Many modern phone users have not used watches for a long time, because the gadget is always at hand. It is important for them that the date and time are set correctly, since failures can lead to late awakening for work and constant delays. Therefore, every user needs to know how to set the time on an Android phone.

Incorrect time on the phone - why does this happen?

Even after setting the date and time very accurately, you may find the clock on the screen showing incorrect information. Before you enter new information, you need to understand why the time on your Android phone is lost. If you do not find the reason, then entering new data will be useless.

There are several situations when time is short Android phone Synchronization of date and time is lost. First of all, this happens if you decide to use network data. When traveling around your region or in populated areas located on the border of time zones, you may encounter that the time information is unexpectedly lost. In this case, it is enough to disable synchronization with the network in the date and time settings using the movable sliders.

Another reason why the time on your phone gets lost is a software glitch. This may be due to the installation of some personalization applications, such as new clock widgets. The only way to fix the problem is to reset the settings to factory settings. Before performing it, copy the necessary data.

How to set date and time?

After you have become familiar with the main causes of failures, you need to learn how to set the time on your smartphone. To do this, you just need to follow simple instructions:

  1. Go to the main menu, where all applications are collected.
  2. Among the icons, find the image of a gear, entitled “Settings”. Enter it.
  3. Among all the sections, you must select the one entitled “Date and Time”. In some versions of the operating system, this menu item is located in a larger directory - “Device”. Sometimes date and time settings can be hidden in the "Advanced Options" folder.
  4. Once you have found a location with the desired settings, you need to make changes to the current date and time values. You can immediately change the time zone and adjust the data display format.

There is no need to reboot the device; immediately after confirming with the “OK” button, the new data will begin to be displayed in widgets on the screen and in the status bar.

There is another way to change time settings

To do this, you can use the clock application, which manufacturers often place in the “Tools” folder. The algorithm of actions in this case is as follows:

  1. Go to the application.
  2. Go to its settings options. They are hidden behind three vertical dots or a gear icon.
  3. Select "Change date and time". It may also be titled “date and time settings.”
  4. Use the visual dial to change the current value.

The disadvantage of using the application is that you cannot change the display format or time zone.

What to do if the time on your phone is wrong?

If you are trying to set the necessary parameters, but they are reset, there may be several reasons:

  1. You have synchronized the time with the parameters set by the network. In this case, before making changes, you need to remove the marker or move the tab from the “Use network date and time” item. This can only be done through the system settings menu.
  2. A single software failure can be resolved by rebooting the device. If it does not help, then you need to completely reset the user settings.
  3. Defects in the device’s firmware appear from the first days of its use. You can replace it yourself software or contact the service center for help.
  4. The time zone set on your smartphone conflicts with the SIM card settings. In this case, it is worth changing the time zone to the one recommended by the network, and then setting the necessary parameters and disabling synchronization.

In some cases, to resolve the conflict between the settings of the smartphone and the SIM card, it is necessary to take more complex actions. First of all, you need to save the necessary files, remove the SIM card and reset the settings to factory settings. Only after this you need to disable synchronization with the network and set the desired date and time parameters.

Please note that resetting to factory settings on devices with open root access may destroy the custom firmware.

Using auto-sync time and date

If you want to have a gadget with the exact time at hand, then you need to use synchronization. There are two ways to get the exact time on the screen of your smartphone - use standard capabilities or use smart synchronization applications.

Regular auto-sync is enabled in the settings. You need to activate an item with one of the names:

  • automatic date and time;
  • use network date and time;
  • synchronize with the network.

But please note that after activating this option, you will not be able to manually change the date and time settings. This option is also not particularly accurate - the average error is about 500 milliseconds.

Smart time synchronization using your phone app

Smart synchronization is enabled using applications. To carry it out, it is necessary to interfere with the system settings, so such programs require “superuser” rights. They won't work without them. All smart sync apps have a similar interface. Let's look at the principle of managing them using ClockSync as an example. This application has won positive ratings from many users. You need to work with it according to the instructions:

  1. Download and launch the application.
  2. On the main screen you will see the current time set on your smartphone, as well as more exact value, delivered from a special server. Typically, the difference in data can be more than 20 seconds.
  3. Using the buttons at the bottom of the screen, call up the context menu (usually the icon of several wands or windows located on the right is used for this).
  4. Click on the “Synchronize” menu item.
  5. The application will ask you for root access. Allow him to change system settings using the “Grant” button.
  6. After synchronization, there should be no discrepancies in the data on the main screen - the third line should contain the value “0”.

If you have regular firmware that does not provide superuser rights, you must change its settings before using the application. To do this, call the context menu and select “Settings”. The very first line in it will be to enable mode without. Place a marker next to this line.

How to place a clock on the home screen?

Now let's figure out how to set the time on the phone screen. Reading it from the status bar is not always convenient, so you need to display a large and convenient image on the desktop.

Almost all smartphones have a clock widget on the main desktop. If it was accidentally deleted, you need to return it:

  1. Open the desktop of your smartphone. Find a place on it that is free from shortcuts and widgets and press and hold it with your finger for a long time.
  2. A screen menu will appear in front of you. You need to select the “Applications and Widgets” item.
  3. Of the two tabs, select the one entitled “Widgets”. You will see several options for sketches of visual additions. Find a watch among them.
  4. Touch and hold the clock image with your finger. The desktops of your smartphone will appear in front of you, and with a movement of your finger you can move the visual module to any of them.
Beautiful clock widgets for Android

To change the data displayed by the installed module, use the instructions on how to set the time on your watch or phone. Children's widgets, as well as unusually designed clocks, by default in operating system No. To change the visual design of this module, you can download one of the applications:

  • "Transparent Clocks and Weather";
  • Sense Flip Clock & Weather;
  • Sense V2 Flip Clock & Weather;
  • Retro Clock Widget;
  • DIGI Clock.

In you can find other applications with a wider range of modules.

You can also display a clock widget on the lock screen. To do this, you need to go to the system settings, select “Screen” from them, and then stop at the “Lock” item. In it you need to choose the option “Display time and date on the screen”. Here you can also enable the use of widgets, and then personalize the “curtain” using a standard or pre-downloaded utility.

Now you know how to set the time on your phone. Share the information you receive with your friends. If you or your loved ones have problems setting the date and time, and you could not solve it yourself, ask questions in the comments.

The question of how to change the date in Android is usually quickly resolved through the settings, but sometimes it is not possible to set the correct time the first time: the value is constantly confused or displayed incorrectly on the tablet or phone.

It doesn’t matter what version of Android and what shell is installed on your tablet or phone, you can set the date and time using one algorithm.

  1. Open the Android main menu. Go to Settings.
  2. Go to the "Date and Time" section.
  3. Pay attention to the auto-tuning options. If the date and time are determined over the network, but you see incorrect values, connect to the Internet, disable the auto-tuning option by selecting “Disable”, and then enable it again.

If after the update the time is still displayed incorrectly, disable auto-tuning by unchecking the use of network data checkboxes and set the values manually. The corresponding items will become available for making changes immediately after the automatic settings are deactivated.

To set the date and time, open the items of the same name one by one. Move the numbers up and down to change the set value, and then click Done to save.

The time zone is configured in the same way. You can enable its detection over the network or change it manually. You can also customize the date and time display format on your tablet or phone. The time can be shown in 12-hour or 24-hour format, and the date can be shown in in different order date, month and year.

Why does time go wrong?

Typically, the time on Android is adjusted automatically after installing the SIM card and turning on the device. But why does it periodically fail on a tablet or phone if the system has enough tools to constantly check and maintain correct value? The phone does not have a CMOS battery, which is responsible for storing correct date and time on the computer. Therefore there can be two reasons:

  1. Using Auto-Tune.
  2. The difference between the operator's time zone and the time zone on the tablet or phone.

How to disable automatic determination of date and time over the network on Android is described above. But if after carrying out these manipulations the time is still lost, try using the following algorithm:

  1. Turn off the device, remove the SIM card.
  2. Turn on the device, go to settings. Open the “Date and Time” section, disable automatic time zone detection.
  3. Set the correct time zone and apply the changes.
  4. Turn off the phone, insert the SIM card.

If you can’t change anything this way, and the screen still displays incorrect values, try . The procedure will be similar, only after removing the SIM you must first reset the settings, and only then manually set the time zone.

Problems with time and time zones in Android and ways to solve them

  • System administration
  • Tutorial

Let's say you've been using Android for a long time, and therefore it may seem that it copes perfectly with time synchronization tasks - alarms go off on time, there are no obvious time deviations, etc. However, are you completely sure where Android comes from? actually receives data about the exact time and time zones? If you have any doubts about how this works, welcome to cat.

Android has two problems with time: its unpredictable synchronization and the need to update time zone data even in the latest version of the OS.

Background: Android is a mobile OS based on the Linux kernel, it easily connects to the Internet and, of course, one can assume that time synchronization is carried out using NTP, however, this is not the case. Historically, Android was intended to be used exclusively on mobile phones (think version 1.6). At the same time, only by the 3rd major version did it acquire an interface for tablets and other progress began towards unifying the interface and OS hardware. However, even versions 4.4 and Android L receive time signals using the same methods that Nokia 3310 and other earlier GSM/3GPP phones received them, i.e. from towers cellular communications when registering on the network (when connecting to a tower). At the same time, tablets or other devices without a communication module, in principle, do not have the ability to synchronize time automatically.

Unfortunately, to teach Android to synchronize time completely automatically using NTP we need root access because there is currently no API for accurately setting the time in Android.

Let's get started. The first thing you need to do is turn off time synchronization with the mobile network. At the same time, I recommend leaving the time zone setting in automatic mode, and turning it off only if there is a guarantee that the device will operate in stationary mode.

Screenshot of the settings window “Settings -> Date and time” Android versions 4.x:

Next, you need to install the ClockSync application, which will act as an alternative to the time synchronization daemon using NTP.

Screenshots of the ClockSync program window before synchronization (left) and after (right):

The screenshots show that the difference with the exact time turned out to be quite small, however, there are different situations, for some the time on the device can even float back and forth because the operator did not bother to put things in order on his BS.

After making sure that everything works, we’ll set up automatic synchronization in the ClockSync program. To improve accuracy, I recommend enabling the “High Accuracy Mode” and “Only via WI-FI” options. If everything is clear with the first option from the description in the program (see screenshot below), then I recommend enabling the second option primarily not for reasons of saving mobile traffic, but because Mobile Internet is not able to guarantee any stable delays.

A little more about accuracy:

The still widespread mobile Internet of the 2nd (GPRS/EDGE) is, in principle, unable to provide stable transmission delays. Even the Internet of the 3rd (3G) and, to some extent, 4th (LTE/LTE-advanced) generations, when the network or communication channels between BS are heavily loaded, which is a typical situation for large populated areas, cannot guarantee stable delays. Therefore, even with approximation, the final accuracy of time setting can be worse than a fraction of a second and can even easily reach several seconds.

Screenshot of automatic synchronization settings in ClockSync:

In connection with large-scale changes in time zones in the Russian Federation in the fall of this year, it is necessary now to think about updating information about them on all devices, and if there are no problems with supported desktop OSes, then in Android even the latest version of the OS contains outdated data. To make sure of this, install TimeZone Fixer and observe an unsightly picture.

A screenshot of the TimeZone Fixer program running on Android 4.4.4 (Cyanogenmod firmware dated August 4, 2014), which clearly shows that the data in the firmware is out of date:

A little bit of common sense and concern for users:

The author of the TimeZone Fixer program warns us that updating time zone data files can completely “break” the device and even gives recommendations on how to protect yourself from additional problems, although the cases of problems are isolated and very specific - this is really good care for ordinary users.

That’s the only reason I included this piece in the article; although it is not directly related to the problem, it is really good example care about users. At the same time, the warning about versions 4.3+ is caused by only a small number of reviews about the program for devices with new OS versions, so please be sure to write a review about this application after use.

After updating the time zone data, the program will offer to reboot, however, I recommend rebooting the device yourself through the system menu since the program performs a reboot that is actually equivalent to a reset, which, although with a low probability, can lead to problems and data loss.

I will be happy to answer any questions or make additions that the community deems necessary, however, I would like to avoid overloading the article with additional information in order to adhere to the format of a compact guide to solving a specific problem.

UPD: This instruction completely solves the problem of time zones only for versions younger than 4.4. From version 4.4, additional patching is needed, while the issue is at the stage of exploring the possibilities for creating a user-friendly solution.

Beginner users of modern smartphones often wonder: how to set the time and date on Android?

But, as a rule, answering this question does not require any special knowledge, since this can be done easily and simply, especially if this is not the first time you have held a gadget in your hands. So, how to change the date on an Android phone?

Manual setting

In order to manually set the date on Android, you do not need the knowledge of a super owner of a gadget of this platform, special skills for smartphones based on Android, and so on. All you need is a smartphone. Since Android is the simplest platform, finding settings on your phone is as easy as shelling pears. Typically, the settings menu can be called up by pressing the touch buttons or found in the menu.

In general, manual setup on Android is necessary for those users who do not have Internet access. It is when the device is disconnected from the network that the indicators on the smartphone are lost and it must be set manually. So, how to change the date in the Galaxy S Plus, for example, or in any other smartphone on the Android platform? There are two methods for this:

  1. Lower the notification shade and find the gear icon in the upper right corner.
  2. We go to the main menu of the smartphone and find there the same sign with the inscription Settings.

Next you need to find a section called date and time. Now you need to pay attention to the presence of a SIM card in your phone or tablet. If it is not there, then automatic synchronization is simply impossible. If you want to set the time on your tablet accurately to the second, you need to uncheck the box Automatic time detection. Only after this will you be able to set the correct indicators on your smartphone.

So, next we need to find a line called Set date, then click on OK. The time is set in exactly the same way, so we will not describe in detail the stages of setting the time. But in some cases there is still Automatic belt detection, so the checkbox from this line must also be unchecked in order to set the correct time.

And just like with the time zone that our compatriots play around with, the authorities are playing with time display options. That is, a 12-hour format option or 24. You can also change it by unchecking auto-detection and selecting the option that you need. On some Android models, you can also select time display options. As a rule, most often on the home and lock screen the date is shown as day/month/year. But you can always change the way it is shown by going to the settings and changing it in the same way as changing the time.

Automatic setup

This method is much easier than the previous one, but it requires a SIM card and a mobile Internet network.

If both factors are present, the indicators are set automatically after turning on the device.

You just need to confirm whether the indicators are set correctly when you start the smartphone.

In order for the time to be set automatically, you will need to go to the settings (the methods for getting to this item are described above) and check the box Auto detection.

Often, after the automatic time detection value is active, access to changing these settings manually is blocked.

Therefore, which method to choose - automatic or manual - is up to you.

Smart Sync

To set the most accurate time, you will need another application. One of the popular ones is the application ClockSync, which was developed Sergey Baranov. In terms of size, of course, the program looks modest. But how many functions does it include? Let's list them:

  • Automatic time setting with or without root rights.
  • Highest precision mode.
  • Detailed statistics.
  • Setting the correct and most accurate time interval.
  • Option to update about all available time zones.
  • Selecting one or another server for time synchronization.
  • Auto-detection of a particular time zone.
  • Battery saving mode.
  • Time zone database (this item is especially important for older tablets and smartphones).

Summing up

If for one reason or another the date or time on your smartphone is incorrect, then you can set the correct one at any time using manual or automatic settings, as well as by installing the program described above. On newer devices, the date and time are rarely lost even after rebooting the gadget. But older devices still fail, and because of this, the date and time may be lost.

And also, if the date and time on the photo of the Android phone is incorrect, then the corresponding indicator will be displayed when taking a photo. The display of time on photos can also be turned off in the settings, but not in the main settings. To do this, you will need to turn on the camera and adjust the display from there. But if for some reason this cannot be done, then we recommend that you download the date and time on Android using some third-party applications.

Setting time and date on Android

Instructions

On a Series 40 platform device, first press the one of the sub-screen keys above which the word “Menu” is displayed on the display. If it is not shown above any of them, press the middle joystick button. Find the “Date and Time” item in the menu structure. Its location depends on the device model, for example: “Settings” - “Options” - “General” - “Date and time”.

To change the value of any input field, move the pointer to it, and then press the middle joystick button. Enter a new value using the keyboard, and then press the one of the sub-screen keys that corresponds to saving the information (its name depends on the phone model).

If the Automatic Time Update field is set to On, the phone's clock will automatically sync with the base station's clock. Despite the cancellation of the transition to winter time, some of these stations are still configured in the old way, so an error of one hour is possible. But the minute readings will always be very accurate - so much so that periodic adjustments will not be required at all.

On phones running the Symbian operating system, set the date and time in the same way. The only difference is the way the menu is called up. Instead of one of the sub-screen keys or the middle joystick button, use a separate key for this, which depicts a solid circle and a hollow square connected by two arcs.

Method for setting date and time in all phones on the platform Windows Phone 7, including the Nokia Lumia series, is unified. First, scroll down your desktop to the tab where the Settings icon is located. It looks like a white gear on a red background. A menu will appear. Select the “Date + time” item in it. Change the desired settings. To enable or disable automatic synchronization, respectively, check or uncheck the “Installed automatically” checkbox.
