One day, an acquaintance who lived in Portugal for a long period of her life brought me a souvenir - a figurine of a black rooster made of clay. Geese saved Rome. What made the black rooster famous in the Mediterranean country? Then I didn’t ask the donor. Our meeting was fleeting. The cockerel has settled on my table for meals and acts as a toothpick holder.
Yesterday I was unexpectedly given another souvenir in the form of a cockerel. The gift has no functional meaning other than decorative. A bright green cockerel with a red beak and a bright comb on a stick made me smile and ask: what is this for? What kind of symbol? While searching for information on the Internet, I discovered a legend about a black cockerel from Portugal.
Once upon a time, in the Middle Ages, pilgrims walked to Santiago de Compostela and stopped for the night in a small town Barcelos , which is in the north of Portugal. But then it was not just a town, but the capital of the first county of independent Portugal (1298) and the residence of the founder of the ducal dynasty Braganza - future kings Portugal (since 1640). Among the pilgrims there was a certain young man Galician , whom the owner of the inn really liked, and she harassed him in every possible way. But the pilgrim stood his ground and refused the woman. The young man was captured, and the local judge sentenced him to death (such harsh laws were in Barcelos at that time).
Before his execution, the pilgrim asked for an audience with the man who sentenced him to death. The prisoner's last request was respected. The unfortunate man was immediately released from the noose and released in peace.

A few years later, the pilgrim returned to Barcelos , where he installed a memorial cross dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Saint Jacob. So Galician thanked his heavenly patrons for the “Miracle of Salvation” shown to him. His offering to the Patron Saints is the "Cross of the Hero of the Legend of the Rooster" (Cruzeiro do Senhor do Galo ) - kept among the ruins of the Counts' Palace Barcelos (Paco dos Condes de Barcelos).
