The climate of Australia is subequatorial in the north of the continent, tropical in the central part, subtropical in the south of the country, and temperate on the island of Tasmania. Due to its location, Australia has earned the honorary title of “Country where everything is the other way around” - when in most parts of the world winter prevails, in Australia it is hot summer, and when summer season in Europe, Russia and many other countries of the world - Australia welcomes winter. In winter - summer, in autumn - spring, that's how he lives. In addition, an incident of nature is that it is much warmer in the north of Australia than on its southern side, which again contradicts the usual logic. In Australia, when the north “suns”, the south “freezes”.

Cheap flights to Sydney

Due to the large extent of the continent and its area, Australia has a fairly diverse climate. Climatic conditions on the continent are determined by its position near the equator, on both sides of the tropics. The continent is heating up greatly and has the status of the driest continent on Earth. One cannot but agree with this, because the vast territory of the country is occupied by vast expanses of deserts that stretch almost 2.5 thousand km from the coast Indian Ocean to the foothills of the Great Dividing Range.

In general, the Australian continent has a hot climate. The hottest areas are the central regions of the country. The south-eastern part of Australia is characterized by a Mediterranean climate, similar to the climate of the European Mediterranean countries - Spain and Southern France. And the coolest part of the country is the island of Tasmania, where a typical British climate reigns - cool in summer and rainy in winter.

The hot climate and low precipitation mean that almost 60% of the country has no flow to the ocean and has only a sparse network of temporary watercourses. No other continent has such a poorly developed network inland waters, like in Australia. The annual flow of all the rivers of the continent is equal to only 350 km³.

Since Australia is in Southern Hemisphere globe, then the “standard”, for many, winter months - from December to March, are considered summer here.

So, summer in Australia begins... at the end of November - beginning of December. Yes Yes exactly. Summer in Australia is the driest and hottest time of the year. Summer Australia is a big sizzling frying pan. Most hot area Australia – Great Sandy Desert, where the temperature almost all summer stays at +35°C and even higher. In the center of the mainland, near the city of Alice Springs, in summer time During the year, the daytime temperature often rises to +45°C (!), and at night drops to zero and below -4 - -6°C (!).

In the most populated part of the continent - the eastern part (Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney, Newcastle), in the summer season, when the weather is quite hot, it often rains heavily, in contrast to the west of Australia (Perth) - where the summer weather is consistently clear and hot. During the day it is about +28°C, and the nights bring freshness and relief - +14°C, while in Sydney the nights are slightly warmer than in Perth - +17°C. The weather in South Australia (Adelaide, Melbourne) in the summer season is mild and sunny: the daytime air temperature is +25 - +28°C, almost the same temperature and the water - you can sunbathe and swim to your heart's content.

January is mid-summer in Australia, so you shouldn’t expect temperatures less than +30°C at this time of year, but for the central regions of the continent, the January norm will be a temperature of +40°C.

The eastern part of the country is not so hot, the climate here in January is quite favorable, for example, in Sydney during the day it reaches +26°C, and at night up to +18°C. It will be a little colder in January in Melbourne - +25°C, and the nights will be noticeably cooler, up to +13°C. In the western part of the country (Perth) it is still cloudless, and the air temperature is high, reaching +32°C. But in the north of Australia, summer is the rainy season; in January in Darwin it can rain for up to 20 days in a row!

February is the last month of summer in Australia. At the same time, in the northern part of the country the weather is hotter than in the southern part. In the eastern part of the country in February, comfortable, cool weather is still observed; in Sydney, the average daytime air temperature is about +26°C, and at night +18°C. The water temperature reaches +22°C. In the southern part of Australia, it is also comfortable, for example, in Melbourne during the day the air warms up to the same level as in Sydney, but the nights are noticeably cooler - +13°C. In the west of Australia (Perth), the weather is hotter, and during the day the thermometer shows +31- +33°C, and at night +17°C. The water here is slightly warmer than in Sydney, and is +23 - +24°C.

Autumn in Australia begins in early to mid-March. Autumn is a golden time in Australia: all the forests, parks and reserves of the country are transformed into red and gold shades, mesmerizing the eye. The heat is gradually subsiding, but the swimming season is still going on, the water is like fresh milk, and the sea is full of jellyfish: the Queensland state authorities are even installing special nets on the beaches to protect swimmers from burns.

In March, southern Australia experiences warm, comfortable weather and no sweltering heat. For example, in Melbourne during the day it is about +23°C, but at night average temperature The air drops to +12°C, so for evening walks you will need warmer clothes. The water off the coast of Melbourne is quite warm, with an average temperature of +21 - +22°C.

On the east coast of Australia, air temperatures are also beginning to slowly drop. In Sydney, in March, during the day, on average, +25°C, and at night +17°C. But hardly anyone will want to swim this month, since the water temperature is only +19°C. In addition, in March the rainy season begins in Sydney - autumn in eastern Australia is a rather rainy time of year.

The northern part of Australia also reduces temperatures already in the first month of autumn. Here at the beginning of autumn there are enough severe thunderstorms, and although, for example, in Darwin, it is still hot in March and the air temperature during the day is +30 - +32°C, it rains every third day. In central Australia, March is still hot, the average daytime temperature in Alice Springs is +32°C, dropping to +17°C at night. In this part of the country the influence of autumn is not so noticeable; it is still hot and dry here.

April is mid-autumn in Australia. In general, air temperatures throughout the country continue to drop – in some places faster, in others slower. It is quite comfortable and not at all hot in April on the east coast of Australia - in Sydney it is +22°C during the day, and only +13°C at night. Who wants cooler weather, welcome to Canberra - here in April it is +19°C during the day and +12°C at night. Well, those who like hotter weather can head to the center of the country, to Alice Springs and Ayers Rock. During the day, in April, the weather is excellent for sunbathing - +27°C, but in the evenings it is quite cold, and by night the air cools down to +12°C.

In Western Australia the weather in April is wonderful, but gradually becomes cooler and rainier. In Perth in April - +25°C, at night up to +12°C, but you can still swim, the water is warm - about +22°C, although there are slight winds.

May is the last autumn month in Australia. In western Australia, the weather is still quite comfortable - +21°C, but it is raining more and more often. On the east coast of the continent, rain in May is also not uncommon: in Sydney you can get wet in the rain, which is not uncommon here in May. The air temperature is getting lower and lower, and during the day it is already approximately +20°C, and at night, only +10°C. The water also cools down, and in May it is only +18°C. In the south of the country, the weather in May is very unstable: Australians joke that in Melbourne you can observe all 4 seasons in a day. In May in Melbourne during the day it is only +17 - +20°C, and at night it can get colder to +10°C.

IN central regions Australia is still dry, although, in general, the air temperature is declining here too; the average daily temperature of +22°C in Alice Springs is very difficult to call the temperature of deep autumn. Despite this, in May, at night it is very cold here - the temperature drops to +8°C and below.

The weather in Melbourne is slightly cooler than in Sydney, and it also rains in May.
In the interior of southern Australia the weather is dry. But, as you move closer to the sea, the climate becomes more favorable and mild. In Adelaide, for example, during daylight hours the average is +18°C, and at night +9°C. The water off the coast is only +16°C.

Cheap hotels in Sydney

Winter in Australia begins in early June, no matter how strange it may sound. Yes, when summer is in full swing in our country, Australians are “freezing” at this time. Although it’s hard to say that it’s cold in Australia in winter. In general, the air temperature in almost all regions does not fall below +10°C. The Australian winter lasts until the end of August.

During the winter season, the continent cools down: in the northern part, on average, by 5 - 6°C, and in the southern part, by 10 - 12°C. At this time, an area of high pressure is established over the mainland, and the north of the country is influenced by hot and dry southeastern winds, which is why it receives virtually no precipitation.

Winters in South Australia are mild but wet. For example, in Adelaide, in June the air warms up during the day, on average, to +16°C, and at night it cools down greatly to +7°C. It's cool and humid in the west of the country, in Perth, for example, around +18°C during the day and only +8°C at night. In Canberra in June it is even cooler; during the daytime the thermometer shows +12°C, and at night it is completely cold, only +6°C. On the east coast of Australia, such strong temperature jumps are not observed; in Sydney, the weather is still moderate - +17°C during the day and +8°C at night. The water here in June reaches its minimum level of +16°C.

In June it will be quite cold in Tasmania, with a westerly wind prevailing here. At this time of year, unstable weather with cyclonic rains sets in, therefore, south of 32° south latitude, the winter maximum precipitation is observed. In the north and north-west of Australia, in June, on the contrary, the most favorable weather occurs. It's hot during the day and cool at night. The air becomes dry, the sky is blue all the time. The water in the ocean is unusually clean and, even winter time resembles fresh milk – +25 - +26°С.

July in Australia is the peak of winter and is considered the coldest month of the year. It will be very cool in July in the capital of Australia – Canberra. During the day here, the average temperature is about +11°C, and at night, on average, about +7°C, although sometimes the thermometer can show sub-zero temperatures. In the mountains near Canberra, winter is cold and snowy, with weather changing quickly and unpredictably. For those who want to sunbathe and swim in the middle of the Australian winter, it is better to go to the north of the country, to Darwin, where the air temperature reaches +29°C, and the water will delight you with a “chic” +26°C.

The east coast of Australia, in July, is more reminiscent of the southern European climate. The average temperature in Brisbane is +18°C, in Sydney – +16°C, and there are even night frosts. There is little precipitation at this time. The water in the ocean does not warm up well, its average temperature in July is about +16 - +18°C. On the west coast, on the contrary, July is the rainiest month, for example, in Perth, it rains, on average, 17 days out of 30. The sea is quite cool - about +16°C, therefore, only daredevils swim at this time.

August is the last winter month in Australia. On the southern coast of the country, in August, during the day the thermometer shows an average of +17°C, the nights can be called cold, about +7°C. The water temperature is at its minimum of +16°C, and there is a lot of precipitation. In the north of the country, on the contrary, there is almost never any precipitation in August. In general, the northern coast of Australia, in winter, pleases with wonderful warm weather, in Darwin, during the day, on average, +31 ° C, in evening time the air temperature drops to a comfortable +20°C, and the water temperature is simply mind-blowing – +26 - +27°C.

A special climate has formed in the interior of Australia. It is hot and dry here in winter and very cold at night. In Alice Springs, the average daytime temperature in August is +22°C, dropping at night to +5 - +3°C, or sometimes even slightly negative temperatures.

At the beginning of September, spring comes to Australia, which combines the features of the other three seasons. In general, the spring climate is very similar to autumn: not too hot and not too cold. The thermometer everywhere begins to rise, and the sun shines even brighter, and the Australian continent begins to slowly bloom with bright colors.

Already in September, the eastern part of Australia warms up noticeably; during the day, in Sydney, it is about +20°C, and at night up to +10°C. The water here becomes warmer by a couple of degrees and is +18°C in September. In the southern part of Australia, in September, it is still cool, for example, in Melbourne, during daylight hours, the thermometer will show only +16°C, and in dark time day – about +6°С. In Adelaide it is a little warmer - during the day the air warms up to +17°C, but the nights are still cold, about +8°C.

The northern coast of Australia continues to delight with excellent weather - there is practically no rain here in September, and the daytime air temperature, for example, in Darwin is +32°C, in the evening it is quite comfortable temperature for walks, and +23°C remains at night. Despite the fact that this is the northern part of the continent, both day and night air temperatures here also rise, and what’s even nicer is that the water temperature rises at the same time, reaching a delightful +27°C in September.

October is mid-spring in Australia, and air and water temperatures everywhere continue to rise steadily. In the southern part of the country, in October, it often rains, the temperature is not high, for example, in Melbourne, during the day, about +18°C, and at night only +8°C. The water temperature near the coast has become a little higher, but is still quite cool - +18°C, it is still too early to swim. In western Australia, on the contrary, a dry and warm spring is observed. In Perth, daytime temperatures reach +22°C, although nights are still quite cool at +10°C. The water temperature off the coast is warmer than in Sydney and Melbourne, but noticeably colder than on the northern coast, and is only +19°C.

In the north of Australia, in October, there is grace. It is very warm and comfortable here, there is very little precipitation. During the day, in Darwin, the air temperature is +27 - +29°C, at night, about +23 - +24°C. The water off the northern coast continues to warm up and is +27 - +28°C.

Spring warmth quickly reaches the central regions of Australia, in Alice Springs, in October, during the day, it is already really hot, the air temperature warms up to +30 - +32°C, dropping to +15°C at night, precipitation at this time years are unlikely.

November is the last month of spring in Australia, spring is coming to an end and the Australian summer is very close. November is already a very warm month. Even in “cold” Canberra, in November, it is very comfortable - the daytime air temperature rises to +22 - +23°C, dropping to +15°C at night. The east coast of the country also enjoys excellent weather - for example, in Sydney in November there is not as much rainfall as in the summer, and the daytime air temperature is +23 - +24°C. At the same time, the water off the coast warms up to +21°C, so you can already swim!

In the west of Australia it is traditionally warmer than in the east; during the day in Perth, in November, the daytime air temperature will be +25°C, however, the nights here are noticeably colder, and the thermometer often drops to a temperature of +12°C. In November, there is no precipitation on the west coast of Australia, and the water temperature warms up to +21°C. The central regions of the country are extremely hot, in Alice Springs the daytime air temperature in November is +33 - +35°C, in desert areas it is even much higher. But daily fluctuations make themselves felt both in spring and at night, the temperature drops exactly 2 times, thus averaging +16 - +17°C.

Australia is an arid, arid continent. About 40% of its area receives less than 250 mm of precipitation per year, and about 70% receives less than 500 mm per year. Much of Australia may not experience significant rainfall for several years in a row. The driest area is around Lake Eyre, in South Australia, which receives less than 125mm of rainfall annually. Drought is widespread in many inland areas of Australia. Australia's wettest region is near the Tully region of Queensland, where wet air rises above the eastern slope of the Atherton Plateau - up to 4,500 mm of precipitation falls here per year.

The northern and northeastern parts of the continent are characterized by a large amount of precipitation - up to 1,500 mm, and in some places more than 2,000 mm, which falls mainly in the summer. In winter, during the dry period of the year, rain falls only sporadically. The entire area of the coastal plains and eastern slopes of the Great Dividing Range is also well moistened, with an average of 1,000 to 1,500 mm of precipitation falling here.

The central and western parts of Australia receive, on average, 250 - 300 mm of rainfall per year. Some of the water that falls here quickly and deeply seeps through the permeable soil and becomes inaccessible to plants, and some evaporates under the hot rays of the sun.

When to go to Australia. Australia is a year-round country to visit; at any time of the year you can choose one or another corner where the weather will be simply gorgeous. The main thing is not to make a mistake with this choice.

If you are planning to visit major cities in Australia, such as Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane or go on a sightseeing tour, the best months The months for travel will be September, October and November (Australian spring), as well as March, April and May (Australian autumn). In the summer months it will be uncomfortable here due to the heat; the winter months will please few people with their coolness.

For lovers beach holiday, and for those who want to roast bones at the famous resorts of Queensland, as well as plunge into the underwater kingdom of the magnificent Great Barrier Reef, the months from December to March (Australian summer) are more suitable. The summer months are also an ideal choice for both surfing and duffering enthusiasts. In winter (June, July, August) it will be quite cool here; the beach season is excluded at this time; in the remaining months there is quite a lot of rainfall.

Beach fun will be very pleasant on the southern coast of Australia (Adelaide, Albany), as well as on the west coast of the country - since the climate here is cooler than in the north, the ideal time for relaxation will, again, be the summer months (December, January February). The rest of the year it is cooler here, and in winter (June, July, August) beach holidays are completely eliminated.

If you are planning to visit magnificent Melbourne, then it is also better to go there in the summer (December, January, February). In addition, in the summer, walks and excursion tours in the parks and reserves of Tasmania will be amazing - there’s simply no better time for this, since many National parks Only open in season from December to March. In winter (June, July, August) Melbourne and Tasmania are quite cool, and at other times of the year it often rains.

To visit the central regions of the country, such as Alice Springs, Ayers Rock, as well as the desert areas of Australia, the winter months (June, July, August) are suitable, when the stifling heat subsides a little, but it is always worth remembering that the weather is hot during the day it absolutely guarantees cold in the evening, and often frosts at night. When going on a trip, keep in mind such a large temperature difference and take warm clothes with you. You should not go to these areas in the summer months (December, January, February), the temperature is +40°C in the shade, few people will like it, and it will complicate your travel and sightseeing. It is strictly not recommended for people who cannot tolerate the heat to go to these desert areas in the summer!!! It's simply dangerous to your health!

The cooler months - from June to September (Australian winter) can be spent comfortably on the northern coast of the continent. Here, at this time, the weather is perfect for a beach holiday, rain is practically excluded, and the water resembles fresh milk. But in the summer (December, January, February), it is better to refrain from traveling to this part of Australia - heavy rains will not allow you to enjoy the amazing nature of this country.

Earth. In addition, it also holds the title of the hottest and driest. Most of the continent lacks moisture, so there are a lot of deserts and semi-deserts, especially in its central regions. Australia's climate is very interesting to study and incredibly diverse. Today we will look at what climatic zones Australia is located in and what natural zones it is represented by.

General information about the continent

Australia is a continent of contrasts. It is located entirely in the Southern Hemisphere. In winter, when we have frost and snow, it is hot there, but in summer the temperature, on the contrary, decreases. In Australia, kangaroo meat is eaten instead of lamb and beef. Despite the arid climate, there is more snow in the mountains than in all of Switzerland. It is known that indigenous Australians are descendants of prisoners, but at the genetic level this did not affect them in any way. This country is one of the most law-abiding.

The territory of the continent is 7,692,024 km². Population - 24.13 million (as of 2016). The capital of the state of the same name is Canberra. In addition, major cities are Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth. So, in what climatic zones is mainland Australia located and what is the definition of the term “climate”?

Climate of Australia

Climate is the weather regime characteristic of a given area. Climatic conditions in certain areas have not changed for decades, although recently global climate change has been observed throughout the world.

Climatic zones influence all natural factors:

1. Wind and precipitation destroy landforms.

2. Soil in warm and humid climate more fertile than in cold conditions.

3. Flora and fauna. The warmer the climate, the more species of plants and animals live in the area.

The climate of the area, in turn, is influenced by latitude, distance from the equator (the farther, the colder), and altitude above sea level. In this case, every 1000 m in height reduces the temperature by an average of 7 degrees Celsius. This is why even in tropical high mountain areas it is very cold.

What climate zones is Australia located in?

Main climate types:

  • subequatorial (in the north);
  • tropical (south of the continent);
  • subtropical (Central Australia).

The island of Tasmania can also be included in the list as it is an Australian state. The climate here is temperate. Now let's look at each of them in more detail.

Subequatorial belt of Australia

The subtropical climate that dominates the south of the country is characterized by changes in air masses. In summer, the subtropics are influenced by tropical air masses, and in winter - by temperate air masses. Summers are sunny, and winters are moderately cold and rainy.

The subequatorial zone is characterized by a large amount of precipitation and fairly cold temperatures: +23...+24 °C. However, it fluctuates slightly throughout the year. This type of climate is in the north and northeast of Australia. Precipitation is brought here by the monsoon (a steady wind that periodically changes direction) in the summer - from December to February. Sometimes they are so abundant that they exceed 2000 millimeters. But in winter, in June - August, clear, dry weather sets in, sometimes even turning into drought.

The northern part of Australia is represented mainly by savannas and woodlands, with many deserts. The largest of them are Big Sandy, Big Victoria, Simpson. Vegetation cover depends on the duration and abundance of rain. Kangaroos, koalas, wombats, and crocodiles are found here. Eastern regions rich in ficus, ferns, eucalyptus, palm trees. Tropical rainforests grow in the east. The area is sparsely populated. Agriculture is undeveloped due to unsuitable climatic conditions.

Subtropical climate of Australia

What climate zones is Australia located in in the south? There is only one subtropical zone, but it is divided into 3 types.

Continental - characteristic of the southern part of the mainland, but extends further east, through the outskirts of Adelaide, into the western regions of New South Wales. It is characterized by low rainfall and significant seasonal temperature fluctuations. Summer is dry and hot, winter is cold. The annual precipitation is 500-600 mm. The territory is predominantly desert due to its remoteness inland.

The Mediterranean type of climate in Australia is characteristic of the southwest of the continent. In summer the temperature reaches +23...+27 °C, and in winter it drops to +12...+14 °C. The amount of precipitation is small - 500-600 mm per year. It is the southwestern and southeastern coasts that are most populated.

Wet sub tropical climate in the southeast it is characterized by a moderate increase in temperature - about +22 °C. In winter +6...+8 °C. The amount of precipitation sometimes exceeds 2000 mm per year.

Tropical climate of Australia

What climate zone is Central Australia located in? Subtropical and subequatorial climate reigns only in the extreme regions of the mainland, while the tropical climate dominates almost all of Australia. It is divided into wet and dry.

A humid tropical climate is characteristic of the extreme eastern part of the continent. The wind brings air masses saturated with moisture, from the Pacific Ocean. On average, about 1500 mm of precipitation falls here, so this area is well hydrated. The climate is mild, the temperature in summer rises to +22 °C, and in winter it does not fall below +11 °C.

A tropical dry climate is typical for most of the continent. The central and western regions of Australia are occupied by deserts and semi-deserts. They stretch for almost 2.5 thousand km from the shores of the Indian Ocean to the Great Dividing Range.

Summer temperatures in these arid areas sometimes exceed +30 °C. In winter it drops to +10...+15 °C. And the hottest region of the continent is the Great Sandy Desert in northwestern Australia. Almost all summer the temperature here exceeds +35 °C, and in winter it drops only to +20 °C.

In the center of the mainland, in the city of Alice Springs, the thermometer can rise to +45°C. It is one of the richest and most beautiful cities in Australia, and the second most populous. Moreover, it is 1500 km away from the nearest populated area.

When discussing the climatic zones and climate types of Australia, we will not lose sight of the weather conditions on the island of Tasmania. The climate here is temperate, with temperatures in winter and summer usually varying within 10 degrees. The average temperature in summer is +17 °C, and in winter it drops to +8 °C.

These are the climate zones in which Australia is located: subequatorial, tropical and subtropical.

Australian waters

Climate has a significant influence on Australia's waters and land. 60% of the continent does not drain into the ocean; there are very few rivers and lakes here. Most of the rivers belong to the Indian Ocean basin. These streams are shallow and often dry up in the heat. Almost all lakes are deep waterless pits. The rivers of the Pacific Ocean, on the contrary, are full-flowing, since these areas receive a lot of precipitation. Alas, most of the continent lacks moisture.

Australia is rich in artesian springs that lie at great depths. The water in most of them is slightly salty. Therefore, their use on the farm is limited.

Australia is known for blue skies and bright sunshine, with a mild climate without extreme temperature fluctuations. The continent is divided into two climatic zones. About 40% of the north of the country is in the tropical zone, and 60% of the southern part is in the temperate climate zone.

Seasons

The tropical zone has two distinct seasons: Green/Wet (summer) and Dry/Warm (winter). The temperate zone has four seasons, but we must remember that they are opposite to the Northern Hemisphere:

Spring: September - November
Summer: December - February
Autumn: March - May
Winter: June – August

Australia's climate offers great opportunities for year-round recreation and travel. When planning tours, be aware that during the summer (December - February) the weather is hot and humid in north-west Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland. Perfect time The best time to visit these areas is the Australian winter and spring.

Winter in Australia
Winter in Australia is very different from winter in the northern hemisphere. A typical winter day in Sydney is between 16-22ºC. It's practically a spring day in London, Stockholm or Amsterdam. And the further north you move, the warmer and warmer it becomes!

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Average temperature in Sydney

Even though Sydney is on the southeast coast, it has a warm temperate climate.

Darwin climate

Dry season is the best time to travel to Darwin. It lasts from April/May to September/October and brings steady weather with clear blue skies, balmy mild nights and warm days.
Average temperature data
The table below shows average monthly temperature data processed at Darwin Airport between 1941 and 2009. Keep in mind that these are average figures, so they may differ slightly from those shown in the table.

It's important to remember that humidity during the wet season makes those same temperatures much more uncomfortable. During the dry season, add 7 - 10°C to the actual temperature and you get the heat load wet season.

May - August

From May to August is the main period tourist season. Most travelers visit the Kimberley during this period of time. All roads and attractions are open.

May. Lush greenery after the wet season, but rain is still possible. Lots of insects and very warm during the day. A great time to admire the deep waterfalls. May marks the beginning of the tourist season.

June July. Peak tourist season. Daily weather forecast in Kimberley: no precipitation. Clear blue skies are guaranteed daily.

August. Still a full tourist month. The nights are still cool, which makes it possible to sleep comfortably. The temperature of the day gradually increases and becomes comparable to May. Many of the waterfalls have dried up by this time, but the natural rock pools are still clear and great for swimming.

September - November

The time between September and November is what we call “pumping.” The weather is getting hotter and more humid. The day's tensions are released with spectacular thunderstorms in the afternoon.

September- time to travel if you can stand the heat. During this period, most tourists travel to cooler areas. There are few thunderstorms and they bring mainly thunder and light. Rains are becoming rare.

October. During this period, the earth looks scorched. The once clean ponds in the rocks are drying up and are practically invisible. The occasional intense and invigorating rain brings relief and sometimes replenishes dry water bodies. However, floods are possible already at this time.

November. In one word: cruel. It's hot , hot , hot month, by far the hottest month of the year. Even the nights are too stuffy and warm. Daily weather forecast for Kimberley at this time: heat, showers and thunderstorms. More frequent showers increase humidity (which makes high temperatures even more oppressive), but they do not bring temperatures down. Some non-paved roads may be closed after rain.

December - April

This is the classic wet season - the four wettest months. Unfortunately, precipitation is not distributed evenly. It may rain continuously for several days. However, floods caused by rainfall cannot be predicted.

December. Can be very wet, especially towards the end. There is quite a lot of precipitation and, most likely, most non-paved roads will be closed. However, the main highway remains open. The rain is still falling, mostly accompanied by thunderstorms. If the rains start early, the Kimberley could be transformed within days. Knee-high grass appears overnight, and wildflowers quickly bloom. This may be a magical time for nature to awaken, but it may also be very hot. If you are in the Kimberley during this period, you should know that excursion programs will not open until the end of January.

January February. Monsoon season and the wettest months of the year. The north of Western Australia is said to have the most unstable weather in the world at this time. Do you want to experience the full power of destructive winds? Then you should get to the Kimberley coast in January. This is the period when the risk of flooding and road closures is highest. The air temperature drops, but the humidity remains extreme.

March. Quite unpredictable and similar to December. The rains are decreasing, but one of the last cyclones may arrive. The Kimberley region is becoming so saturated with water that streams can turn into rivers before your eyes.

April. A turning point month when the wet season comes to an end. We breathe in the air and watch the winds. When southeasterly winds begin, it is usually a sign that the wet season is over. The biggest change in weather is when the rain stops. The day's temperature and humidity were still pretty much the same. It takes time for the ground and roads to dry out. However, some trails are becoming passable again and roads are opening. Tourists who visit the Kimberley at this time of year are quite the adventurous bunch.

Cairns Climate

Cairns has a tropical climate with hot and humid summers and milder winters. The average annual precipitation is 1992mm. and most of them fall during the summer between January and March.
The monsoon region comes close to Cairns between December and March and brings heat and moisture, as well as the possibility of thunderstorms and tropical cyclones.
The ideal time to visit Cairns is during the dry season from May to October. It should be borne in mind that the tropics have fairly uniform temperatures throughout the year. Typical daytime temperature ranges in Cairns are 23C – 31C in high summer and 18C – 26C in midwinter.
