling out of town. The combination of light and pleasant physical activity with fresh air will work wonders! Yes, this is a free and effective way to boost a child’s immunity, because it is available to everyone.

5) Hardening. This is also an important point in order to increase the child’s immunity. There is no need to unnecessarily bundle up your child at home or when getting ready for a walk. Dress for the weather and your baby's activity levels. If possible, let your child walk barefoot on sand or grass in the summer, of course, when it is warm outside.

6) In the summer, it is good for a child with a weakened immune system to spend at least two weeks by the sea, or better yet a month.

Vitamin D obtained along with the rays of the sun is involved in cell regeneration and protein production . But the passion for “tanning” will not bring anything good. . If you stay in the sun for a long time, then the destruction of immune cells occurs; their reactions to pathogenic bacteria are suppressed.

7) It is important that children’s diets include fresh fruits that are in season. In summer and autumn, wild berries: blueberries, wild strawberries, blueberries, lingonberries, raspberries. The body must receive all the vitamins and microelements it needs. The child will get sick less because his immunity will be strong.

8) The body must receive physical activity. A sedentary lifestyle weakens the child's immune system.

9) Follow the vaccination schedule.

10) Give your child vitamin supplements in the fall and spring. But for this you need to consult a pediatrician. You should not buy the first vitamins you come across at the pharmacy yourself, because you can harm your child’s immunity.

WHAT IS IMMUNITY?

Immunity the ability of the body to resist infection, that is, a measure of resistance to attack by pathogenic organisms. The defenders of the body are lymphocytes and macrophages, they are also the main immune cells-soldiers on the battlefield with foreign microorganisms.

Why is immunity needed?

Usually a person does not notice the constant struggle that immune cells wage for his health. Only when the immune system cannot cope with viruses does a person get sick. A person needs the immune system to resist pathogenic invasions. Therefore, it is extremely important to have a strong immune system in order to be healthy and energetic.

Types of immunity.

There are several types of immunity.

The first immunity begins to form in a person with mother's milk. It is called congenital because it is transmitted to the child from the mother through the placenta.

The second type is acquired immunity. It can be acquired in two ways:

  • Naturally, after an illness. Then antibodies begin to form in the body, the activity of which is aimed at destroying certain viruses. Thanks to this type of immunity, a person does not become infected with this infection again.
  • Acquired immunity formed through grafting or vaccination. These are, for example, vaccinations against measles in children, tetanus or diphtheria. It does not completely prevent the disease, but it helps the body cope with the disease more easily.

The history of the first vaccine. It was created by an Englishman, Dr. E. Jenner. In 1796, this doctor noticed that farmers who came into contact with cows sick with smallpox did not get sick with human smallpox. He decided to vaccinate a village boy with cowpox. After conducting several experiments on infecting a child with smallpox, he proved that vaccination protects the child from infection with human smallpox. This is the story of the first vaccine. There are now more than 100 types of vaccines that protect people from infectious diseases. Such terrible diseases from which entire cities died out. Smallpox, anthrax, cholera, typhoid fever. Vaccination is one of the important modern methods of creating immunity. After the vaccine is administered, antibodies appear in the human body, which then protect him from infection.

Important to remember! You should be revaccinated against diphtheria and tetanus every ten years. This is necessary to maintain immunity.

Dysbacteriosis will not be slow to appear with all the ensuing consequences, because the intestines suffer from overeating. There is only one way out. Start every morning by taking probiotics. In strengthening the immune system, preventing dysbiosis and restoring the balance of microflora will help save the intestines. Probiotics, taking them, can improve the appearance, condition of facial skin and hair. Beauty vitamins simply will not be absorbed in a poorly functioning intestine. Beauty and good immunity are sisters-girlfriends.

Immunity is our body’s natural defense against harmful microbes, viruses and diseases, which is why it must be constantly strengthened and improved. The best period for this purpose is summer, because it is the period that is richest in fresh vegetables and fruits, and, consequently, in vitamins and nutrients.

Our body’s immune defense works constantly, so it will not be possible to avoid the attack of foreign cells. But this and some other conditions (including eating too fatty foods, a long course of antibiotic treatment, the negative influence of environmental factors (radiation, industrial waste, exhaust gases, etc.)), stress and age suppress the immune system, weakening it. Constant fatigue, increased incidence of insomnia, drowsiness, fatigue, increased incidence of colds, aching joints and muscles can be considered the main signs of a weakened immune system.

Recipes for folk remedies to boost immunity.
Now, with winter approaching, the use of honey as a general tonic is more important than ever. It can be drunk with tea, especially effective in combination with green teas and freshly squeezed lemon juice or a slice. Drink half a glass twice a day. The strengthening course includes three weeks of therapy.

A healing decoction of berries and herbs is an excellent vitaminizing and tonic for boosting immunity. To prepare it, you need to prepare a herbal mixture, which includes one hundred grams of mint, chestnut flowers, fireweed, and lemon balm. Grind everything thoroughly, take five tablespoons of the resulting mixture, pour into a bowl with a thick bottom, and pour in a liter of boiling water. After this, place the saucepan on low heat and keep it (after boiling) for five minutes. Next, remove the broth from the heat, wrap it well and leave to infuse for a couple of hours. After the specified time, strain the broth and add two liters of compote made from berries (fresh, frozen, dried) cherries, currants, strawberries, viburnum. Cook the compote without adding sugar. This aromatic drink should be taken half a liter per day. Drink half an hour before meals.

And here is another not only useful, but also very tasty way to increase immunity, according to folk recipes. Grind through a meat grinder half a kilo of cranberries, a glass of peeled walnuts, four large green apples (pre-core). Pour the resulting mixture with 100 ml of water, add half a kilo of sugar. Place the mixture over low heat and stirring constantly, bring to a boil. Transfer the mixture into a clean container with a lid. Take a tablespoon throughout the day, or drink tea without sugar.

To strengthen the immune system, you can also mince half a kilo of dried apricots, raisins, prunes, and walnuts. Add the same amount of honey to the mixture, stir everything thoroughly, transfer to a container with a lid, and store in the refrigerator. Take a tablespoon on an empty stomach, half an hour before breakfast. This recipe can be slightly modified by adding two lemons with peel instead of prunes (turn through a meat grinder).

The following recipe perfectly increases the body's defenses. Grind 250 g of onion (can be done in a blender), add 200 g of granulated sugar, pour 500 ml of water into the resulting mixture and put on low heat for an hour and a half. Next, add two tablespoons of honey to the mixture, stir and cool. After this, it is important to strain the product and pour it into a clean container. You need to take this decoction one tablespoon three to five times a day, fifteen minutes before meals.

When there is increased mental and physical stress, as well as when the body’s defenses are weakened, this remedy is ideal (suitable for children and schoolchildren): 100 g of peeled hazelnuts should be lightly fried in a dry frying pan. Once cooled, place in a coffee grinder and grind. Then add a pinch of vanillin. Place the mixture in another bowl and add half a liter of full-fat milk (natural, rustic - ideal). At the end add two tablespoons of honey. If you are intolerant to honey, you can replace it with sugar. After this, the product still needs to sit for about twenty minutes, after which you can drink it. Take small amounts throughout the day. The next day prepare a new portion.

A composition made from lemon juice (four large fruits), half a glass of aloe juice, 300 g of liquid honey and half a kilo of chopped walnuts perfectly strengthens the immune system. Stir the mixture thoroughly and add 200 ml of vodka to it. Infuse the product in a cool and dark place (as always) for 24 hours. Take the medicinal composition one tablespoon three times a day, half an hour before meals.

It is very good during epidemics of influenza and other colds to support the immune system with this mixture: combine freshly squeezed carrot and radish juices, taken 100 ml each, add a tablespoon of lemon and cranberry juice. Add another tablespoon of liquid honey to the finished mixture. Drink throughout the day. Make a new portion every day.

Fish oil, so disliked by children of the Soviet period, strangely enough, still finds its use in our time. It is recommended to drink one teaspoon per day. Sea fish and other seafood have a beneficial effect on the immune system, so it is useful to include them more often in your diet.

A decoction of spruce needles also has general strengthening properties. To prepare it, you should collect spruce needles and rinse them thoroughly with cold water (you will need two tablespoons). Place the pine needles in a saucepan, add 200 ml of boiling water, close the lid tightly and put on low heat for twenty minutes. Then leave the resulting broth for half an hour and strain. Add honey to the prepared liquid to taste. Take 200 ml three times a day.

Here is another very effective recipe for stimulating the immune system: mix and chop 150 g of nettle and lemongrass, add 50 g of sage. Now brew a teaspoon of herbal mixture in a thermos with 200 ml of boiling water. Leave this remedy for at least two hours, then strain and combine with a teaspoon of liquid honey. Use this remedy in the morning, after meals.

Freshly squeezed juices have an excellent tonic and restorative effect. Drink red juices in autumn and spring in courses of three weeks (pomegranate, grapes, cranberries, strawberries, blackberries, cherries, beets (diluted half with water). During the first week, drink 100 ml of juice three times a day, the second week - the same amount, only twice a day, the third week - the same amount, but once a day.Between courses you should take a break of ten days.

Nowadays, special medicinal preparations have been specially developed to strengthen the body's immune system (or immunity). These are mainly immunotropic drugs. Let me make a reservation right away: you cannot take them uncontrollably, that is, you cannot prescribe them to yourself. This can trigger the development of serious negative consequences. They are prescribed only by a doctor based on the results of the patient’s clinical picture.

Vaccination also helps maintain immunity; in particular, the most popular vaccinations are against hepatitis and influenza. This procedure stimulates the body to produce antibodies on its own.

Nowadays, there is a wide variety of vitamin complexes that can also be taken to increase the body's protective properties. In this option, it is recommended to do this in courses in the fall and spring (usually the course lasts a month). However, remember that only a doctor can prescribe a complex that is right for you. It is very important that in spring and especially autumn the body receives the necessary dose of ascorbic acid or vitamin C. But here, too, there may be limitations, for example, some diseases.

Homeopathy is considered today a fairly popular way to strengthen and heal the body, including children. I also note that drugs of this kind are prescribed only by a medical specialist (homeopath) and only after diagnosis. Drugs in this group can cure allergies, get rid of colds and strengthen the immune system.

Do not forget about the usual hardening of the body and playing sports, because they are effective ways to increase human immunity. Contrast showers, dousing with cold water (you need to start with moderately cool water, gradually lowering the temperature), swimming - all this plays an irreplaceable role in the fight to strengthen the immune system. There are no ages for hardening. However, the process must be constant, gradual, and the individual capabilities and characteristics of the organism and the climatic conditions of the region of residence should be taken into account. It should be noted that hardening procedures are contraindicated after a night without sleep, during physical and emotional stress, in case of illness, and also after eating. In addition to hardening, yoga, aerobics, morning jogging, and fitness are recommended to strengthen the immune system. All this should also be carried out systematically and with a gradual increase in loads.

A healthy intestine is one of the main components of a strong immune system. This is due to the fact that in one of its parts there are cells of the immune system. Therefore, it is very useful to consume foods with lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, as well as probiotics.

It is advisable to use each of these methods in combination, then the result will not be long in coming.

Traditional medicine can be no less effective in strengthening the body's defenses than, say, medicinal drugs. Some plants and medicinal herbs can actually increase the body's defenses. Plants with such properties are also called immunostimulants. Among them are echinacea, St. John's wort, ginseng, garlic, licorice, red clover, aloe, celandine, Chinese lemongrass, yarrow and many others. However, it should be noted that if such plants are abused, depletion of the body may occur, which is caused by excessive consumption of enzymes. In addition, some herbs can cause persistent dependence or addiction.

Pollen has an excellent biostimulating effect; its composition is rich in vitamins, nutrients, amino acids, etc., thanks to which, when used in a course, it increases the body's resistance to infectious diseases.

These recipes use only natural products, so to speak, folk remedies. Study, choose the most suitable recipe for you. If in doubt, consult with specialists.
