I work for a large international trading company, so I often have to travel to Vienna on business. And every time I discover something new, beautiful and amazing in the capital of Austria. The month of November (one of my last business trips) was no exception in this regard. It seemed to me that at this time of year the atmosphere in Vienna becomes even more aristocratic, the city takes on more austere and sophisticated features.

What you need to be prepared for in Vienna in November: weather conditions

In November, I was greeted with not particularly welcoming and warm weather. On the contrary, in my opinion, this time of year is not very conducive to long walks. After all, during the day the air temperature managed to warm up to + 8 - + 14 degrees. And in the evening and at night it became even colder: + 6 - + 8 degrees. There was practically no wind on some days, but on others it felt quite good. Given this, I was glad that I took a coat and a warm shawl from home. However, I still had to buy gloves in a small store near the Hofburg for 25 euros. In addition, November in Vienna is also a fairly rainy month. So, during the 10 days I was there, it rained for 5 days. Therefore, I concluded that shoes with good soles and an umbrella are a must have for everyone who wants to visit the capital of Austria this month. Although, on the other hand, such weather gave me the opportunity to appreciate the old Viennese cafes in the area of Town Hall Square, where I often took refuge from inclement weather with a cup of aromatic coffee and delicious apple strudel. In addition, I finally got to the Albertina Gallery and looked at the paintings of outstanding artists, which I always wanted to do, but did not have enough time. . I was able to see Vienna from the inside, communicate with local residents, visit exhibitions, museum displays, and feel the true aristocratic atmosphere of this delightful city.

Holidays and festivals in Vienna in November

St. Martin's Day

On November 11, all residents of Austria, and, accordingly, Vienna, celebrate the feast of St. Martin (or Martiniganzel). Since my business trip also included this number, I was able to participate in this interesting event. As local residents told me, almost all families, restaurants and cafes prepare a special holiday dish– goose with red cabbage, potato dumplings and chestnuts. My Austrian colleagues and I booked a table in advance at the Leupold restaurant not far from the well-known Ringstrasse street, where I was able to try this delicacy. Afterwards, also according to another tradition of this holiday, we went to try new wine in heurigers (these are small home-style restaurants located on the outskirts of Vienna).

The beginning of the Christmas market

In mid-November, the Christmas market begins in Vienna, which is located on the Town Hall Square. Therefore, even in November, I managed to feel the spirit of Christmas, saw a stunningly beautiful, elegant Christmas tree, a huge wreath of fir branches, and was also able to buy original Christmas tree decorations, colorful garlands, sweets and gifts for my family and friends in several pavilions of the fair.

Tourist saturation in Vienna in November

As I was able to notice, thanks to frequent trips to the capital of Austria, November is one of the least attractive months for tourists to visit Vienna. Of course, there are always those who want to, because this city is indeed very majestic, beautiful and worthy of attention, but not on such a large scale as in the summer or during the Christmas holidays. Therefore, there are usually never any problems with hotel accommodation and plane tickets. However, I can say own experience: Booking early will help you save a good amount of money.

The Viennese waltz still sounds, and the splendor of the architecture is impressive. The city lives a measured life, fueled by drizzling rains, combed by the November wind. The flow of tourists at this time is significantly reduced, the city rests after the summer and the first months of autumn, so that in December in all its Christmas splendor it can meet thousands of tourists who want to see New Year's tale. This is how mysterious and sometimes peaceful Vienna is in November.

Holidays in Vienna in November: weighing the pros and cons

Reviews of holidays in Vienna in November are based, rather, not on impressions of the city itself, but on reviews of the weather. At this time, it is not very comfortable here due to drizzling rains, temperatures approaching zero, and completely unfriendly winds. However, there is always a way out if the trip was planned and took place: you can hide from the wind and rain in cozy restaurants and cafes, and the doors of museums are always open for curious visitors and never cease to delight with their exhibitions.

The capital of Austria is beautiful at any time, and even a trip to Vienna in November has its own certain advantages:

  • If this is not your first trip to Vienna, and you have already taken walks in the city’s parks, it’s time to wait out the bad weather at museums, exhibitions and other cultural events, especially since the queues this month are small or completely absent;
  • many cozy cafes will gladly warm you up in bad weather with a cup of delicate Viennese melange and offer you to taste unforgettable Viennese desserts;
  • prices for tours, flights and accommodation are falling, there is no fuss on the city streets, so it’s time to arrange a leisurely budget educational holiday and explore the capital of Austria in literally from the inside;
  • over the past 5 - 7 years in November, almost anomalous warm weather with a temperature of +15°C - +20°C. So there is every chance of catching a late Indian summer in Vienna.

Minuses The November trip also has some and they are, of course, related to the weather:

  • There is no escape from the time of year and the cold drizzling autumn rains. Be sure to pack a raincoat, umbrella and waterproof shoes in your suitcase;
  • wind and air temperature of about +5°C also do not add advantages to a trip in November, especially if you are traveling with kids. To prevent the weather from ruining your vacation, stock up on warm clothes, especially at the end of the month when sub-zero temperatures and wet snow occur.

Usually the weather in November-December is cool, closer to winter, with wind and rain. But it’s impossible to say definitively about the weather this month: some days are fine and sunny, and some are rainy and cool.
