He is a well-known person in business, and just listing the positions of Alexander Meshkov will take up a lot of space: Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Gazprom Transgaz Belarus enterprise, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Board of OJSC Gazprom, Advisor to the Chairman of the Board of Gazprom... However, in his native Brest all these positions are secondary. Here, Alexander Anatolyevich is better known as a sports philanthropist, who, together with his brother, revived handball in the city, founding a team in memory of his father and coach - BGK named after Meshkov.

For the residents of Brest, he belongs, as they say, to the board. I was born in the area of Cosmonauts Boulevard, then my parents moved to live in a hostel. My father worked at a pedagogical institute, and my mother worked at a knitting factory.

And when I turned seven, we moved to a mansion,” Meshkov smiles into his gray mustache.

To the mansion?

It was a house, as we say, “behind the Polish hour.” It housed three families. One shared bathroom, shared bathroom and kitchen, stove heating. So my brother and I went through a good school as children: how to apply coal and chop wood.

How do you remember Brest from your childhood?

Beautiful, good city. I like Brest, I really do, and I’ve always felt comfortable here. It was just that one day circumstances turned out so bad that I had to leave. And my passion for handball is also not without reason. At first I played football, and from the fifth grade I switched to handball. True, going to competitions was a problem for me. My parents didn’t let me go, they said: “We have to study.” Although they themselves were athletes. Mom is the captain of the women's regional basketball team, dad is the men's basketball team. In the 10th grade, I already played for the student handball team, coached by my father. My opponents on the court, and I played in goal, were Alexander Karshakevich, Yuri Shevtsov - they played for IFK, Zhora Sviridenko, who ran for the Minsk region. They invited me to join the national team of the republic, they invited me to the Minsk sports boarding school, but my parents insisted: I had to study. Which is what I've been doing since then.

The magnificent Victoria Palace of Team Sports is also the work of Meshkov. Not long ago, handball in Brest was slowly dying, but now the Victoria stands are sold out, and the fans are considered the most advanced in the country. The Brest team has adopted the character and determination of their patron (and without these qualities it is unlikely that a simple Brest resident would have been able to reach the very top of Gazprom’s hierarchical ladder) and is now eager to conquer Europe. To begin with, however, dreaming of throwing the long-time national champion, Dynamo Minsk, off the pedestal.

BGK's plans for the current season are truly Napoleonic and they will begin to implement them in Brest today. In the evening, the stands of “Victoria” will make the usual noise, welcoming the team - BGK named after Meshkov starts in the SEHA-league. And already this weekend the matches of the qualifying round of the EHF Cup will be played. We talked about handball matters and more with Alexander Meshkov the day before, having met with him under the arches of Victoria during the recent Belgazprombank Cup.

Do you know the history of our palace? - he asked, scratching his gray beard. - How we looked for architects, sent them to Moscow, where they got acquainted with new modern trends. Our ventilated facades were one of the first to be used in Belarus.

Are you proud of your palace?

Certainly. And we are also proud when the stands are filled to capacity, when about four and a half thousand fans gather and they, as they say, cheer like adults. In general, I think that Brest fans are the most prepared and understand this game. They have the opportunity to see great handball more than anyone else in the country; clubs often come to us high level. This includes the SEHA League, the EHF Cup, and the Belgazprombank Cup.

The SEHA-league is now sponsored by Gazprom. Do you really want to make it a KHL handball?

It is very important for us to promote our South Stream project, and it just passes through the Balkans. Although the SEHA League is now quite self-sufficient, this is the only such project. There is simply no other sport where there is such a tournament, where teams from so many countries would participate at once. After all, mind you, clubs from Slovakia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Serbia, Croatia, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Belarus play in the league. At the same time, our league is not going to compete with anyone, we will simply grow and expand.

This is also a very profitable competition for clubs...

The conditions are really good. The League assumes all logistics obligations - flights, accommodation, meals. All teams can do is come and play. Plus - the prize fund. But the main thing is game practice. Because, as a rule, in all regional leagues there are one or two teams that are clearly stronger than the rest and there is no talk of decent competition. So it is with us, and in Macedonia and Croatia.

When creating the club, did you imagine its future approximately this way?

At the very beginning, we didn’t swing so wide and high. We had the task of preserving the memory of our father, a handball devotee and honored coach. Once, when the Brest team failed to enter the championship due to lack of money for the entry fee, my brother and I said: enough is enough. In 2001, the club was thus created. Handball has always been a capital sport. All managers and specialists were there. We are developing a peripheral club. But, living in Moscow and knowing Moscow’s scale, I force people to move here, to adapt to the capital’s pace.

It turns out?

And they have no other choice. For the first five years we were euphoric. Then problems started, the generation changed, coaches and players no longer met the level we demand. We had to go to Europe to get the players. And there they asked: what is this Brest, where did it come from? They know our team now: the club has the history, ambitions and means to solve its problems. But then it wasn’t. And we had to create all this. Lithuanian coaches appeared in the club structure for a reason. We needed communication to Europe, we needed to attract European level players. They would never come to us under Belarusian coaches, except under Shevtsov. However, Yuri Anatolyevich did not agree to move to Brest; he has his own tasks in the national team. This is how the Lithuanian vector in the development of the club emerged.

Did this card play?

Yes. Today this is both the SEHA League and players of a certain European level in the squad. Our head coach Zeljko Babic is a very serious specialist. The guys have already felt it modern approaches and methods. Moreover, the club’s main goal for the season is to become the national champion and win the Cup. And Zeljko knows how to build tactics, how to play against Boris Denich, and therefore against Dynamo Minsk. Plus, we signed the Slovenian national team point guard David Spieler - he is also aware of many secrets, I think. In general, serious “selection” work has been carried out. Dima Kamyshik, I think, will take a worthy place in the team, they retained Slava Shumak and Vitaly Cherepenko, Max Baranov... Last year many told us that we lost Denis Volyntsev. Yes, the guy was a star in Gomel, but he needed time to get used to the loads and approaches here, this is a qualitatively different level. Now Volyntsev plays and gives results: at the Belgazprombank Cup he was recognized as the best player of the team.

You said that you want to bring the “Final Four of the EHF Cup” to Belarus. And you want to see your team there.

If we get there and the EHF decides to give the tournament to Belarus, then we will, of course, hold it in the Minsk Arena. But in any case, the club faces the task of getting into the group tournament. I believe that Zeljko Babic can do this - he is a fan of his work.

Other coaches couldn't. And there have been quite a few of them at BGK...

They themselves left the club due to certain circumstances. Realizing, for example, that they are not coping with the assigned tasks. Some realized their inadequacy and left on their own, like the last coach Miglius Astrauskas, while others’ health failed. A Russian specialist like Anatoly Drachev worked for us. The man has a bad heart, he had three heart attacks! It was impossible to talk to him after the game, he was so worried. And at the same time - completely Small child in family. I just didn't want any trouble to happen here. Yes, there were problems last year when the team lacked not only game discipline, but also discipline in general. Because European liberalism does not quite fit the Slavic reality. We need a baton that would periodically move around one place. Babich knows how to use both the carrot and the stick very clearly. And the guys understand this. In this regard, I am pleased with the situation. To solve championship problems, there must be a coach with the appropriate mentality and willingness to lead the team to these milestones. I hope that we will work with Babich for a long time and productively.

If you compare the club’s budget now and five years ago.

This is heaven and earth. We are forced to meet a certain level, and the budget in this matter is the main measure. After all, we were negotiating not only with Balich, we wanted to see three players from the Russian national team from the “Chekhov’s Bears” team. And all three were ready to satisfy financially. We also talked with Sergei Gorbok. But his situation is complicated; after all, he didn’t leave Belarus very well. We tried to get him back, but after consulting with his family, he decided to go to Germany under worse conditions, fearing that he would not be received very well at the Belarusian venues.

If the team completes the task and displaces Dynamo from first place in the championship, will the players be generously rewarded?

No one has ever noticed us being tight-fisted. We have never been misers.
