One of the most controversial characters in the animated series about the adventures of SpongeBob is Squidward. Squidward Quincy Tentacle - that's exactly what his sound sounds like full name- an octopus, but some people confuse it with a squid, obviously because it does not have eight tentacles - there are only six of them. The animators of the series explained this artistic decision by saying that with eight tentacles, Squidward would look too bulky. And so - always fit and even skinny, which perfectly complements his character, Squidward gets by just fine with the help of six tentacles.

Squidward was unlucky with his place of residence. Let his cute little house unusual shape both convenient and interesting, but he managed to settle down between the houses of Patrick and Sponge! It is for this reason that various troubles constantly occur - friends interfere with his sleep, rest and, in general, life. In addition, the couple also demands friendship from Squid, which in itself is unthinkable. The octopus has to cross paths with Sponge regularly - they work in the same establishment, the Krusty Krab diner, but Squidward is at a lower level and holds the position of cashier. It must be said that this character hates his job and constantly philanders, every now and then immersing himself in reading magazines, sleeping, or simply doing other things at his workplace.

This is all Squidward - against the backdrop of the always cheerful, sweet and restless characters of the animated series, this six-fingered inhabitant of the seabed seems like a real alien. And this is natural - after all, his mood never rises, he is full of cynicism, sarcasm and anger towards the residents of Bikini Bottom around him. The only person Squidward has a positive attitude towards is himself. Yes, this character is not without narcissism - in fact, he adores himself and is constantly trying to become famous so that the world knows about his genius. The path to this, as Squidward sincerely believes, lies through his artistic talent. In the animated series, you can see many times how the octopus plays the flute, or tries to take part in a singing competition, become an actor or a sculptor. Of course, art is the right path for Squidward, and the fact that he doesn’t succeed in this field doesn’t bother him: everything will still happen. After all, he is a refined nature! In the animated series, by the way, you can see how he sometimes immerses himself in the ordinary world, full of ordinary things, such as Krabby Patties, and sincerely enjoys it - but still denies this to the public.

Another disadvantage in Squidward's character is envy. His eternal enemy is fellow student Squilliam, who has succeeded in life and is a wealthy, respected octopus in society. Squidward often tries to reach the level of his enemy and teach him a lesson, to show him that he, too, is not made by a finger, however, as a rule, nothing works out for Squid and he is in Once again becomes a target for jokes and ridicule.

In the animated series you can meet Squidward's family, with whom our hero does not have the easiest relationship, which is not surprising - after all, he considers himself much higher and better than all these ordinary people.

You will undoubtedly be pleased with several facts from Squidward's life that you might not have guessed:

  • Squidward's trademark is his laugh, which was pioneered by voice actor Roger Bumpess;
  • Squidward ranks second after the main character of the animated series in terms of frequency of appearances in episodes - 278 out of 332;
  • In almost every episode, Squidward tries to avoid going out with Sponge and Patrick - and in one he even hides from them in the refrigerator;
  • Squidward's birthday is August 6, 1962;
  • Over the course of all the episodes of the animated series, Squidward tried his hand at playing the clarinet, radio DJing, dancing, creating sculptures, drawing, and even appeared as a TV presenter;
  • Squidward is the only character who has never had a romantic interest.

About fire under water, drowning fish, corners in a pineapple house and they called all this the most logical moments of “SpongeBob”. In general, all this was just a warm-up. The Square Pants series is an endless source of mind facepalms. And we have accumulated a number of questions for the authors of SpongeBob, to which there are unlikely to be answers.

1. Why hasn’t the pineapple house rotted yet?

2. How did it happen that Mr. Krabs' daughter is a whale with pew lips?

3. Why does Squidward only wear a tank top?

4. How does Karen's computer work underwater?

5. What did sunlight forget at the bottom of the ocean?

6. Where did these transparent flowers that are everywhere come from?!

7. Why does Gary the snail meow?

8. Did Sandy's dome come with wood and grass?

9. Why is the Seahorse a pet and the Starfish a “person”?

10. How well do musical instruments perform underwater?

11. Why doesn’t all this omnomnom get wet?

12. In what ocean do squid and sponge with such skeletons live?

13. Sea Superman, Barnacle Boy... So people also quietly exist under water?

14. How does this mimimi creature (we forget that it’s a cockroach) survive in the ocean?

15. Where do they get the meat for Krabby Patties?

Squidward Tentacles(English) Squidward Tentacles) - one of the main characters of the American animated series "SpongeBob SquarePants", voiced by Roger Bumpass (in the Russian version by Ivan Agapov).

General information

Skidward Tentacles, SpongeBob's neighbor. Squidward loves all kinds of art. He prefers to play the clarinet (albeit very poorly) and draw (although no one appreciates his creations). Squidward works as a cashier at the Krusty Krab. He is annoyed by everything around him, including SpongeBob and Patrick. But most of all he can't stand SpongeBob. Squidward himself is an octopus or squid. As we know, a living octopus has 8 tentacles, and Squidward has 6. You ask why? The answer is that the artists who created Squidward found it difficult to draw 8 tentacles.

Relationships with neighbors

Squidward's house

Squidward lives between SpongeBob's pineapple house and Patrick's rock, in a large stone head similar to the Easter Island statue. While his neighbors SpongeBob and Patrick are very cheerful and cheerful, Squidward is very irritable. SpongeBob and Patrick consider Squidward theirs best friend, but Squidward himself does not share this opinion with them. Squidward made his feelings towards them clear to them, but SpongeBob and Patrick don't care. Their pranks and games irritate Squidward, but in some circumstances he may be reluctant to participate in them.

Art

Squidward is a diligent artist and musician, although his abilities are not recognized. In the series Culture Shock Squidward wanted to become the highlight of the program with his act, but the audience did not appreciate his dance and were much more willing to accept SpongeBob, who was cleaning the stage. However, in the series Artist Unknown Squidward, in a fit of rage, accidentally created a beautiful sculpture.

Job

Squidward works as a cashier at the Krusty Krab and, unlike SpongeBob, hates his job. Workplace Squidward is located next to the kitchen where SpongeBob works, which also does not delight him. Squidward was fired more than once due to Mr. Krabs' greed, but eventually returned to work.

Notes

One day, SpongeBob accidentally smashed Squidward's face in with a door. Finding himself in the hospital, Squidward realizes that he is very handsome, and the whole of Bikini Bottom is chasing him to get an autograph. Then SpongeBob smashes his face with the door again and he becomes even more beautiful.

Episode SpongeBob SquarePants Help Wanted Help Wanted Episode Card Season: One Episode: 1a Writer: Stephen Hillenburg, Derek Draimo ... Wikipedia

The animated series "SpongeBob SquarePants" collected $140 million at the worldwide box office and was among the top five best animated adaptations. How did an anthropomorphic sponge that lives in a pineapple manage to win the sympathy of not only children, but also adults? The following 14 facts will help you find out the answer to this question.

1. The idea to create SpongeBob SquarePants came to the mind of Stephen Hillenburg, who previously worked marine biologist

Stephen Hillenburg studied in a specialty related to the organization of rational use of marine natural resources. After graduating from the institute, he taught ocean biology for several years at one of the highest educational institutions State of California. Among other things, Hillenburg was also fond of drawing. He even created his own comic book called "Tidal Zone", the main character of which was a prototype of SpongeBob.

In 1997, Hillenburg began working on the animated series "SpongeBob SquarePants", which subsequently became very interesting to representatives of the children's television channel "Nickelodeon".

2. In the original, the character of the animated series created by Stephen Hillenburg was going to be called Sponge Boy

Initially, Stephen Hillenburg wanted to call the main character of his animated series Sponge Boy, or SpongeBoy. However, this name was already used by a company that produced mops, as well as various cleaning and detergent products. Be that as it may, Hillenburg decided to keep the word "sponge" in the name of the main character of his cartoon (which, by the way, was originally called "SpongeBoy Ahoy!") because he was afraid that children might mistake it for a piece of cheese.

3. SpongeBob owes his character to Jerry Lewis, Paul Reubens and Stan Laurel

According to director Derek Drymon, Hillenburg wanted main character his animated series was funny, mischievous and joyful, like famous American comedians Jerry Lewis, Paul Reubens and Stan Laurel.

Tom Kenny, the man who voiced SpongeBob SquarePants, said that Hillenburg described his character as "half child, half adult" and compared him to Munchkin (from The Wizard of Oz) and the aforementioned comedians.

4. Patrick the Starfish was originally intended to be an angry, disgruntled bar owner.

Character in the form starfish Pink colour first appeared in the animated series when Hillenburg and Drymon were storyboarding the pilot for SpongeBob SquarePants. This was not the sweet and dim-witted Patrick Star, but the angry and rude owner of a roadside bar, among other things, a “bully and a bully” who was constantly irritated about the color of his body. When Bill Fagerbakke voiced Patrick, he deliberately slowed down his speech and imagined that he had no neck and his mouth was at chest level.

5. Is Squidward a squid or an octopus?

No one knows exactly who Squidward Tentacles really is. In some episodes of "SpongeBob SquarePants", it is said that he is a squid, in others - an octopus. Stephen Hillenburg created the image of a pessimistic cephalopod with six tentacles only to "not overload its visual perception."

6. The fish from the animated series "SpongeBob SquarePants" that constantly screams "My leg!" has a name. Her name is Fred.

The name of the fish that constantly screams "My leg!" in the animated series was revealed in the episode "Patty Hype". It turns out her name is Fred.

7. Parody of the animated series "SpongeBob SquarePants"

In 2003, the animation studio "Camp Chaos", especially for the show "Very American TV" (English "ILL-ustrated"), which was broadcast on VH1 and MTV2, created a parody of the creation of Stephen Hillenburg - an animated series called "Sponge Bong Hemp Trousers". Its main character lived in a fly agaric, was friends with Gashik and loved to smoke marijuana.

For obvious reasons, this cartoon never appeared on TV screens. But it can be found on YouTube, where it has collected more than 6.3 million views.

8. Stars such as Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Robin Williams took part in voicing the characters in the animated series “SpongeBob SquarePants” (contrary to the initial wishes of Stephen Hillenburg)

Initially, Stephen Hillenburg was against celebrities voicing characters in his animated series. Apparently, he was afraid that SpongeBob SquarePants would be compared to The Simpsons. Hillenburg made an exception only for Tim Conway and Ernest Borgnine, who in the first three seasons voiced the favorite characters SpongeBob, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy.

After Hillenburg stepped down as executive producer of the animated series, the residents of Bikini Bottom began speaking in the voices of Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Robin Williams, Amy Poehler, Johnny Depp, Victoria Beckham, LeBron James, Pink, Patton Oswalt and others famous personalities.

9. Stephen Hillenburg didn't want Justin Timberlake to sing the SpongeBob SquarePants song.

The soundtrack to the animated series "SpongeBob SquarePants" has been released with many cover versions, in particular, one of them was sung by Canadian singer Avril Lavigne.

The lyrics to the song "Just a Kid", which is performed in the cartoon by the American rock band "Wilco", were written by its vocalist Jeff Tuidy.

The soundtrack to the cartoon "SpongeBob and Patrick Confront the Psychic Wall of Energy", performed by The Flaming Lips, its frontman Wayne Coyne initially planned to sing in a duet with Justin Timberlake, but Stephen Hillenburg opposed this idea. He allegedly told Coyne that he didn't want to get involved with any kind of "commercial" weirdos. "I don't like people for whom the main objective- Receiving a profit. I like you guys, Wilco and Ween," Hillenburg said.

10. Mushrooms Named After SpongeBob SquarePants

In 2010, Dennis Desjardins, a researcher at San Francisco State University, discovered tropical forests Malaysia the new kind mushrooms, which he decided to name Spongiforma squarepantsii in honor of SpongeBob SquarePants.

Spongiforma squarepantsii mushrooms were found on the island of Borneo (aka Kalimantan) in a place that resembled the seabed, “covered with tubular sponges,” some of which smelled like fruit, others like mold.

11. The writers of the cartoon "SpongeBob SquarePants" were inspired by the works of Ray Bradbury

Screenwriter Merriweather Williams, in search of inspiration for writing episodes of the second season of “SpongeBob SquarePants,” decided to turn to the works of American writer Ray Bradbury. She gave her team several copies of his essay collection, Zen in the Art of Writing. Moreover, to generate ideas for the plot of the cartoon, Williams resorted to a method called the “Noun Game.” She asked everyone to write three to six nouns on separate pieces of paper, after which she threw them into a hat and mixed them thoroughly. With the noun that Williams pulled out the next moment, everyone had to formulate in one minute short story.

12. Conservative public organizations called the animated series "SpongeBob SquarePants" propaganda of homosexuality

In 2005, conservative groups such as Focus on the Family declared that SpongeBob SquarePants was a tool for promoting homosexuality. After this incident, the producers of the animated series began to say that the main character has no gender at all. In 2002, Stephen Hillenburg said during an interview with the Wall Street Journal that he considered all of his characters to be “asexual.”

The four-meter replica of David Hasselholff, weighing 340 kilograms, cost about $100 thousand from the total budget of “SpongeBob SquarePants.” The actor himself appeared only at the end of the animated series, in an episode that was written even before the Baywatch star agreed to star in it. A giant David Hasselholff mannequin was sold at auction earlier this year.

14. SpongeBob SquarePants is the longest running animated series ever shown on Nickelodeon.

The number of episodes of “SpongeBob SquarePants” filmed in the current (ninth) season will reach 200. New episodes of the animated series have not been released on TV screens since March, because this moment its producers are working to complete filming of the feature-length film "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water", which is set for release in February 2015.

This is not a far-fetched fan theory, but real fact from one of the creators. This was revealed in the commentary track for the special DVD release. True, they didn’t say which sin specifically applies to whom, but it’s not difficult to figure it out.

Patrick is lazy
He lies under a rock for days, his to-do list consists of "Nothing", and in one episode he even received an award for doing nothing the longest. It is common to call it sin, but we still believe that it is art.

Squidward - anger
This guy could play main role in the movie "Hate and Hate in Bikini Bottom". Squidward is infuriated by his life, his job, his environment and everything in general.

Mr. Krabs - greed
A creature with the motto "Money, money, money, money, MONEY!" does not raise any questions as to what sin to attribute it to.

Plankton - envy
He envies Mr. Krabs because he has success, clients, power and girls, while Plankton has cobwebs, decay and a robot wife who does nothing but saw.

Gary - Gluttony
Fact: This creature's purpose in life is to fill its belly. Very often, when Gary appears in the picture, SpongeBob says that the snail should be given something to eat. Oh, yes, Kamon, in one episode the pet even ran away from home because the owner forgot to feed him!

Sandy - pride
A squirrel who is madly proud of her heritage, origin, level of development and position in society. Moreover, when her sense of self-importance is hurt, her facial expression becomes such that she immediately wants to apologize for something.

Spongebob - Lust
This point sounds the most dubious of all, but everything changes if you look in the dictionary. One of the definitions of the word lust is excessive love for others. SpongeBob is one of those people for whom it is important to be good in the eyes of others: he will never refuse a friend, acquaintance, or passer-by any request, even the stupidest one. SpongeBob loves everyone and everyone, and there is no point in arguing with that.

2. Patrick has an older sister, Sam.

Although I would rather call it big sister. Sam speaks mostly in menacing sounds.

3. SpongeBob will turn 30 this year.

Judging by his driver's license, Sponge's birthday is July 14, 1986.

4. Patrick weighs only 56 grams

Or 2 oz. That's what it says on his driver's license.

5. SpongeBob worked at the Krusty Krab for 31 years.

At least, this figure was in 2004, when the full-length film “SpongeBob SquarePants” was released. It said he had received 374 Employee of the Month awards. 374 bonuses divided by 12 months = 31 years of service. Due to previous paragraph I want to shout: logic, find yourself!

6. Squidward is not a squid, as is commonly believed

He's an octopus. And he has 6 limbs, not 8, as expected, because “it looked too brutal.”

7. The creator of the series is a marine biologist

The idea for the show itself came to Stephen Hillenburg during another expedition to the seabed.

8. In the series there is a character who appears in moments of chaos and shouts: “My leg!” (My leg!)

His name is Fred, and we think he's the most developed character on the show.

9. A species of sea mushroom discovered in 2011 was named after SpongeBob.

Spongiforma squarepantsii. Looks like a cut orange.

10. SpongeBob was originally going to be called Sponge Boy.

But it turned out that this name was already taken by a brand of mops.
