For some reason, many people, when thinking about Greece, immediately remember Athens. Meanwhile, this country has much more to offer tourists. interesting places- a huge number of islands, each of which is interesting in its own way.

Corfu Island

The description of this place usually begins with words about the climate, unique historical value, hospitable people, and delicious national cuisine. Of course, all this is true, and this is enough to choose this particular island for your holiday.

In fact, it now has a different name - Kerkyra (with emphasis on the first syllable). The old one has been preserved from the times when this territory belonged to Italy. In addition to the Russian language, the same name appears as the main one in a number of European languages, although the official name is still indicated on the maps.

The island is located off the western coast of mainland Greece, and stretches along it for 65 kilometers. Its northern tip begins next to the territory of Albania. To the west is Italy.

The average annual temperature on the island is 22 degrees above zero. The rainy season lasts from October to March; the rest of the time, Corfu is a real paradise for tourists. So, what should you see in Corfu to leave here with the best impressions?

History of the island

In order to understand what to see in Corfu, you need to look into its past. After all, having learned a little about its history, you can understand what will be the most interesting. And there is something to explore.

IN different time Corfu was a colony of Corinth, came under the rule of Sparta, united with Athens, was part of the Roman, and later the Byzantine Empire. In the Middle Ages, the island was recaptured from each other several times by representatives of the cities of modern Italy, and Venice ruled it for about 400 years. For a short time Corfu remained the territory of Turkey, and in the 19th century - even of France. After being under British rule for some time, it finally (in 1864) finally became part of Greece, although Italy repeatedly occupied it during several wars.

Corfu is interesting because some ancient buildings and even part of the old city of Kerkyra, located north of the modern one, have been preserved here. In addition, Venetian culture obviously had a huge influence. Architecture, art, even the peculiarities of the local language - everything reflects four centuries of Italian dominance. And this gives it a special charm.

In the myths of Ancient Greece

Even the name of this island comes from the name of a nymph - that’s how much the Greeks respect their legends. Kerkyra was stolen by the god of the seas Poseidon. And if before this, according to Homer, the island was called Scheria, then later it was named in honor of the nymph for whom it became a new home.

Largest cities on Corfu island

According to the 2001 census, just over 110 thousand people live in Kerkyra. So there is no need to talk about truly large populated areas.

The capital of the island remains the most densely populated - Kerkyra or Corfu, located on the east coast. Almost 25 thousand people live here. There are several other towns and villages, but the most popular, besides the capital, are Paleokastritsa and Perama. Hotels are mainly located on the coast, but there is always some settlement nearby, so there is no need to worry about infrastructure.

Main tourist attractions

So, what to see in Corfu? Of course, each traveler will answer this question in his own way, but there are also traditionally popular tourist places here. Among other things, the island is very picturesque, especially its northern part. The fortresses of the Citadel and Angelokastro, numerous churches and monasteries, museums, Pontikonisi, Paleokastritsa - Corfu offers a choice for every taste. So, what is worth visiting first?

  • Old town of Kerkyra. In 2007, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, so it is worth taking a look at at least once. Narrow streets, Baroque architecture, balconies, elegant windows, arches - literally everything here resembles Italy.
  • Monastery of Vlaherna. The snow-white building is extremely popular among tourists, probably due to the fact that Pontikonisi is located nearby.
  • Church of St. Spyridon. This place is literally the symbol of Corfu. Almost every visitor brings photographs of this church home. The temple contains the relics of St. Spyridon, which once a year, on Easter, are carried throughout the city.
  • Old and New fortresses. In Greek they are respectively called Paleo Frourio and Neo Frourio. The old one was built by the Venetians, now it has been restored and is used for cultural events, although not all the buildings have survived. They started building the new one (even though it has that name) even earlier. Its walls offer stunning panoramic views, contrasting with the gloom of its interiors. They say that under the fortress there is a whole labyrinth of underground passages. And now there is a naval base here.
  • Liston Street. It was designed by a French architect and is very reminiscent of Rivoli. Previously, only people belonging to the high circles society. Nowadays there are boutiques, restaurants and cafes here.
  • Spianada Square. It is considered the largest on the island and the main one in the city. Here it is a large number of museums, several Christian churches and a beautiful park.
  • Paleokastritsa. Corfu, although it is the most Big City, is not always the most interesting. Therefore, it is worth visiting the neighboring coast, especially since there is a beautiful beach here and the views are extremely picturesque.
  • Kanoni. This area of Corfu is charming at sunset. Here you can watch planes landing, and many tourists consider this a wonderful sight.
  • Pontikonisi, or Mouse Island. Corfu is surrounded on all sides by small areas of land, and although not all of them are popular, this one is often visited by tourists. Despite the name, there are no mice here; Pontikonisi is simply shaped like a rodent. According to legend, this used to be the ship of Odysseus, which the angry Poseidon turned into an island.
  • Pantocrator. The highest point of the island, from where a stunning panorama opens and you can even see the coast of Albania.

In general, the easiest way is to rent a car or scooter for a few days and travel around the entire island in search of your own unique experiences, especially since it is unlikely to take much time. So, to get from Kerkyra to Paleokastritsa, you only need to travel about 20-30 kilometers.

(Greece), of course, does not stop there. Amazing nature, clean sea air, the atmosphere of Italy, museums full of antiquities - here literally every stone breathes history. So why not enjoy it?

Beaches

Of course, many tourists don’t think about what to see in Corfu, but just want to lie in the sun and splash in the sea. They will also be satisfied, because the island has a wide variety of beaches, lagoons and bays. The most famous of them is Paleokastritsa. Corfu, however, does not exhaust its collection of beaches: rocky Peroulades, located in the north of the island, sandy Agios Gordis and Glyfada, perfect for children. It should be noted that on the eastern side the sea is calmer, and the most fashionable hotels are located here.

Another curious beach has the romantic French name “Canal of Love”, since two rocks forming a small bay in the shape of a heart, according to legend, used to be two lovers, but they were separated. A couple who swims across the bay together, according to the sign, will be together forever, and those who are just looking for their love swim through a natural tunnel in the hope that this will help them soon find happiness. This beach is a unique attraction and is very popular among tourists.

Other entertainment

Young people will also be interested here, because natural conditions allow you to engage in sports such as diving, snorkeling, kayaking, yachting. Perhaps the views underwater are not as picturesque as in the Red Sea, but the abundance of caves perfectly compensates for this. Of course, there are bars and nightclubs for those who prefer to stay up until the morning. Water parks, at hotels and not only, are suitable for families. In the end, you can simply bring a fishing rod with you, as many Europeans do, and calmly meditate while looking at the float.

Neighboring islands and territories

Despite the fact that Corfu occupies absolutely small area, many tourists return here again and again. Naturally, they have no desire to look at the same sights, so many go on short trips to Albania, Italy and mainland Greece, as well as to neighboring islands such as Paxos and Antipaxos, which, according to legend, were once part of Kerkyra, but Poseidon separated them with a blow of his trident so that he would have a quiet place to rest. Ferry services are well established, so travel and excursions in and around Corfu will not be a problem. Of course, someone will say that in this case it is not worth going to Kerkyra, but the indescribable atmosphere attracts tourists here again and again.

Since Kerkyra, the same visa rules apply here as in the rest of the country. It is best to obtain a long-term Schengen visa, which allows for multiple entries, especially since consular officials in last years They began to treat Russians much more favorably.

Don't get hung up on one restaurant located nearby. Greek cuisine is beautiful and amazing, and if you go away from the tourist spots, you can enjoy its authenticity with a glass of locally produced wine.

Andrey (32 years old, Novokuznetsk):

“I rented a car and drove around all of Corfu in five days. Without a car it would be more difficult to do this. My wife and I compared prices, and it turned out that if we booked excursions, we would have spent more. I paid for the car immediately upon arrival on the island (price: 40 euros per day). I read reviews that you can rent for 20. Don’t believe it, you won’t find it cheaper than 25-30 euros. I’ll give you some advice on how to save: after 4-5 days, return the car and take a scooter - you’ll pay less for parking, and your gas consumption will be much lower. It’s not so comfortable to ride together, but in the end, by switching to a scooter, we saved 30%.”

A car also gives you freedom of movement.

We hope that this article helped you create your own route and mark all the interesting places on the map of Corfu. Feel free to take your camera with you and go for a walk, climb, descend and be sure to take pictures!

The island has many interesting places to visit - from beautiful beaches to mountain peaks, from monasteries to fortresses and castles.

Achilleon

The famous Achilleion is perhaps the most striking attraction of Corfu. It is located in the picturesque village of Gasturi. This magnificent palace was built in 1890 especially for Elisabeth (Sissi), the former Empress of Austria and served as her favorite summer residence.

Legend says that the empress, having visited the island, fell in love with it, so much so that she immediately decided to build her residence here. The palace was erected on the site of the estate of the famous Greek philosopher Petros Brailis Armenis. Sissi was amazed and fascinated by Greece, as well as the ancient Greek legends and myths associated with it. Her favorite hero was Achilles, to whom she dedicated her villa.

Achilleion is located in a picturesque location on a hill, offering stunning views of the Corfu coast. Below there is a stone pier, the so-called Kaiser's Bridge, where ships of noble people moored. The local garden is replete with expertly crafted statues greek gods and goddesses, and the main one is “wounded Achilles”. Today, visitors to the Palace can admire the luxurious interiors: delightful frescoes located in the halls, luxurious paintings, marble staircases, sculptures and carved furniture. The popularity of Achilleion was also increased by the filming of the famous James Bond film “For Your Eyes Only” in 1981.

Spianada

On the eastern cape of the island, overlooking the turquoise Ionian Sea, guarded by two old fortresses, lies Kerkyra, the capital of Corfu. The old town, once surrounded by a wall, is a maze of narrow cobbled streets and buildings of elegant Italian architecture (with wrought iron balconies and terracotta roofs). The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The busiest place in Kerkyra is the famous Spianada. This is the main square of the island and a central meeting point for locals and tourists. It was created on the model of European royal squares and is the largest in the Balkans and one of the largest in Europe. In the summer, a symphony orchestra plays here in the evenings. Next to the square lies Liston Street, a wide promenade designed by the French engineer Mathieu de Lesseps and the Greek Ioannis Parmesan, built at the beginning of the 18th century. Previously, only aristocrats and members of their families had the right to walk along this chic street. According to one version, the street itself got its name from the word “list” (“sheet”), where the names of the lucky ones who had the right to take a walk were indicated. Today, the two long Venetian-style galleries, decorated with graceful arches, are always full of people enjoying coffee or drinks in one of the many cafes.

Old fortress of Kerkyra

The Old Fortress of Corfu is one of the most impressive fortifications in Europe. It stands east of the Old Town, on a rocky peninsula jutting out into the sea. The fortress was built by the Venetians in the 15th century on the site of a Byzantine castle. To make it safer, it was surrounded by an artificial ditch, 15 meters deep and 40 meters wide, separating it from the mainland and known as Contra-Fossa. The fortress was connected to the ground by a huge wooden drawbridge. In 1819, the British replaced this bridge with a steel one.

The entrance to the fortress is through Spianada, and the most significant surviving monuments of the fort are the central gate, bastions with the names of the Italian engineers Savornian and Martinengo, the Doric Church of St. George (1840), the prison, the British hospital and British barracks, the Clock Tower and lighthouse. If you climb to the very top high point fortress, you will have an incredible view of the city and the beautiful Ionian Sea.

Mouse Island

Kanoni with the Church of Panagia Vlaherna and Mouse Island are famous and photographed places in Corfu. Many luxury hotels are located on the hill, surrounded by lush greenery. A few steps down the hill from Kanoni and you will reach the shore, to the small church of Panagia Blachernae. A narrow passage connects the island to the monastery. Built in the 17th century, this beautiful church has an impressive carved wooden iconostasis and beautiful frescoes. Fishing boats often sail from the church to the legendary Mouse Island, just a 5-minute drive away. The lush green islet got its name because of its tiny size. According to mythology, this is the former ship of Odysseus, which was turned into stones and then into an island by the god Poseidon.

In the center of the islet stands the 13th-century Church of Pantocrator. At the top of Kanoni Hill there are a couple of cafes with beautiful views of the Blachernae monastery, the sea and the island. What also makes this place unusual is that the airport runway is located literally a few meters away, and you can admire how planes take off and land literally above your head. It is especially beautiful to watch this spectacle at sunset.

Church of St. Spyridon

Corfu's main religious monument, the Church of Saint Spyridon, was built in 1590. They say that Saint Spyridon saved the island from danger four times: in 1533 from famine, in 1629 he freed the islanders from the plague, in 1716 he saved Corfu from an Ottoman attack, and in 1673 he again saved the locals from a fatal disease. That is why the people of Corfu respect him very much and consider him their patron, and the most common male name on the island - Spiridon.

Located in the heart of the capital, the church is the final resting place of the elder, whose remains are kept in a sarcophagus inside. There are four processions from the temple each year: August 11 (the date the Turks abandoned their siege of the island in 1716), Palm Sunday, Easter and the first Sunday in November, when the relics of St. Spyridon are carried throughout the city at the head of the procession. On three other occasions, his coffin is displayed for public viewing and worship. The Basilica of Saint Spyridon is a classic example of Venetian architecture in Corfu, and its bell tower was erected in 1620 and is today the tallest in the city.

Paleokastritsa

On the northwestern coast of Corfu is Paleokastritsa, which is considered one of the most beautiful towns in all of Greece. Surrounded by olive groves and cypress trees, it consists of several bays and has more than a dozen beaches. According to legend, this is the place where Odysseus was shipwrecked and met Nausicaä. Local beaches offer excellent opportunities for swimming, diving and other water sports, where you can also rent boats and yachts. There are many secluded coves, wild beaches and caves that are definitely worth a visit.

On a green hill above the main beach of Paleokastritsa rises the large monastery complex of Theotoku, dedicated to Panagia (Virgin Mary) Paleokastritsa. From its height there are magnificent views of the coast and sea. The Byzantine monastery dates back to 1228, but the current complex, the monks' cells and the courtyard were built only in the 18th century. There is a small church museum on site with rare Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons, holy books and other relics. Inside the monastery you can see how a traditional press works to produce olive oil, and in the yard make a wish by throwing a coin into the local well.

Mount Pantocrator

Mount Pantokrator is located in the north-eastern part of the island of Corfu. Its height is 906 m, it is the highest mountain on the island. From above you can see the entire island of Corfu, Albania and even Italy on a clear day, despite being 130 km away. At the top there is a small Greek Orthodox monastery from the mid-14th century. Although the original church was destroyed, two centuries later a new building was built in its place, the facade of which was reconstructed in the 19th century. The top of Pantokrator can be reached by car or on foot.

The hiking trail to the peak leads through Old Perithia, an ancient mountain village on the island. Situated high on the mountain, it once served as a refuge from pirate attacks. Today, visitors can wander the cobbled streets, enjoy a drink in one of the four taverns and sample local cuisine.

Angelokastro/h2>

Angelokastro, or Angel's Castle, is one of the most important Byzantine castles in Greece. It is located in the northwestern part of the island of Corfu, on the top of a cliff, at an altitude of 305 m above sea level. Angelokastro was built in the 13th century and served as a defensive structure. Situated in an inaccessible location, it played an important role in the fate of Corfu for many centuries.

The fortress was attacked more than once, but fell only once - in 1386, after a six-month siege by the Venetians. The castle has an arched gate, while inside are the ruins of water chambers and storage areas. Here you can also see the Church of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel and the Chapel of St. Kyriaki, built right in a cave, in which frescoes from the 18th century have been preserved.
