In the old days, on the day of the prophet Nahum, fathers of families began to teach their children to read and write. For this purpose, arrangements were made in advance with the parish sexton or other person. The whole family went to church, where after mass they served a prayer service, asking for a blessing on the youth. The teacher appeared at the appointed time at the parents' house, where he was greeted with honor and with a kind word, were seated in the front corner with bows. Here, holding his son by the hand, the father handed him over to the teacher with requests to teach him to be smart and treat him to beatings for laziness. The student, approaching the teacher, was obliged to create three prostrations. After this, the teacher gently hit his student on the back three times with a whip. The mother sat her son at the table, handed him a patterned bone pointer, the teacher unfolded the alphabet, and the great wisdom began: az-earth-er-az. After the work, the teachers treated them to what God had sent and gave them gifts. This custom is explained by the fact that the month of December is the most convenient and free month in agricultural life for rural children to study books, and our church dedicates the first day of this month to the memory of St. Naum. It is also natural that, when thinking about engaging in science - a mental matter - one of our simple-minded readers might think that the very name of the prophet - Nahum - is related to the education of the mind. Russian peasants said about Naum: “Father Naum brings to mind” - and they believed that it is good to start teaching children not only on the day of St. Naum, but at every time of the year with prayer to him.
