When planning a trip, you should carefully consider the choice of holiday destination in Vietnam. The country's area is small, but due to its strong extension from north to south, the weather is different: in the northern regions a temperate tropical climate prevails, while in the south it is hot throughout the year, with rainy seasons raging from May to October.

Climate, water temperature, air temperature and weather description in Vietnam by month

Russian tourists prefer to vacation in Vietnam in winter - in February, in spring - in March, April, when smooth, warm weather sets in, while their native expanses are already annoying with snow and winds.

Vietnam is washed by the South China Sea, so it is suitable for families with children to get some sunny positivity in the middle of winter, gain health and get back to school and work.

Best season to travel to Vietnam: February, March, April

Let's describe the weather by month. Indeed, the most best months for holidays – February, March, April. No matter what city you are vacationing in (Nyan Trang, Phu Quoc), the weather is pleasant everywhere.

The average daily temperature in February is +25°C, in the southern resorts +30°C, but due to the proximity of the sea it is easy to breathe, the air is dry, you can spend the whole day on the beach, hanging out in a hammock under a palm canopy, reading a real book (not an e-reader), sometimes flying into nirvana. By evening the weather drops to + 21°C, giving you the opportunity to enjoy the seascape and a walk along the cozy streets of resort towns.

The sea in February warms up to + 24-26°C in southern regions, in the northern part no more than +22, so for comfortable rest set your priorities: if you love only the sea and the beach, you definitely want to go to the southern part of Vietnam; If you want extended excursion programs into the interior of the country, pay attention to the northern district.

For lovers of privacy, the beaches in Dong Hoi are suitable, where you can see the endless sea and sandy shore to the horizon. There are very few Russian tourists, and Europeans only come to hotels for the evening barbecue.

Take into account: An alternative to 3 and 5 star hotels is small private hotels, which offer bungalows for a family without any special requirements for amenities. For those who like to be closer to nature, this is a good budget option.

May June July

The first half of May is especially favorable for a holiday in Vietnam, and given the Russian spring holidays, you can arrange a short vacation at sea for the whole family. The rainy season begins in May, but due to the peculiar location of the country, it occurs in the evening or at night, while it continues to persist during the day. hot weather.

The northern regions are very comfortable for relaxation, but in the southern latitudes there is unbearable stuffiness that is poorly hidden even by the sea breeze. At this time the sea warms up to fantastic temperatures of +30 °C, you can swim until you are exhausted. The air is humid, sweating is increased, even the lightest clothes instantly become wet.

Please note: The weather during this period is not suitable for hypertensive patients, people with heart disease, and overweight.

But for all lovers of the sea and the sun - the most freedom! June for the north of the country is the month of cyclones. The rainy season in Vietnam begins - it can rain for two weeks in a row, and this is not a boring drizzle, but a real downpour. If we consider the amount of precipitation by month, then this period is the leading one.

The weather is dry in June in the central part of Vietnam, for example in the cities of Hoi An and Hue there are 3-5 cloudy days, the air temperature is +30, but it is easy to breathe and the sea is warm. In July the weather differs little from the previous month. Phu Quoc Island receives the most rain. 100% humidity and an air temperature of +31°C are reminiscent of a steam room, a very uncomfortable time for a vacation. Before heading to Vietnam, pay attention to the location of the resorts.

Note: and heavy rains are incompatible concepts, no matter what numerous reviews and weather forecasts say. By month, if we look at the whole year, then precipitation, of course, falls, as elsewhere in Vietnam, but more often in the evenings and nights, and is also short-term.

May 30-34 25-28 28-30 Precipitation occurs at night, and its frequency varies by region. There are only 3 rainy days in the Hue region, and 15 in Sapa. You must carefully choose a resort, focusing on average climatic indicators.
June 27-33 21-23 28 The rainy season sets in throughout the entire territory, with many cloudy days and high humidity. In the center of the country the climate is drier, however, it is hardly suitable for holidays with children, despite high temperature waters and clean beaches.
July 29-35 25-26 25 Precipitation is kept to a minimum, a month of rest is for those who like hot days and can easily tolerate high temperatures.

August, September, October

In August, tourists do not favor holidays in Vietnam, but in vain. If you choose the right resort, you can purchase vouchers at a minimal cost and spend a pleasant few weeks enjoying the sun and warm sea.

The northern part says goodbye to the rainy season, the sea warms up to +28, the air temperature is even higher, the humidity remains high. In Hanong Bay, a third of the month is rainy; Hanoi is flooded for 14-15 days in August, and frequent typhoons paralyze the city.

For lovers of rain, cloudy weather and blues, this is the most beneficial place to relax.

In the central part the weather is completely different. The rainy season here is unique; all the moisture spills at night, without interfering with your rest. The sea maintains a magical +29°C. Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue are great places to relax in August. Thanks to the climate, the gorgeous vegetation in Vietnam, bamboo, rose, camphor, sandalwood, coniferous plantings, remain green all year round.

In August, the southern regions are dominated by rain and are not suitable for recreation. It’s worth coming only for the Day of Wandering Souls - national holiday, when it is believed that on this day dead and living souls can communicate with each other.

If you are planning to see the sights of Ho Chi Minh City in September, you need to urgently reconsider your plans. Despite warm weather, 20 days out of thirty it rains here, and you won’t be able to admire the pagodas, Notre Dame Cathedral of Saigon, and the Ku Chi Tunnels. It is worth changing either the vacation spot or the month of vacation.

The weather in Vietnam in October is good in the northern regions of Vietnam, where the rainy season has already subsided (Hanoi, Ha Long), and the southern resorts remain under the rule of rain. It is better to avoid the central districts; the sea in October is warm but cloudy. The waves are frequent and it is impossible to swim.

November, December, January

Vietnam has very unique climatic conditions. The climate is influenced by distance from the sea, mountainous terrain, and the length of the country from north to south. The distribution of precipitation is uneven, so when choosing a travel holiday, pay attention to the area where you live and the average temperatures.

It is worth noting: in 2016, 263 thousand Russians visited Vietnam, and a record 9 million foreign tourists entered the country.

Weather in Vietnam in November: the north of the country is conditionally preparing for “winter” beach season closed, air temperature + 21-26 °C. If seaside holidays are not your main priority, you can use northern resorts for excursion programs. The surroundings of Sapa will delight you with a riot of vegetation, forays into the surrounding villages where the traditions of the small peoples of Vietnam are preserved, and when you visit Ha Long Bay, you will seem to find yourself in a world of fairy-tale illusions, the coloring of the mountain-sea landscape is so beautiful.

For beach relaxation in November, the southern part of the country is suitable, where the temperature persistently stays at +28-30, and the sea is only a couple of degrees lower.

Worth considering: Before your trip, find out what the weather is like in Vietnam now. But in any case, no matter when you vacation in Vietnam, you need to take your usual medications with you. Vietnamese medicine gives preference to herbs.

December continues to remain a warm month by Russian standards, with less precipitation everywhere. In the north, the temperature is slightly above 20, suitable for excursions into the interior of the country, for celebrating the New Year on the shores of the warm sea.

By the end of December, the weather finally improves, hotels in Vietnam are filled to the maximum with tourists, and spas/beauty salons are fully operational. At the resort, travelers enjoy a wide beach, white sand and a gently sloping entrance to the sea.

In the south, especially on the island of Fukuoka, it is high season. Air +30°C, water 2 degrees lower, humidity 70%, sea calm.

Tourism to Vietnam is gaining momentum, becoming a good alternative to holidays in Turkey and Thailand. With the right place and time, relaxation will bring a lot of positive emotions.

You can get acquainted with exotic Asian culture, taste unusual dishes made from snakes, turtles, pythons, swim in the warm South China Sea, or feel like a pioneer, making your way through the mountains to hot springs. The flight from Moscow is tiring and takes 9 hours, from 7. But to get acquainted with a different culture, traditions and cuisine, it’s worth the risk!

Rainy season in Vietnam lasts up to six months, but never passes simultaneously throughout the entire country. This allows tourists to choose those resorts where they will not need an umbrella or a raincoat.

By the way, even the rains aren't that bad, as it seems. This time can be spent in a cafe or in a hotel. And you won’t have to sit for long - the heat and sun will replace the refreshing downpour.

The only “but”: in the center and north of Vietnam the weather is dominated by monsoons. They raise high waves, and holidays at sea can become unsafe.

That is why beach lovers are better off choosing the southern direction.

Undoubtedly, the weather is one of the determining factors when choosing a travel destination. If you are going to Vietnam, then there is no particular need to rack your brain with the question “When is the best time to go?” There is no sweltering heat here, as shown in films, and temperatures are pleasant all year round. The weather in Vietnam depends greatly on what region you are in. Therefore, to the question “When is the best time to go to Vietnam?” you need to answer comprehensively, taking into account not only the time of year, but also the region. This will be discussed in this article.

Most of the country is tropical monsoon climate. The considerable length of Vietnam from north to south allows you to capture several climatic zones. Thus, the weather in Vietnam not only changes from season to season, but will also differ in different regions.

Monsoons divide Vietnam's climate into 2 seasons: from November to April with the northeast monsoon and from May to October with the southwest. And the regions are divided into 3 parts: northern, central and southern.

Weather in Vietnam depending on the monsoons

Northeast monsoon: weather in Vietnam in winter and spring

The northeast monsoon prevails in Vietnam between November and April and brings with it cool and dry weather. In the capital of Vietnam - Hanoi, located in the northern part of the country, average temperature in November it is 21°C. In subsequent months, the temperature drops even more. This is the best time to visit Hanoi as the weather is warm and dry.

January is the coldest month of the year. From February, temperatures begin to rise again, and in May the southwest monsoon arrives, and temperatures in Hanoi reach 30°C.

Even though the northeast monsoon brings with it cool and dry weather, we remember that we also need to consider the region. While in Hanoi in January it is about 17°C, in Ho Chi Minh City the average is 26°C. The mountainous regions in the far north of the country are coldest.

From November to April there is virtually no rainfall in Vietnam. December and January are the driest months in the entire country. The rainy season begins in April.

The period from December to January is considered the best for traveling to Vietnam. If you're heading to the south of the country, you'll avoid the hottest and most humid days that begin in May. In the north-west of the country it is very sunny at this time. There is a certain chance that you will get caught in a downpour at this time, but this is the exception rather than the rule.

Southwest monsoon: weather in Vietnam in summer and autumn

From May to October, Vietnam experiences hot and humid weather. The rains begin in May and the amount of precipitation increases steadily until July. As a result, July and August are the rainiest months. Precipitation levels have been decreasing since September. The rainy season begins in the south of the country and after about a week reaches the northern part of Vietnam.

Also from May to October the temperature reaches its maximum. The hottest time is in April, when the dry season has not yet begun, and the temperature has already risen above 30°C. In the north of the country, the hottest months are in June and July, which, combined with high humidity, causes a lot of inconvenience. Makeup literally drips off women's faces, and no deodorant can protect your armpits from getting wet. You have to shower 2-3 times a day.

None of this means you need to avoid Vietnam from May to October. Unstable weather is more than compensated for by low prices and fewer tourists. At this time of year, it is best to travel in the northern part of the country and avoid hilly areas. In summer and autumn there is a lot of sun in Vietnam, the rains are heavy and end quickly, but there is a chance that they will last for several days. This is also typhoon season.

Weather in Vietnam depending on the region

Weather in northern Vietnam

The weather in northern Vietnam tends to be colder than other countries South-East Asia at the same longitude. Traditionally, the seasons in Vietnam are divided into 2 periods - summer and winter, but in northern Vietnam sometimes all 4 are distinguished: pleasant spring (usually March-April) and autumn (October-December), Cold winter(December-February) and hot summer (June-July).

Weather in central Vietnam

Central Vietnam is conventionally divided into 2 subregions - the coastal lowlands and the central highlands. In the coastal part, as a rule, there is less precipitation and higher temperatures, because... From April to October it is protected from the monsoon by the Truong Son Mountains. During the winter season (from November to March), the coast is colder and there is more rainfall, and it is also prone to hurricanes and typhoons.

But in the central highlands, during the rainy season there is a double portion of precipitation, but it is not hot here throughout the year. If you like this weather, then welcome to Dalat or Pleiku - two major cities in this area. Closer to the south, the coastal cities of Qui Nhon, Nha Trang and Phan Thiet, on the contrary, have hot weather of 21°C - 32°C all year round.

Weather in southern Vietnam

Southern Vietnam is close to the equator and has a typical humid tropical climate, which is excellent for growing rice. The average annual temperature ranges between 27-32°C. Unlike the north, there are only two main seasons: dry and rainy. During the rainy season (May to November), it rains almost every day, resulting in occasional flooding of the streets in Saigon. During the dry season from late February to April it is very hot here and only with the arrival of rains it becomes a little cooler. Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) is especially popular from December to March. The weather here is at its most pleasant at this time of year.

In general, the climate in Vietnam is so dependent on the season and region that the average annual temperature for the entire country is not at all indicative. Due to the fact that the weather in Vietnam varies depending on the region, you can come here at any time of the year and move around the country. I recommend spending February to March in Saigon, and then gradually moving north. But the choice is always yours.
