Friends, let me tell you in this review about one of my favorite beaches in Phuket - Mai Khao Beach. Why is he so good? Everything is very simple. Mai Khao is one of the most deserted beaches on the island with an impressive length of more than 10 kilometers! "And it's all?" - you ask, not yet understanding at all how difficult it is to find a deserted beach in Phuket at the height of the season. 🙂 But in fact, that’s not all. Mai Khao is also the beach where planes land! An incredible sight, for which you can already break away from your home and rush almost to the very north of Phuket. 🙂

The beach is located on the west coast of northern Phuket, far beyond Patong and neighboring Nai Yang Beach to the south. Mai Khao occupies a line with a length of not less than 10 kilometers, almost all the way to the bridge connecting Phuket with the mainland.

Well, now let's take a closer look at the beach. You can get directly to the beach itself in at least two places - by turning off the main highway south and north of the airport.

1) If you turn south, then driving past the fence behind which the airport is located, you will find yourself in national park Sirinath.

2) Entry fee for the park territory will be 200 baht per adult and 100 baht per child.

3) In principle, you can enter the park for free; I personally don’t remember anyone checking tickets. This can be done both from the northern entrance to Mai Khao Beach, and if you turn off the main road in the area of ​​Nai Yang Beach. However, in this case you will have to leave the car outside the park and walk to the beach.

4) The park is very good. Unlike the part of Mai Khao beach, which is located north of the airport, there is shade that will save you from the merciless heat.

5) And how calm and gorgeous the water is here! No waves, excellent visibility - a real paradise.

After relaxing in the lagoon of Sirinath Park, I went to the part of the beach where planes land overhead. It is located literally a little over a kilometer from the park. In principle, even from the park you can clearly see planes landing, but this is a little different - up close the impression is a hundred times stronger!

15) During the season there are quite a lot of people on this heel, but finding an angle and taking a good shot with an airplane overhead is quite possible.

Central and northern Mai Khao - where there is no one

Having taken plenty of photographs with the planes, we went to where tourists rarely set foot - to the long part of Mai Khao beach, located behind the airport. It’s not difficult to get here, just move along the main highway and dive into the first exit to the beach you come across right after you pass the airport.

23) And the beach did not disappoint us at all! Not very wide (25-30 meters), but a very long and deserted strip of sand several kilometers long. Last time I have only seen this in the low season.

Review and rating of Mai Khao from Travel or Die

I’ll tell you straight, although I personally liked Mai Khao Beach, even very much, it’s difficult to objectively call it a beach for everyone. Still, most tourists expect a more developed infrastructure and other benefits of civilization from their vacation, and on Mai Khao you will not find any kind of evening or nightlife, nor a decent selection of cafes and restaurants. Traveling somewhere without your own vehicle will be more than expensive. But if you want a secluded holiday away from large crowds of tourists, of which there are plenty on the more popular beaches of the island, then this is the place for you. The main thing is not to make a mistake when choosing a hotel and choose one that will offer you such good service that you won’t feel the need to go out somewhere for lunch and dinner.
I also advise those who are staying in other places to visit Mai Khao at least once. At least for the sake of cool photos with planes landing over the beach, for the sake of crystal clean water Sirinat beach and to realize that there are places in Phuket where along the entire multi-kilometer length of the beach there is no one except you and a few other people.

Mae Nam Beach is written differently by our compatriots: Maenam, Maenam, Mae-Nam, Mae Nam, but most people pronounce this word equally incorrectly - “maenam”, but they should say “menam”. The toponym of the beach was assigned to it after the name of the village of the same name, Ban Mae Nam, which is located along the ring road on this section of Koh Samui.

If you don’t pick too much on the differences in the graininess of the sand and the presence of vegetation on the shore, the beach is equally good along its entire length. Only in the east does it become almost twice as wide as elsewhere. On Maenam, as on - the sand is very loose and surprisingly similar to sugar, only golden yellow. The sand is soft, lies in small dunes, and you can’t just run through it barefoot, because your feet sink into it up to your ankles.

The beach is kept clean almost everywhere, with the exception of three wild areas:

• at the eastern end of the beach near an abandoned resort;
• in the middle, next to Buddha Beach, where construction is also suspended;
• on the westernmost edge of the beach, near the Black Rose bar.

On days when the sea is stormy, you can find small amounts of marine debris on the beach, but the morning after the Thai holiday Loi Krathong, it is better not to go out on the sand without shoes.

The fact is that one of the events of the holiday is the mass launching of homemade boats into the water with candles, incense and food. And the boats are made from palm leaves, bamboo and pins, which fall apart very quickly once in the open sea. By morning, the entire coastline, and Mae Nama is mined with leaves with needles sticking out in them.

Maenam is a popular beach. From May to December it is as deserted as all the beaches on Samui during the low season, but from December to May there are really a lot of people here. People, of course, don’t sit on each other’s heads, but you can only find comfortable privacy in wild areas.

There are three mouths of stinking rivers on Maenam, so when choosing housing you need to take a walk to the sea and make sure that you are not lucky enough to be adjacent to one of them.

Entering the water, depth and waves

Maenam is one of the few beaches whose quality does not change with low tide. This is one of the reasons for its popularity. The sea goes away five to seven meters, leaving people with level sand under the palm trees. The slope of the shore here is quite steep, the chest-deep depth will be already five meters from the water’s edge.

There are no stones or coral debris on Mae Nam, the entrance to the water is clean and comfortable, smooth, without surprises. Waves occur during the rainy season, quite strong and serious. With a good wind, the sea reaches right to the roots of the first row of palm trees, gradually washing them away.

It is better for children to purchase inflatable armbands in advance and should not let them go far from you. Especially in evening time when sea life begins to swim towards the shore.

Sunbeds and shade

From the east of Maenam to the Lompraya pier, the shore is a palm grove with plenty of natural shade. This is another reason for the high popularity of Maenam among vacationers with children. It's a big deal when children have a lot of space for activity, and not a sad little spot under an umbrella.

There are sunbeds in front of the hotels, but they are only for their own people, but on Buddha Beach there is a bar, near which there are a dozen bamboo gazebos. In this place you can sunbathe and order a cocktail. In general, I recommend this place, because the atmosphere of the old island is impressive and there are almost no compatriots there.

Infrastructure

Unlike the eternally sleepless, the main life on Maenam dies down with the onset of darkness. Most establishments and shops are closed, only cafes, restaurants and shops are open. You won’t be able to just go out for a walk at night on Mae Nam. Dark and boring.

But it has all the amenities and services of Koh Samui. Banks, ATMs, laundries, equipment rentals, auto and motorcycle services, gas stations, markets, night markets, cafes, restaurants, water dispensers, water pumping stations, taishops and large hardware stores, furniture and leather workshops - Maenam has it all. And this also makes it attractive to many.

There are separate bars on the beach itself, but mostly they are located on hotel grounds. There are rentals of kayaks and jet skis, but not in the same quantities, and this is probably due to the family nature of the beach.

Nearby attractions:

• Chinese temple in Ban Mae Nam;
• Secret Falls waterfall;
• cliff pagoda, the westernmost edge of the beach, overlooking Mae Nam;
• the Maenam-Lamai road, which starts at Soi Maenam1 and crosses the island in the middle all the way to Lamai;
• golf Club.

The first line is occupied by large hotels and expensive resorts.

• The most famous of the hotels is W-Retreat Koh Samui with its own fenced beach and beach infrastructure.

  For those who like large hotels, Thiptara Resort is a good option: a nice, clean hotel with green, well-kept grounds. There are tons of houses for rent along the entire beach, both inside and outside the Ring. For every taste, from concrete rooms for 3,000 baht per month to luxurious villas on the mountainside.

  Be sure (and I insist) to check for discounts or special offers on a great service. It will quickly and easily show you discounts in all existing systems reservations.   How to find the beach

  Access to Mae Nam beach is not limited; you can turn onto any street leading to the sea. The boundaries of the Maenam district are considered to be the Buddhist gate, behind which the road to the Lompraya pier and the Family Mart mini-market begins (on the left side of the village). And Family Mart on the main road, near which there is a banner with the name of Theeparatpittaya School, under which the road to W-Retreat Samui begins.

Think for yourself - decide for yourself.
I'll start with a charter flight with Yamal Airlines. The flight was rescheduled from 15:20 to 21:20. Many were warned through the agencies where the tour was purchased. We were not warned, we sat in Domodedovo for an extra 6 hours, we arrived at the hotel around 2 am the next day, i.e. one day of rest was stolen.
They gave us a room, like most Russians, with a view of the road. But the view has nothing to do with it, it’s impossible to sleep in this room even with earplugs! The next day we were moved to a room overlooking the pool and the hotel bar. We moved during the day, so we didn’t expect a catch, but the main catch is that in the bar in the evening and at night they smoke so hard that you could hang an ax, and you won’t be allowed to sleep until 3 am. The hosts of Europe are having a blast, not thinking about the fact that people need to get enough sleep on vacation, that there is an early excursion in the morning, etc. But this is not the most offensive thing! The main thing is that the owner of the hotel has crossed a line that should not be crossed: she supports all this and participates in everything (we will omit the details)! This is understandable: since the bar is open, money flows like a river into the cash register, this should be encouraged! It doesn’t matter that it’s 2 a.m., that people in the “unlucky” rooms can’t sleep and are choking on smoke—the coin will justify everything.
We demand to be moved to another room. They promise to provide a room on the 1st floor with a view of the garden the day after tomorrow. Provided on the minus-1st floor. There are mosquitoes in the room (take a fumigator), but this no longer scares us. The most important thing - isolation from the bar and the road - has been achieved. It doesn’t matter to anyone except us that half of the vacation has already passed, that there is no feeling of relaxation, continuous moving from room to room: folded things, put things away - 3 hours of precious time away!
The towels in the room are indeed very hard, they are not changed every day, they are dried in the garden, at the end of the building. Breakfast is very dreary! The only thing that pleased me was the yogurt; all the sausages and cheeses were of the lowest quality. The crisis is understandable, but is it possible to at least diversify something? Serve cottage cheese or oatmeal? Any baked goods other than dull cupcakes? Officially, breakfast starts at 7 am, but a full set of dishes appears around 7:30, so if you are going to have a full meal before the excursion, you are unlikely to succeed. We never dined at the hotel, but I saw that the choice of dishes was minimal. Apples are served cut into pieces, which immediately oxidize and do not look very presentable. Laying out whole apples or any whole fruits (peaches, plums) is apparently not destiny. Dinner is quite good for this hotel, the classic principle of “meat-poultry-fish” is almost always followed, melons, watermelons, grapes are sweet, there is again a problem with baked goods: something like a soufflé-cake, with vegetable cream, of the same type. There are enough salads and vegetables. The hostess often “controls” the dinner, sometimes clearing the plates herself, but you can never tell for sure whether she is watching the staff or your plates. Drinks at dinner are not cheap, so it makes sense to take a small electric kettle, mugs and make your own tea or coffee. The same applies to the iron if you take wrinkled items with you.
One evening we returned from an excursion and found the door to our room unlocked. In my opinion, this is completely unacceptable! The hotel management asked not to be upset; the maid simply forgot to close the door after cleaning the room. Like this: I just forgot, and if something had JUST disappeared from the room, it would have been our problem.
Of course, this hotel does not qualify for 4 stars, it is a strong “three” for Greece. Please note that on the same website you will find the same May hotel (without the word beach), which is declared as a three-star hotel.
The hotel certainly has its advantages: a good, well-kept internal area, swimming pools, free wi-fi throughout the entire territory, although small, but its own parking lot, but the main thing is a very convenient location for independent travel in Crete, close to Rethymno. In Platanias there are taverns, souvenir shops, car rental. There are fur shops near the Adele Beach Hotel (behind Platanias).
For the first time, the “picturesque” (according to some tourists) path and road to the beach simply horrified: there was dirt and unkemptness all around. But Greece is not a well-groomed Croatia; once you arrive, you need to switch your attention to something else. The beach is not particularly clean, not equipped, but quite acceptable. The main advantage is that there are very few people and a very clean sea, if there are no waves. We bought an umbrella and mats and felt independent: we camped wherever we wanted. The "River" tavern on the beach is very good, we mainly took shrimp and small fish - smelt, anchovies, sardines - everything was very tasty! If the sea is rough and you can’t swim, you can go to Bali beach - a very beautiful bay, but there are a lot of people.
Having familiarized yourself with the surrounding area, you understand that May beach is still quite a decent option, after all, it is separated from the road by a parking lot, there is a hedge of bushes on the side, and the interior area is very decent. Many hotels are located right next to the road - these are the local features.
The staff at the reception (hotel owner Maria, her husband and Sofia), of course, are friendly, Sofia and Maria can understand and explain a lot in Russian, if possible they try to get into the situation and help, but, of course, first of all, respect goes not to the Russians . M.b. Western Europeans, when booking a hotel, initially order a view from the room (the quietest rooms overlooking the garden) - I don’t know, but all of ours are accommodated in noisy and uncomfortable rooms, then, if possible, they can improve the conditions.
Tez tour is a special song. Of course, at the first meeting they try to sell you on their excursions; the phrase is standard among representatives of all tour operators: “I’m only at the hotel today, and then I can’t guarantee that I’ll show up, even despite the specified schedule of hotel visits.” Of course, you will not be allowed to think and get acquainted with the alternative, so prepare in advance. Not only that: you will find out the prices for excursions not when you receive the Tour Information package upon arrival, but only at a meeting with the guide. The return flight was delayed by 4 hours, and this was reported only an hour before the return transfer to the airport. Of course, if you knew about this at least 3 hours in advance, you could plan your time somehow differently, but no one cares about that. But this is not the worst thing. 5 minutes before arrival at Heraklion airport, a representative of Tez Tour reported that the Taimyr airline (aka Nord Star) allows only 15 kg of luggage and 5 kg hand luggage. And all things are already packed in film, and the weight is calculated from the standard requirements of charters: 20 kg per piece of luggage and 5 kg of hand luggage. There is no limit to the indignation of those departing, because the weight of luggage is indicated on the electronic ticket - 20 kg, but representatives of Tez Tour with a cold smile turn a deaf ear to everything! They say that we ourselves must look at the requirements of the airlines, that with Nord Star they always have to listen to the complaints of tourists. To the question “Couldn’t it be possible to write about this feature on the Tez Tour bulletin board in advance, so that there would be no scandals?”, we received the same Hollywood mocking smile in response. Like, nothing personal, just business! This is some kind of conspiracy of silence between travel agencies and tour operators. It’s clear that Tez Tour is in the running: after all, for every kg of excess weight you will have to pay 3 euros, so why give up the extra money? The fact that a tourist could have spent everything to the last, or the hotel does not have free Internet - no one cares! We have long come to terms with the fact that abroad we are treated as not the first-class people, but when they try to rob our own people additionally in the rather nervous conditions of registration for departure - this is no good, brothers!
And then we were struck by a thought that has already visited many: that’s it, no tour operators or travel agencies! Now we only book hotels and flights ourselves! It is clear that soon there will be practically no travel agencies left, now many tourists order and book everything themselves, and instead of fighting for the client, you get such rudeness, then what else can we talk about?!
In general, we liked the trip to Crete, we didn’t stay in the hotel all the time, we went on excursions, traveled by car ourselves, and saw a lot. To go or not to go to this hotel, and how to go - of course, the choice is yours. Study reviews, compare with other hotels, figure out in advance where you would like to go, study the websites of the airlines you are flying with, before leaving for the airport, be sure to look at the departure board, call the information desk: Domodedovo delayed all Greek and not only Greek flights. I tried to write as accurately and truthfully as possible about what I saw and experienced myself. I understand that my review stands out from the series of panegyrics that are sung for this hotel. By whom they are sung is another question: either they are written by the Russian language teacher from whom Sofia takes lessons, or people were simply lucky with the accommodation, or they travel little and, mainly, in three-star hotels, and have seen something worse - not I know!
I would like to wish the hotel staff success in their work and take into account various reviews. After all, if you want, you can limit the work of the hotel bar to 23 hours, or continue “meetings” in the pool bar, it is more separated from the rooms, there you can not disturb anyone. You can somehow diversify the breakfast menu, change the towels to softer ones, heat the water better, etc. There would be a desire! The hotel is, indeed, from the Soviet era, with appropriate furnishings, plumbing, antediluvian safes, poor sound insulation, etc. If this cannot be changed, then some other aspects that do not require global investments need to be changed, because the price for this “troika” is not at all triple!

But if you want to relax in comfort and not look for a palm tree that could shelter you from the scorching sun, you will have to pay for such a place. And the prices for renting an umbrella, sunbed and towel are not small. At some private beaches, entrance and rental of beach equipment costs the price of a weekly metro pass.

If you decide to go on vacation to the beaches of America on your own, then, of course, you yourself will look for a cheap flight and a hotel or hostel in advance. You can save a lot of money on such a vacation, and it will cost you the same price as a beach vacation in Europe or even Asia. But if you decide to purchase a beach tour from an operator (it will be cheaper than an excursion tour, oddly enough), you must specify the accommodation format in advance. If your hotel has its own recreation area by the water, you will not have to pay extra for equipment. Otherwise, plan to spend between $10 and $30 each day for a sun lounger and umbrella.
