What is "By the sweat of your brow"

By the sweat of one’s brow (one’s own) - to work hard, to achieve something with great suffering and difficulties. Sometimes there is irony in the expression.
The origin of the phrase is the Old Testament, Genesis 3, 19. This chapter talks about Eve, who, succumbing to the persuasion of the tempting serpent, violated God’s prohibition “not to eat from any tree in paradise” and tasted the fruit from the tree and even gave it to her husband Adam to try. God found out, got angry, and punished everyone: the snake, Eve, Adam. To the latter he prophesied:

“Because you listened to the voice of your wife and ate from the tree, about which I commanded you, saying: You shall not eat from it; cursed is the ground for your sake; you will eat from it in sorrow all the days of your life; it will bring forth thorns and thistles. you; and you will eat the grass of the field; your bread you will eat, until you return to the ground from which you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust you will return."
