There once lived in Macedonia near Edessa two pious men Gury and Samon. Secluded with his followers Christian faith far from the city, where lawlessness and debauchery reigned, virtuous men served the Lord, striving to acquire the grace of the Holy Spirit. This happened under the wicked emperors Diocletian (284-305) and Maximian (305-311), who persecuted the Christian Church.

Having heard that certain men were preaching Christianity and converting pagans to their faith, the wicked imprisoned the confessors of Christ along with their followers.

However, not risking angering the people, all prisoners were released after punishment by beating, except for Gury and Samon, since they were teachers and inspirers Christian life and many were weaned from idolatry. Refusing to sacrifice to idols, Gury and Samon accepted martyrdom and were beheaded with a sword.

At the same time, Deacon Aviv lived in Edessa, where the martyrs Gury and Samon suffered. He went from house to house and preached the teachings of Christ. Aviv called believers to perseverance in faith and courage, and called unbelievers to repentance and acceptance of Christ.

The emperor, who began the persecution of Christians, ordered the capture of Aviva for the spread of Christian doctrine. But he himself came to his destroyer and was burned. His body remained unharmed after burning.

During the siege of Edessa by the wicked barbarian people, the Greek kings sent their soldiers to help the city, who remained in it until its complete liberation. One of the warriors, a Goth by origin (a representative of the German people), settled in the house of a pious widow named Sophia. A beautiful daughter, Euphemia, grew up in Sofia’s family. She grew up away from people to the delight of her mother. But she accidentally caught the eye of a barbarian tenant. He began by hook or by crook to persuade Sofia to give his daughter to him as his wife. But the pious and wise Sophia did not agree, despite false admonitions, gifts and direct threats. In the end, the Goth managed to convince Sofia of the sincerity and decency of his intentions. Sophia ordered him to come with her and Euphemia to the grave of the martyrs Guria, Samon and Aviv, and there to swear that he had no wife and children in his homeland, and that he would take care of Euphemia far from her home and love her all her life. as befits a husband. The Goth swore, lying. In fact, in hometown his family was waiting for him.

After the liberation of Edessa, the Goth took the pregnant Euphemia to his homeland, where absolute hell awaited the girl. She became the slave of his wife, who was terribly jealous of her husband for Euphemia. And when the baby was born, the Goth's distraught wife simply poisoned him.

Euphemia, mourning her son, noticed that liquid was leaking from the child’s mouth. Having wet the baby’s mouth with a piece of wool, Euphemia hid the wool with herself. During a feast, where she served at the table, Euphemia dipped this piece of wool into the cup of her baby's killer. That night the Goth's wife died. The wife's relatives, in the spirit of their barbaric traditions, decided to bury the beautiful Euphemia alive and placed her in a coffin next to the body of the deceased who had already begun to decompose. Here Euphemia called on the Lord and the martyrs in His name Guria Samon and Aviv, asking fervently for intercession before the barbarians and rapists. Then the girl fell asleep from exhaustion. And a miracle happened. Three bright men appeared in front of her and promised to save her.

What happened next is completely beyond the understanding of the human mind. Euphemia's body was miraculously transported to the city of Edessa to the chapel of the three martyrs, where she woke up. Euphemia appeared safe and sound before her grieving mother.

Soon the oathbreaker was again sent to Edessa on business. But then retribution for his vile deeds awaited him. The Goth was executed by order of the ruler of the city.

There are many sad pages in the history of Christianity, one of them is the persecution to which believers have been subjected since the 3rd century. The three saints were not spared this fate. In the city of Edessa, at the end of the third century, two preachers were arrested - Samon and Guria. Two friends could have been saved if they had renounced their faith and made a sacrifice to the pagan gods, but they were faithful to the Lord. Then they were sentenced to monstrous torture: they were tortured, left in small cages, hung by their hands with a boulder tied to their feet. The friends withstood all the trials steadfastly, with prayer on their lips and faith in their hearts. After severe torture, they were publicly executed in the square and beheaded.

In the first half of the 4th century, under a different ruler, persecution did not stop. A preacher of the Christian faith named Aviv himself appeared before the emperor, a search was conducted for him, and the cleric did not want other people to be harmed through his fault. Like all other Christians, he was asked to renounce his faith, but Aviv did not refuse. Then they gave the order to burn the cleric at the stake. The preacher's friends and his mother were present at the execution. The flames flared up quickly, engulfing Aviva, and when the fire died down, his body was found untouched but lifeless. The saint's body was buried along with the martyrs Gury and Samon.

A long time ago, a Goth warrior from a Germanic tribe served in Edessa. There he liked Euphemia, the girl lived righteously with her mother. At the grave of the martyrs, a man asked the girl to marry him, promised to take care of her, love and honor her. When the time came to return, the warrior took the girl with him. It turned out that his wife was already waiting for him at home, and Euphemia turned into a slave. The girl was tortured and humiliated, and when she gave birth to a child, the Goth's wife poisoned the baby. Inconsolable Euphemia began to pray to Saints Guria, Samon and Aviv for intercession. They did not leave her, because they witnessed the Goth’s false oath. The Lord returned the poor girl to her mother's house in Edessa. When, after a while, the deceitful warrior arrived there again, Euphemia and her mother told everyone about his crime, for which the city ruler ordered the man to be executed.

The story of the descent into the host of saints

Tradition places these martyrs in the first centuries after the miraculous Christ's Resurrection. The holy righteous Gury, Samon and Aviv lived at a time when the pagan and bloody emperor Diocletian declared a great persecution of Christian confessors. High-ranking adherents of pagan atheism could not allow Christ's faith walked through their lands. They saw danger in the Risen God and for many years punished the early Christians with severe executions, trying to break their will and turn them away from the true Lord.

The future holy martyrs Gury and Samon were ordinary laymen who were imbued with God's Spirit of the faith of Christ and accepted it into their hearts. Warned of the beginning of great persecution against the followers of Christ, they tried to leave Edessa, the city in which they lived. However, they were unable to hide far - they were captured and subjected to terrible trials.

As a condition for release, the tormentors demanded a sacrifice to pagan pseudo-gods, but such a sin was unacceptable. Then the enraged persecutors subjected them to inhuman torture - they were hung on hind legs, bundles of stones were attached to their feet, they were beaten and tortured. Nothing forced Christians strong in faith to reject God, only prayers to Heaven ascended from the lips of Guria and Samon.

Locked in a cramped prison, but not broken in their will, the saints did not renounce the chosen path of the righteous, for which they drank the cup of martyrdom to the end - they were executed. On a dark night they were beheaded in the main city square, and already in the afternoon their bodies were respectfully buried by their brothers in Christ. This event occurred between 300 and 306 years.

The path to God: from confessor to saints

A few years later, Emperor Licinius repeated the horror of bloodshed of those who chose the faith of Christ. The Edessa deacon Aviv himself came to the torturers in order to take the executioners away from his flock. The confessor did not renounce the One God, but remained faithful to him with all his soul. The very offer given to Aviva - to receive forgiveness at the cost of sacrifice to the demonic gods - was rejected with anger and contempt. For which, of course, he was sentenced to a terrible execution - burning alive.

Aviv himself, without violence, entered the flames and gave his soul to the Almighty for eternal service.
