Prayers of Thanksgiving for Holy Communion

Glory to You, God. Glory to You, God. Glory to You, God.

Prayer of thanksgiving, 1st

I thank you, Lord, my God, for you have not rejected me as a sinner, but have made me worthy to be a partaker of your holy things. I thank You, for You have vouchsafed me, who is unworthy, to partake of Your Most Pure and Heavenly Gifts. But the Lord, the Lover of Mankind, for our sake, died and rose again, and granted us this terrible and life-giving Sacrament for the benefit and sanctification of our souls and bodies, grant this to me for the healing of soul and body, for the driving away of all that is resistant, for the enlightenment of the eyes of my heart , into the peace of my spiritual strength, into unashamed faith, into unfeigned love, into the fulfillment of wisdom, into the observance of Thy commandments, into the application of Thy Divine grace and the appropriation of Thy Kingdom; Yes, we preserve them in Your shrine, I always remember Your grace, and I live not for myself, but for You, our Master and Benefactor; and thus having gone from this life to the hope of the eternal life, I will achieve everlasting peace, where those who celebrate the unceasing voice and endless sweetness, who behold the ineffable kindness of Your face. For You are the true desire and the inexpressible joy of those who love You, Christ our God, and all creation sings to You forever. Amen.

Prayer 2, St. Basil the Great

Master Christ God, King of the ages, and Creator of all, I thank Thee for all the good things He has given me, and for the communion of Thy most pure and life-giving Mysteries. I pray to Thee, O Kinder and Lover of Mankind: keep me under Thy roof, and in the shadow of Thy wing; and grant me with a clear conscience, even until my last breath, to worthily partake of Your holy things, for the remission of sins and eternal life. For You are the living bread, the source of holiness, the Giver of good things, and we send up glory to You, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer 3, Simeon Metaphrastus

Having given me flesh by Your will, fire and scorch the unworthy, do not scorch me, my Creator; rather, go into my mouth, into all my parts, into my womb, into my heart. The thorns of all my sins fell. Cleanse your soul, sanctify your thoughts. Confirm the compositions with the bones together. Enlighten the simple five of feelings. Fill me with Thy fear. Cover me always, keep me, and save me from every deed and word of the soul. Cleanse and wash and adorn me; Fertilize, enlighten, and enlighten me. Show me Your village of the one Spirit, and not to anyone the village of sin. Yes, like Your house, the entrance of communion, like fire, every evildoer, every passion flees from me. I offer prayer books to You, all the saints, the orders of the disembodied, Your Forerunner, the wise Apostles, and to this Your undefiled, pure Mother, graciously accept their prayers, my Christ, and make Your servant a son of light. For You are the sanctification and the only one of ours, the Good One, of souls and lordship; and like unto You, like God and the Master, we send all glory every day.

Prayer 4

May Thy Holy Body, Lord Jesus Christ, our God, be unto me for eternal life, and Thy Honest Blood for the remission of sins: may this thanksgiving be unto me joy, health and gladness; at Thy terrible and second coming, vouchsafe me, a sinner, to the right hand of Thy glory, through the prayers of Thy Most Pure Mother and all the saints.

Prayer 5, to the Most Holy Theotokos

Most Holy Lady Theotokos, light of my darkened soul, hope, protection, refuge, consolation, joy, I thank Thee, for Thou hast vouchsafed me, unworthy, to be a partaker of the Most Pure Body and Honest Blood of Thy Son. But She who gave birth to the true Light, enlighten my intelligent eyes of the heart; You who gave birth to the Source of immortality, revive me, killed by sin; Even the merciful Mother of God, have mercy on me, and give me tenderness and contrition in my heart, and humility in my thoughts, and appeal in the captivity of my thoughts; and grant me, until my last breath, to receive consecration of the most pure Mysteries without condemnation, for the healing of soul and body. And give me tears of repentance and confession, to sing and praise Thee all the days of my life, for Thou art blessed and glorified forever. Amen.

Now do You let Your servant go, O Master, according to Your word, in peace: for my eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared before the face of all people, a light for the revelation of tongues and the glory of Your people Israel.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us (three times).

Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us; Lord, cleanse our sins; Master, forgive our iniquities; Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy name's sake.

Lord have mercy (three times).

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven! Hallowed be it your name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, as it is in heaven and on earth. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, just as we forgive our debtors; and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Troparion of St. John Chrysostom, tone 8

With your lips, like the lordship of fire, grace shining forth, enlighten the universe: do not gain the love of money and the treasures of the world, showing us the height of humility, but chastising with your words, Father John Chrysostom, pray to the Word of Christ God to save our souls.

Kontakion, tone 6

Glory: You have received Divine grace from heaven, and through your lips you have taught us all to worship the one God in the Trinity. All-blessed John Chrysostom, Reverend, we worthily praise you: you are a mentor, as if you are manifesting the Divine.

If the Liturgy of St. Basil the Great was celebrated, read

Troparion to Basil the Great, tone 1:

Thy message went out into the whole earth, as if it had received your word, which thou hast divinely taught, thou hast clarified the nature of beings, thou hast adorned human customs, the royal priesthood, reverend father, pray to Christ God that our souls may be saved.

Kontakion, tone 4

Glory: You have appeared as an unshakable foundation for the church, giving to all inconspicuous dominion by man, sealing with your commands, the unappearing Reverend Basil.

And now: The intercession of Christians is not shameful, the intercession to the Creator is immutable, do not despise the voices of sinful prayers, but advance, as the Good One, to the aid of us who faithfully call Thee: hasten to prayer, and strive to supplicate, ever interceding, the Mother of God, who honor Thee.

If the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts was celebrated, read the troparion to Saint Gregory the Dvoeslov, Basil

To the Great, voice 4:

Whom have we received from God above divine grace, O glorious Gregory, and whom we strengthen with strength, who thou hast deigned to walk in the gospel, from whom thou hast most blessedly received from Christ the recompense of labor: pray unto him that he may save our souls.

Kontakion, tone 3

Glory: You appeared to the Chief to be the shepherd of Christ, the monks of the succession, Father Gregory, instructing the heavenly fence, and from there you taught the flock of Christ with His commandment: now you rejoice with them, and rejoice in the heavenly roofs.

Lord have mercy (12 times). Slava: And now:

We magnify Thee, the most honorable Cherub and the most glorious without comparison, the Seraphim, who gave birth to God the Word without corruption, the real Mother of God.

Communion is a sacrament that occupies an important place in the life of every Christian believer. Like anyone church rite, Communion is accompanied by prayers. A certain set of prayers is read before the sacrament - in preparation for it. After receiving the Holy Gifts, the time comes for prayers of thanksgiving for Holy Communion.

In church practice, all preparatory measures taken by a believer before Holy Communion are usually called fasting. Particularly significant in fasting is prayer preparation. First of all, it concerns the prayer rule.

The prayer rule during fasting should be observed by the Orthodox more carefully and diligently. Prayers - morning and evening - must be read in full, and not a single prayer text can be skipped. If a believer is not accustomed to reading the canons, then during preparation for Communion it is necessary to recite at least one canon per day. The following are required canons:

  • canon of repentance to our Lord Jesus Christ;
  • prayer canon to the Most Holy Mother of God;
  • canon to the Guardian Angel;
  • Follow-up to Holy Communion.

An indispensable part of the rite of Holy Communion are thanksgiving prayers. Prayers of thanksgiving for Holy Communion must be heard in church already on the day of the Sacrament - immediately after partaking of the Holy Mysteries. The Church also allows Orthodox Christians to pronounce them independently upon arrival home.

Other stages and elements of fasting

Fasting, prayer and repentance are the “three pillars” of preparation for the rite of Communion. In addition to the prayer preparation discussed above, fasting includes:

  • fasting in food and drink;
  • bodily cleanliness;
  • staying at the evening service on the eve of Communion;
  • confession before attending the liturgy, as a result of which the clergyman puts forward a “verdict” on the believer’s admission to Communion;
  • fasting and abstaining from drinking on the day of receiving the Holy Mysteries - from midnight until the beginning of the Sacrament;
  • attending the liturgy on the day of Communion.

In total, the fast takes several days and is directly related to both the physical life of the Orthodox and the spiritual. Regarding bodily life, this means abstinence from sexual intercourse and strict restriction in food (fasting). During fasting, it is not allowed to eat food of animal origin (meat and dairy products, eggs, fish). You can include plant foods (fruits, vegetables, cereal products) in your menu in moderation.

While preparing for Communion, you should put aside thoughts about everyday affairs and avoid all kinds of entertainment. Before the sacrament, you need to forget all your grievances, improve relationships with others, make peace with everyone, let go of all emotions negative character. It is advisable to spend the days preceding the Sacrament in solitude and reading spiritual literature.

Everyone who is preparing for Holy Communion must confess. Exceptions to this rule are children under 7 years of age and people in a dying condition. Confession is held either in the evening - before Communion, or in the morning - on the day of the Sacrament, before the start of the liturgy. On the day of receiving the Holy Mysteries, the believer must come to the temple before the start of the service.

How to receive the Holy Mysteries?

The Holy Gifts are received in a strict queue. The first to receive communion are the clergy and people who have any connection with the divine service, then it is the turn of the elderly, women and children, the last are the men and all the remaining people. By the way, women are not allowed to come to the Sacrament during menstrual bleeding, and also to paint their lips before partaking of the Holy Mysteries.

When approaching the Chalice with the Gifts, you should voice your name. Having accepted the Blood and Body of Christ, you must kiss the edge of the Cup without crossing yourself. You cannot touch the Chalice with your hands and kiss the hand of the clergyman.

The behavior of an Orthodox Christian on the day of Communion, in order to preserve the accepted Christ in his body, must be reverent and decent.

How often should I take communion?

The first generation of Christians received communion every Sunday. Modern believers do not have such an opportunity. The Church instructs to turn to the Sacrament during every fast, once a year - at least.

Holy Communion is a sacrament during which a Christian believer partakes of Christ's Body and Blood under the guise of bread and wine. Communion gives the Orthodox the opportunity to mysteriously merge with Jesus and thus get closer to eternal life.

Communion is very important for a religious person, since Christ himself established it during the Last Supper with 12 of his disciples - the apostles - the day before he accepted suffering for humanity.

First, He took, blessed, and divided the bread among the apostles, saying that it was His Body, then He did the same with the wine—His Blood. In addition, the Son of God gave his disciples (and through them, all believers) the commandment that the sacrament of Communion should be celebrated from now on forever - in memory of His torment, death and Resurrection.

Every Orthodox Christian must take communion in order to enter the Kingdom of Heaven after his earthly existence and receive eternal life. Without Communion, a person will not be able to achieve perfection in spiritual life. God's grace, which the believer will receive in the process of Confession and Communion, will awaken his soul and body, have a healing effect, strengthen his faith and reduce his vulnerability to sinful passions.

Glory to You, God. Glory to You, God. Glory to You, God.

Prayer of thanksgiving after communion

The days of unity of peace of mind with God are called Communion. In addition to ordinary days when everyone can ask and pray, there are also those specially designed for this. On the days of communion, believers experience physical and mental renewal.

There are a large variety of prayers that are aimed at thanking God for accepting all people, regardless of the number of their sins.

Prayers after Communion text

This text of the prayer is aimed at saying “thank you” to the Almighty for everything that he suffers from people. And also in the prayer there is a request for protection and pardon.

Text of the prayer:

“May Thy Holy Body, Lord Jesus Christ our God, be unto me eternal life, and Thy precious Blood for the forgiveness of sins. May this thanksgiving be to me joy, health and gladness. At Thy terrible and second coming make me worthy, sinner, to stand to the right of Your glory, through the intercessions of Your all-pure Mother and all Your saints. Amen."

It is given for a petition for long life, as well as for a petition for pardon on the terrible Day of Judgment.

Prayers after communion, thanksgiving: when to read?

The names of the prayers already indicate the time of reading; this can be done after Communion. You can thank God at any time of the day, but it is recommended to read precisely these texts of prayers after receiving Communion.

The Holy Mother of God acts as an intercessor before the Almighty, and therefore exists separate prayer appeals to her.

All believers have the right to pray and give thanks to God. Regardless of nationality, financial status, or gender.

It's never too late to ask for mercy and give thanks! The most important thing is that the gratitude is sincere and pure. It was done soberly, and with all my heart.

Sacrament of Communion

Before carrying out this action, the priest must cleanse himself, and he should also not take any food before Communion.

After confession during Communion, all people line up and pray;

At the moment of taking out the cup with gifts, it is necessary to make three bows;

When it’s your turn, you need to go up to the cup and say your name (full), then open your mouth as wide as possible and take Communion (sip and kiss the side of the cup);

After the manipulations, you need to go to the table and drink a cup of water diluted with a small amount of wine, and then immediately eat a small piece of prosphora.

At the end of the sacrament, you must leave the Temple after closing the Royal Gates.

Prayers after Communion: what is the interpretation

The first thing to do after the rite of Communion is to offer words of gratitude to the Almighty Lord, for the fact that he is the Intercessor of all Orthodox believers, despite all the sins committed.

The text of the first prayer may be as follows:

“I thank you, Almighty, for accepting me, a sinner, for allowing me to join your Shrines, for honoring me with the sacred rite of communion.

God, Lover of Mankind, who died for us and rose again, who gave us his life-giving Mystery, for the good and sanctification of body and soul, I ask you, make them live in me, heal soul and body, protect from evil and enemy, open your eyes and my heart and direct my spiritual strength to unshakable faith, pure love, fill it with wisdom to keep Your Commandments, grant your grace of God.

Preserve in me the memory for Your mercy, help me to live not for myself, but for You, Lord Benefactor. So that when I leave worldly life I found myself eternally in Your world of peace and universal happiness.

Hereafter You are the Lord - the true goal and joy of all believers, may we sing Your name forever and ever, God. Amen."

The following prayer words are thanksgiving to the Lord St. Basil, The Almighty gave him faith and the opportunity to understand the saints church sacraments and purify your soul and thoughts. Vasily addressed the Lord with these words:

“Holy Lord, Creator of our world, I am deeply grateful to you for all the blessings that I have, for communion with your Holy Sacraments. I pray to you, Lover of mankind, keep me under your wing, allow me with pure thoughts and conscience to partake of your Holy Sacraments and ask for eternal life and forgiveness for sins committed."

You are the Most High Bread and Light, the Giver and Source of the righteous spirit, to you we send prayer. Amen.

How to behave after Communion?

How to behave after the rite of Communion, how to preserve the grace received, how to use the gift for good and enrichment of God.

Judging by spiritual and everyday experience, sometimes it is easier to get than to keep what you already have. If we talk about a gift from above, then using such a gift correctly is very difficult for the recipient. If used ineptly, good can turn into evil when the gifts of God are neglected.

One striking example of this is the history of Israel. back side The Bright Gift in case of unworthy election means heavy blows in life; even in the writings about the Eucharist they spoke about deaths and serious illnesses unworthy of communion.

That is why it is important not only to properly prepare for the rite of communion, but also to behave correctly after the benefit received.

The first question, which lies literally on the very surface - is it possible on the day of communion, instead of the evening prayer for repentance and contrition, to read a prayer after communion with gratitude at night? Not just to ask for the Lord’s alms, but to ask “to enter into body and soul, bones and joints, to forgive all sins.” These words are very strong and carry a special meaning, repeated repetition of such simple words on the day of communion, it will increase gratitude to the Lord in the soul of the believer, giving rise to chastity and the desire to receive communion as often as possible.

After the Liturgy, Saint John very often remained in the altar, where he read the Gospel, fingered the sacred rosary, prayed tirelessly, and went to his worldly work even with effort, so he did not want to leave the sacred altar. This is a kind of lesson that the modern pace of life, worldly busyness and preoccupation with affairs harms concentration on faith.

After the communion ceremony, you should try not to rush into routine affairs, be in silence, clear your thoughts and surrender to divine reading.

There are no exact statements, but one of the Optina elders, most likely Barsanuphius, on the day when the rite of Communion took place, it was useful to read the writings of John the Theologian. In the sense that these texts will tune the believer to perceive the mysteries of the Lord. But this is more likely not advice, but an outline of the general contours of the rules that on the day of communion you need to devote maximum time to studying the Lord’s word and righteous works.

After a Christian has touched the Sacrament of Communion, and in his heart there is a corner of God, the invisible forces of evil that controlled him recede. From the one who receives communion, all evil and all sinful passions flee.

But the evil sides are not asleep either. They try with all their tricks and tricks to push the believer into the abyss of all sorts of worldly worries, to lower the communicant into the abyss of ignorance, oblivion, cowardice, petrification and insensibility. And sometimes because of human negligence evil forces this is quite possible. We must learn to use the sacrament as a weapon of victory sent to us from above, to unite ourselves with the savior, and not to plunge into rampant sin and confusion that reigns everywhere.

It is important to understand and feel the wealth of gifts given to us during communion; by these thoughts the Saints will judge the world. And we will have exactly as much faith and righteousness as we have accumulated over the course of our lives, and in the terrible hour of judgment it is on these facts that the verdict will be pronounced.

And remember, sometimes you don’t need to wait for anything, you need to learn to use it and appreciate everything that we already have. And in this situation, this concerns the honorable keeping of the Lord’s communion.

Conclusion

There are a lot of questions about communion and related rules, and in the opinion of the abbots, such topics should be included in the topics of Sunday schools to study the rules and Charter of churches. But it is definitely impossible to leave such questions unanswered, otherwise an incorrect concept, thought up by one, picked up by another and passed down through generations, can harden and turn into a tradition that will not lead believers to the Lord, but, on the contrary, will lead them away from him.

But the Lord, the Lover of Mankind, for our sake died and rose again, and gave us this terrible and life-giving Sacrament for the goodness and sanctification of our souls and bodies, let us also be here for the healing of soul and body, for the knowledge of everything opposed, to enlighten the eyes of my heart , to the peace of my spiritual strength, to unashamed faith, to unfeigned love, to the fulfillment of wisdom, to the observance of Your commandments, to the application of Your Divine grace and the appropriation of Your Kingdom ; Yes, in Thy holiness we preserve them, I always remember Your grace, and I live not for myself, but for You, our Master and Benefactor; and so from this life I have come out of the hope of the eternal life, in the everlasting peace I will achieve, where those who celebrate the unceasing voice and endless sweetness, who behold the unspeakable kindness of Your face. For You are the true desire and the inexpressible joy of those who love You, Christ our God, and all creation sings to You forever. Amen.

For You are the living bread, the source of holiness, the Giver of good things, and to You we send glory, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Who has given me Thy flesh to eat by Thy will, O fire and scorch of the unworthy, do not scorch me, my Creator; rather, go into my heart, into all my parts, into my womb, into my heart. The thorns of all my sins fell. Cleanse your soul, sanctify your thoughts. Confirm the compositions with the bones together. Enlighten the senses of a simple five. Just nail me to Your fear. Always cover, keep, and save me from every deed and word of the soul. Cleanse and wash and adorn me; Fertilize, enlighten, and enlighten me. Show me Your village of the one Spirit, and not to anyone the village of sin. Yes, like Your house, the entrance of communion, like fire, every evildoer, every passion flees from me. I offer prayer books to You all the saints, the orders of the bodiless, Your Forerunner, the wise Apostles, and to this Your undefiled pure Mother, whose prayers graciously accept, O Christ, and you Make Your servant a figure of light. For You are the sanctification and the One of ours, Better, souls and lightness; and like unto You, as unto God and the Master, we send forth all glory every day.
